BETHESDA FUCKS THE FALLOUT FRANCHISE UP THE ASS!
July 15th 2004, 03:56 CEST by BobJustBob

The Fallout 3 thread on Qt3 is so much fun, we need one here too. Go nuts! Let the wailing begin!

Personally, I've always wanted a turn-based first-person game. I don't expect it here, but it would be a nice balance of innovation and tradition.

My first ever time seeing my one vote count. Awwww.
Um... What boggles me most is thet Bethesda are claiming that they won't be using any of the existing material from Van Buren. Why not? The engine was supposed to be 95% complete. Surely it's not that hard to get the coders up to speed?

If the engine was 95% complete, you would have seen screenshots and movies by now.  Anyway, there is no point for bethesda to keep it, when they are more familiar with their own tech and can leverage more talent that way.

We did see screenshots - just after IP canned the project. Nothing was released prior as the project was not yet officially announced.

Point taken about the familiarity with the code/tech - I know I have enough trouble remembering what I wrote in a simple 5000-line assignment after a few months. Of course I can never be bothered to comment properly either...

Turn based first person.. I don't even care much for turn based third person. That idea doesn't get my vote anyhow.

Idunno about this Fallout thing.. the first couple of games were kinda fun? Neat universe, horrible turnbased interface, kinda meh gameplay. Or I've missed what is universally accepted as the coolest piece of entertainment evar?

That's just my honest opinion.  I played through the first one, it was okay, but I don't really see how people can get such a big boner over it.

I've never played any game in the franchise. The last 'strategy' game I played was Shining Force II on the Genesis... Wait, I do like Advance Wars.

Turn based FP? I am not a strategy gamer but it sounds like it could be smuggling a turd via a jewel case.

Heh. I just watched a movie called The Fourth Protocol. Crappy movie, but one of the actors was named Ray McAnally. Poor guy.

On topic (although anal sex is technically on topic), I also never understood the idolation of Fallout. I liked the first game and I've enjoyed the few hours I've played of the second, but they're hardly worthy of such fanatical devotion. They're no Morrowind. Seriously though, Fallout was basically a completely standard post-apocalyptic setting, a decent turn-based battle system, and an impressive introductory cutscene. That being said, I'm actually anticipating this game. I'm expecting a first-person action-RPG with real-time combat, and thus am also expecting an increase in teenage geek suicides as more details are released.

Plus, you know, Elder Scrolls 4. Woohoo.

Dood.

Those fucks on QT3 are way to uptight.  I like the idea Bethesda making Fallout 3.  I have 1 & 2, but never got to far into them.  I like the setting, and everything, but for some reason I didn't stay with it.  We'll see what Bethesda can do with it.

Well, I think the reason I'm so fond of the game is that it was my first RPG, and I really appreciate the way they used the setting. Also, nice balance between storyline and freedom in there. I know a few people who used to just load up games to go on killing rampages every now and then and watch people melt into puddles of goo. It was also pretty good at having multiple ways to complete quests, etc. and had a somewhat less token set of evil quests than usual. IIRC *spoiler*

you could kill the final boss (though there were 2 major 'bosses') in 4 main ways. Run up and blast him(fighter), set off the nuclear weapon he was building under his base, either (a) by stealing the key(stealth/thief) or (b) messing with the controls (repair/techy) and finally with enough speech/science you could talk him into killing himself.

Objectively the combat system was fairly bad in many ways, there were a lot of holdovers from GURPS, and some of the skills, etc. weren't designed very well due to SPECIAL being invented at the last minute, but it tended to be fun.

Bethesda isn't using any of the previously created assets, so its 0% done at the moment. Right now they are in the pre-production planning stage. I doubt they even know if it will be turn based, isometric or whatever else people may be concerned about.

If it's anything like their past few games, (Morrowind, Redguard, Battlespire....), I'd guess that the majority of the game design will be focused on sapping the fun out of the game and squandering any potential it might have had.

To do this properly, Bethesda must seek the guidance of Electronic Arts.

While superficially, a giant empty wasteland seems like the perfect environment for Fallout, I bet walking around in it is just as unfun as it was in Morrowind.

It might not be too bad as long as they include the car, although given that in the Morrowind engine you hit a load spot every 10 seconds or so on foot, in a car it'll actually just be all-loading, all the time.  Well apart from during the Cliffracer Radscorpion attacks that'll happen every 30 seconds.

I liked fallout and played it to the end.  Fallout 2 maybe played half of it...tactics, just played a little.  It just got stale.

If -I- were in charge, I would make it a cross between fallout, morrowind, and KOTR.

It would be morrowind-like in that it would have a fully detailed landscape to explore (only without having to load every 10 seconds)...not small zones positioned on a big fake map.

It would be KOTR-like in that it would snap to turn based third or first person during battle.

And the fallout part would be the setting of course...the best thing about fallout.

Of course you would be able to drive all sorts of vehicles all over the world, including tanks and flying vehicles.  Give it a real mad max feel.

...also I want to say this is the lamest topic opener I've ever seen posted.  I voted no just because it was so vague.
