HORIZONS FUCKS ARTIFACT ENTERTAINMENT UP THE ASS!
July 20th 2004, 10:53 CEST by Morn

Oh nos! Artifact Entertainment file chapter 11 bankruptcy.

July 19, 2004, Mesa, Ariz. - Artifact Entertainment, developers of the award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Horizons: Empire of Ista r ia, announced today that to restructure its debt and strengthen its competitive position, the Company has filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. This action was primarily due to an inability to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement with a key vendor.
The company is also in active discussions with other gaming industry players, with due diligence underway by a seriously interested company that may make an offer to acquire the assets of the company, and retain key staff to maintain operations of its Horizons game. Horizons has a worldwide following and is played by tens-of-thousands of fans in nearly 40 countries spanning territories in Asia, Europe and North America. Players are able to download Horizons for a free seven-day trial and subsequently subscribe to the game for a one-, three-, six or 12-month commitment period.

Artifact Entertainment President and Creative Director, David Bowman, said, "Artifact Entertainment is a wonderfully creative company. We have an excellent game subscriber base through our Horizons property. We have been taking prudent steps to improve cash flow during the past seven months. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to reach a satisfactory agreement with a key vendor. We strongly reiterate that Horizons fans and their game play will not be affected by the Chapter 11 filing."

Read: "We tried to sell the players' email addresses to a spammer but didn't find a buyer yet."

I think the game would've been a bigger hit if it had more goats in it.

I'm more super than you.

So that means Terata (or who was it) is out of a job? I hope he doesn't follow DKI's example of 'things to do in Canada when you're unemployed'.

Goats always make things better. I'm disturbed by the lack of goat screenshots in the upcoming Doom 3, another chance to snag the mammal-lovin' crowd is yet again wasted.
BTW anyone got any suggestions on the best MMORPG to try? I'm leaning towards Anarchy online but is it pants?

Kreed is a horrible sin against humanity and conclusive proof that My Friend was, after all, right about PC gaming being on its deathbed.

It has nothing - and I mean NOTHING - to do with the alpha version from a few years back. Alpha demonstrated only a few crumbs of content, but had beautiful weapon design, impressive design (just a few rooms aboard a spaceship, but still) and graphics which then seemed set to give the big DX9 players a run for their money. Actual Kreed is more like a festering pit into which bowels of dogs who died of diarrhea plague have been dumped for centuries. It wins the "hughest discrepancy between PR material and actual product" award hands down.

The content is not ridiculously unbalanced in quality simply because it is all bad. The lighting is broken, models and textures are awful, weapons are generic shit, gameplay is so bad it went full circle and made the game intruiging all over again - I play it to laugh at it.
Apart from all that, it seems to be chock full of stolen textures and assets in general - the blood spatter texture is stolen from Doom 3 alpha, some shockwaves are nicked from Jedi Academy, some other effects from Quake 3, etc. - but stating that is just invoking the SEEN IT! fairy, I'm sure.

Please, for the love of baby Jesus, don't buy this game. If you want to witness such true horror of badness, warez it. If you buy this crap, the terrorists have won.

You shouldn't use a game made by wacky europeans with no money as some kind of indicator of the death of PC gaming.  There have always been, and always will be, bad games.

Yes, and Caryn set up a test server for use by loyal Crappers. It rocks, the graphics are totally mind-blowing and the network code is smooth as a baby's butt!

I'm not too sure whether they qualify as European or not; if I'm not mistaken they deserve the designation Eurasian. I remember the term "Eurasia" from my geography lessons in school.

Also, I'd imagine a co-op mod for Doom3 would be out shortly after its released

I think Artifact's biggest problem was that their game was no fun.  Horizons fucked it's players up the ass first, so I'm not surprised by this bankruptcy/anal raping.

From what I've read, Doom3 has multiplayer so why wouldn't it have co-op?  Why the hell not?  If it doesn't I will hold Caryn personally responsible.

Different company doing the Xbox porting I believe? And I guess instead of just porting code all day long they decided to add a bit of candy.

But I think we can assume a slightly enthusiastic community will spring up around D3, maybe there'll be someone willing to make the coop happen?

Doom 3 DOES have co-op.  Sure, all the press releases and suchlike say it doesn't because they wanted to focus on the single-player experience, but that's just misinformation so that when you finally get your copy of the game and have finished ooohing and aaahing over the sinister cover art you'll be pleasantly surprised to find fully operational co-operative play courtesy of Caryn.
