iTunes Has Made Me A Better Person
August 29th 2004, 19:55 CEST by Max

OMG WAR3Z THREAD

A year ago, perhaps 50% of my iPod's stored music was legally obtained.  Today, it's more like 90%.  Has today's relative ubiquity of legal channels for downloading music changed your music purchasing/downloading habits?

The 50% of legally obtained music was ripped from CDs I own, mainly, and that 50% is still extant.  However, over the last year I've replaced much of the illegally-obtained music with legal copies, as well as increasing the legal percentage by purchasing newer music.  Am I in the majority, do you think?  Were all the people who said "I'd buy it if it were available electronically," actually telling the truth, or are they still downloading illegally?

On a related subject, will the RIAA and MPAA and all the other AA's ever succeed in legislating enough DRM to effectively stem the flow of illegal downloads?

I do hope the legal download systems have started to stem the flow of illegal MP3s, it saddens me to see thousands of artists being deprived of their royalties just because some punk thinks copyright infringement isn't a crime or doesn't hurt anyone.

Ever since I started using Rhapsody (similar to iTunes) last year, I think I've downloaded maybe two songs off a P2P network because I couldn't find them. So it's working on me.

Bandwidth limits eh.. hmm.. In that case: I'll make a script that'll force-refresh the page hundreds of times a minute unless I get 40% of the google-ad money!

Also.
I'm all for the concept of iTunes. Brilliant idea. I think I'd be a better person if I were using it. I uh.. don't think it's available in little ol' Denmark though.

But anyway, I'm not so hot on the actual iTunes. I have to install yet another program capable of playing music? C'mon.. just gimme a website to buy and download mp3s (or similar open format).

With the iTunes format, do you still have to burn the songs to a CD and then rip them back to get completly away from their mess?

It just rubs me the wrong way. I'd like to find a hassle-free legit music-source though.. but I'm still waiting. I think I'd still download albums illigally to check the quality, but I'm sure my ratio would go up considerably.

I really don't see the difference between an artist getting shafted out of royalties by people "stealing" their songs, or an artist getting shafted out of their royalties by the record company.

I just got back from the RNC protests. This group marched from 14th and 7th Ave to Madison Square Garden and then back down to Union Square. It was pretty interesting. Very peaceful and fun. Lesbians make the best protesters. Best outfit/sign I saw was a girl wearing crotchless shorts and marker on her belly saying "NO BUSH" and then an arrow pointing downwards. There were also a LOT of older people there, some with kids in strollers. It really wasn't what I was expecting at all. Tonight I am going to a Makeout Not War rally organized by the Bowery Poetry Club.

What can I say, I have no problem paying for what I want, especially since they give me what I want, when I want it. While I have zero problem with p2p downloading and really see it as being no different than duping  tapes or whatever, I tip good waitressess, I tip a good haircut, and I through a bone to something that entertains me. I use itunes to play my usic, but haven't bought much.  My musical taste hasn't changed much in the past 5 years, so I already have most of the stuff I listen too.  I am addicted to audible.com, I get daily downloads of the most recent NPR shows, and buy an occasional book (right now I'm listening to Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot).

Re: Hero

Well, it's a piece of epic poetry isn't it?  A rumination on the nature of loyalty and society and hopes for the future and individualism vs the state and love of country and all that.
It's not a movie about some guys and some other guys doing some stuff, the scope and intensity of these people's feelings and lives aren't human in any individual realistic way.

Every frame of it is beautiful and saturated, as you say, with drama.  The main..I hesitate to say "problem", but the main issue a viewer might have with it is with the movie's take on..well, the first Emperor of China in specific and the morality of states in general.

Anyway, I think to call it forced is to miss the point, you might as well call the lovers in Romero and Juliet overwrought and immature.

yes, to DRM, and sorta, to the burn limitation. You can burn the same playlist up to 3 times, but you can keep burning the songs as many as you like, you just need to changeup the playlist. this is so people dont' buy an album and burn it multiple times. You can play your purchased music on up to 7 PC's, any ipod, or naturally you can burn them to cd and re rip them as mp3.

Wow, I'm sorry I missed this getting posted; all the relevant comments have already been made.  So... I thought Doom3 was kinda dark.

Actually, I guess we could precipitately say that, among the not-stupids, the availability of legal music downloads has proved what we were all saying a year or two ago.  The next question is if this will influence the RIAA into discontinuing their Nazi ways.  Didn't I read somewhere that some huge percentage of each iTune downloaded goes to the RIAA, like 95% or something, and that it's therefore not really profitable for Apple yet, and that furthermore the RIAA wanted to raise the price?

It is a little more troubling considering that "take" includes post-Tiennemen China.  I found the ending extremely unsettling.

As for the rest of the movie, it was a mixed bag, though often great.  Three of the fight scenes (the Donnie Yen-Jet Li Mexican stand off, Maggie Cheung in the forest and the fight on the lake) were awesome and the rest were..meh.  The colors were gorgeous as one would expect from masters like Zhimou and Doyle, but much of the movie seemed like one-upsmanship and the Rashomon device go a little tiresome.

Still, alotta fun.  Just not up there with Zhang Zhimou's best.

The only reason why I've got it installed is to copy music to my iPod.

iTunes is -- okay.

It would be a lot better if Apple would follow standard Windows UI guidelines.

Not because I think the UI standards for Windows are better than those for the Mac, but just because I like my applications to be nice and consistent within whichever OS I am currently using.
