And now a word from the President!
July 11th 2004, 17:32 CEST by Morn

Some changes on the Crap today! First and most importantly of all, I've re-added the PayPal buttons to the site, so you can once again show me how much you love me (or the site, or both) by either making a one time donation or signing up for a $3/month donation subscription.

Now, because I love you all at least as much, there will soon be a new version of this site. I've been collecting feedback and ideas from the feature request thread and #planetcrap; overall, most of the site will stay the same, but with all sorts of improvements all over the place (search, highlight/ignore users, syndication feeds, URL-autolinking, switchable designs, and much, much more). More details are available on my development weblog.

I've also made some minor changes to the current version of the site. You will notice that there are now Google AdSense banners. These are to be considered experimental at this point; I'd like to find out how well they work on PC. So far the results have been pretty good, except the other change I made kinda broke them: topics now have a new, much cleaner and nicer to look at URL scheme (the old URLs still work, though). Since Google hasn't indexed the new URLs yet, the ads placed on those pages don't make a lot of sense right now. This will probably improve over the next week or two.

I've set up a mailing list at Google Groups 2 for further development/feature/etc discussion. Feel free to subscribe if you want to follow and/or discuss where things are headed. Rock on, and huge thanks to everyone who's donated or is planning on doing so! 3y3 wub j00!

Update: PlanetCrap now has an ATOM feed containing new topics posted to the front page. PlanetCrap 7.0 will have a more complete collection of feeds. See my devblog for details.

I had $18 in my Paypal account, so thats how much I paid.  I'd rather do lump sums every few months if thats going to prevent Paypal from taking too much.

First of all, props on finally putting up a bar icon.  Plus, do we have to subscribe a month at a time.  I would much prefer an annual membership.

Also, how about planetcrap e-mail for subscriber?  :)

What does this mean?

It means planetcrap now has a .htaccess file filled with the cryptic voodoo that is mod_rewrite.  Or to put it another way, the site url uses fake directory names (eg. /topics/123/) for collecting variables instead of the old way (blah.php?action=viewthread&threadid=123).

I'm using Firefox and I still see the ads, but who cares.  Google ads are the least annoying ads out there, the only way these could improve is to match the color scheme of the page.

Ads only bother me when they have sound or flash at me. Otherwise I support them. Ad blocking is kind of mean, unless they are evil pop ups or sound blasting annoyances.

I agree with LPMiller.  I hate popups and those annoying DHTML 'floater' ads as much or more than anyone, but I don't understand why some people think that ALL ADS EVERYWHERE MUST BE BLOCKED.  The google ads on this site now are completely non-intrusive.  Not a problem at all.

The type of ads (non-popup, no noise, no roll over, non-floater type) here don't bother me, but I do find they break the flow of the site a little by having them after the first topic on the front page and after the topic block on any other page. Maybe putting them below the navigation bar, or the paypal section would give a cleaner look to the site.

I kid cause I care.

We should start the Election Day Pool.

Choices:
A)  Election goes off without a hitch, Bush ousted
B)  Election 'postponed' due to terrorist activity
C)  Election outright cancelled, 'for the good of the nation'.
D)  Election goes off, Kerry wins, Bush stays.
E)  Election goes off, Kerry wins, Haliburton takes the presidency.

Feel free to add your options.
