What the fuck is your background?
September 15th 2004, 23:24 CEST by mnemonic

So are we all the eloquent wannabe intellectuals that we portray online, or something more (or less!)?  We may never find out.  Nevertheless, we can still provide some basic info to satisfy each others' curiosities.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Age:
Location:
Occupation:
Mini-bio:

All fields are required.  If any are omitted, you will die tomorrow.  I'll post my entry along with the rest, if this topic gets to the front page.

Yot,

You don't spend any time gaming?

#12 by UncleJeet

Currently, my gaming time is being spent alternating between Sims 2 and Fable with my wife.  Whilst I'm on the xbox with Fable, she's raising our SimFamily on the PC, then we'll switch off and I'll start corrupting our child whilst she runs around kicking chickens on the xbox.

*Sims 2 is a lot like Sims 1 at first, but don't be put off by that.  With just a little playtime, you start to uncover all of the neat new little things they've added that make it fun.

*Fable is a lot more structured than I thought it would be, but it's still a great amount of fun, and it keeps getting better.

Charles, what level of 'bad' movies do you like to watch? Are we talking B-movie, no-budget Sci-Fi? Skinemax trash? Big budget disasters?

I consider myself a bad movie buff and appreciate when flicks are so terrible they perform a 180 and end up entertaining you. I'm one of probably 769 people who went to see 'Half Past Dead' in the theaters for just this reason.

Skinemax = funnay way of saying the name of pay channel Cinemax. It's the home of mid-nineties Rutger Hauer flicks during the day and Shannon Tweed films at night.

Right now I get about a hundred visitors to the site a day and 30 downloads.  When it first came out and was "new" on all the shareware sites it was more like a thousand visitors and 200+ downloads.

About 0.2 percent (zero point two percent, not 2 percent) of the people who download it buy it.

I'd call it a "trickle" of sales.  Not exactly a huge success, but the game was more or less just a test I used to implement my engine and isn't all that extensive so I didn't expect it to do super-well sales wise.

From what I've seen of the indie game market, though, it is very hit or miss.  If your game resonates with people and creates really good word of mouth you can make a small fortune on a title, but the majority of games don't make much money at all.

I've also heard that in the indie game space, the Mac market is good to get into because there are less game developers (both indie and commercial) supporting the platform, so titles don't get lost in all the noise of other releases as they do on the PC.  I plan to test this out in the near future with Mac releases of Zany Blocks and "second game".

#40 by Penguinx
2004-09-16 01:28:39
"Second game?" That sounds exotic! The platypus goes on a Zelda-like, old-school, planometric, action-RPG-esque adventure, doesn't he?

Your Mischief Entertainment site looks clean and professional, you've gotten a decent rating from Tucows (which, while not legendary, doesn't hurt), and the game is fun to play. Kudos. Best of luck with all that.

a decent rating from Tucows

Decent rating?!  We got 5 cows baby!  The HIGHEST rating!  It also got 4 (out of 5) on CNET Download.com, which isn't too shabby either.

However... I'm actually surprised it got 5 cows considering the programmer art and simplicity of the game.
There's lots of games in the indie market that I see with 3 or 4 cow ratings that (based on ancedotal evidence) are selling tons more copies than Zany Blocks.

Shows what those tucows guys know!
