I love Steam. If I want to buy the game, I can get it over Steam for about 30% off the retail price here, due to greedy importers and favourable exchange rates. I can get silver for less than standard bronze retail.

But if the rumours of product-activation-esqe requirements for even hardcopies are true, then that's stupid.

It's your own damn fault for buying into the belief that the street date is more important than the gold date.

What were you waiting for? Christmas?

Stand Back!
'said Stand Back!

What are those dogs doing sniffing at my feet?
They're on to something, picking up
Picking up this heat, this heat

{Chorus 1:}
Give me steam
And how you feel can make it real
Real as anything you've seen
Get a life with the dreamer's dream

You know your culture from your trash
You know your plastic from your cash
When I lose sight of the track
You know the way back
But I know you

You know your stripper from your paint
You know your sinner from your saint
Whenever heaven's doors are shut
You kick them open, but
I know you

{Chorus 2:}
Give me steam
And how you feel can make it real
Real as any place you've been
Get a life with the dreamer's dream

Stand back!
'said Stand back!
Can't you see I've lost control? I'm getting indiscreet
You're moving in so close 'til I'm picking up
Picking up this heat, this heat

[Chorus 1]

You know your green from your red
You know the quick from the dead
So much better than the rest
You think you've been blessed
But I know you

You know your ladder from your snake
You know the throttle from the brake
You know your straight line from a curve
You've got a lot of nerve
But I know you

[Chorus 2]

Everybody nosedive
Hold your breath, count to five
Backslap, boobytrap
Cover it up in bubblewrap
Room shake, earthquake
Find a way to stay awake
It's gonna blow, it's gonna break
This is more than I can take

Oh yeah, I need steam
Feel the steam around me
Ah you're turning up the heat
When I start to dream aloud
'Til you're movin' hands and feet
Won't you step into this cloud of steam
This steam

[Chorus 1]

Help me yeah
Ready to steam out the log jam
Stir crazy from the freezer to the boil
Water's bubbling, it's b..b..b..bubbling
bubbling bubbling bubbling bubbling
Life is coming to the boil
Gimme steam, lady
Gimme the steam around me now
On a high, Coming alive
'said gimme some steam!

the Crossfire Effect™ isn't the exclusive domain of cable news channels.

The greatest thing about Half-Life 2 is that we only have to wait a few more months to play it. Hat's off to Valve for that...we all knew it was coming, we just didn't know how soon.

Can someone who has steam give a short honest decription of what it is?  What's with this 'complete access to the back catalog' thing?  What does that mean?  What about the 3rd party games?  Are there any yet?  How does it work?  Is it annoying in some special way?

And what about burning the files to a DVD as a hardcopy backup?  It sounds good in theory, but what are the chances of that actually working when the game comes out if say you were to format your hard drive and try to reinstall the game from your backup?

Lost remains super awesome.

Agree.  I honestly wasn't really big on this week's episode, since Jack's past is somewhat predictable and...kind of boring, I guess.  Locke is still awesome though.  I read some spoilers in the TV guide, but it's probably not anything you didn't already figure out.

I liked that Jack's past wasn't chock full of some giant wacky secret, that things on the island can be of emotional importance without getting into sci-fi necessarily..  The swimming woman was unbelievably stupid, in a way I found very believable.  And yeah, Locke remains awesome.

As I understand it, access to their back catalog includes something along the lines of the Half Life Platinum pack (HL, TFC, DOD, DMC, Ricochet) or what have you. I'd assume this means it will be compatible with third party mods like NS, as it is now, but I imagine that'd be less of an issue as their respective developments will probably cede to HL2 when/if the user base shifts dramatically.

Burning the GCF cache files as a hard copy is a perfectly reasonable solution. It works because the nature of the system. Even if you had an incomplete or outdated backup on DVD, you'd still only have to download minor updates to those cache files rather than the whole deal all over again. When I install Steam on another machine I dump my directory in the SteamApps folder (along with the GCF files) and rename the folder to their account name. Works perfectly.

I'm looking forward to the episode about the Korean couple.  TV guide had a mild spoiler about it that I (and probably everyone else) has already guessed at.  Honestly I don't think they're even halfway to introducing everyone properly.  I'm glad they're not rushing the character development, because I think that's a really strong point of the show.

Thanks man, much appreciated.  I may yet resurrect it when the game is actually released since this one will be pretty full by then.

Can someone who has steam give a short honest description of what it is?

It's a) an automatic patching/download system, b) a friends list with messaging stuff, c) server browser, d) a game purchasing system, e) "CD key" validator and f) a game launcher.

What's with this 'complete access to the back catalog' thing?  What does that mean?

You can download their old games if your package allows for it, HL1, Opposing Force and a bunch of other mods.

What about the 3rd party games?  Are there any yet?

Well there's third party mods and there's that 2D platform-type thing, not no real games yet.  That vampire game might end up on it though.

How does it work?

You click on the icon, it loads, it updates itself, it loads some more, you use it.

Is it annoying in some special way?

Depends on who you ask.

And what about burning the files to a DVD as a hardcopy backup?

There's a directory where the main game components are stored in glorified zip files separate from the user settings and stuff, so you can back them up easily enough.

It sounds good in theory, but what are the chances of that actually working when the game comes out if say you were to format your hard drive and try to reinstall the game from your backup?

It works fine.

I agree about the character development.  I like that we are getting to know each character as the show goes on, instead of the quick "This is the leader guy, this is the tough chick, this is the bad guy you might like, etc, etc."

And the suspense of the island is a good thing.
