Woohoo!
I should really read more newspapers. I selected Gronkjaer in my Euro2004 fantasy league team, but it turns out he stayed behind in Denmark due to family circumstances. Dammit.

Grnkjr's mom passed away 2 days ago. I doubt he'll make it to Portugal at all which is bad news for Denmark since he's one of our most important players. Gravesen, another very important player for Denmark is also out in the match against Italy. Last time we played Italy we beat them 3-2 in Napoli (don't know what's it's called in English), but it's gonna be an uphill struggle to repeat that result.

What does it say about a coach when he can't get four all-stars(three and a half with Malones knee I suppose) to win a championship?  Over-rated possibly?

The man on 9 championships, how can you call him overrated?  Is he supposed to win everytime?  I don't know basketball, but is this the first time he lost (assuming they do, which I know it isn't over yet)?

Yeah, I think Phil Jackson will still go down as one of the great coaches of all time.  Even he can't win them all.

Sure, he'll go into the Hall, but I still contend that it's easier to do when you have the best players in the league on your team. If he takes the Clippers to the Finals, there's no contest.

So Bob Huggins, head coach of the University of Cincinnati Basketball team, was arrested for DUI over the weekend.  He definitely appeared impaired on the cruiser cam video and the audio recorded an officer mentioning that they drove him home the last time this happened.

The school's response?  Indefinite suspension with pay and undisclosed criteria for his return to the team.  Wow that's harsh.

I'd contend very few, if any coaches in the league could have gotten the likes of Jordan and Pippen and Kobe and Shaq to ever play like a team long enough to win championships, let alone multiple championships.  Now, Larry Brown is a different story.  He's a real ground floor rehabber of basket case teams (and he's hall of fame too).  So I'm happy to see him right on the verge of his first championship.

Who are the coaches that win championships without good players?
#30 by yotsuya
2004-06-14 18:57:25
Well, of course you need good players. What I'm saying is that I think Jackson' accomplishments as a coach are a bit overrated in the light of the fact that he had the best players in the league on his teams. Can he mold talent? I'm not so sure. Look at what guys like Larry Brown has done? I'm sure he'd have 9 rings, too. When Jackson takes over a team with no talent and eventually guides them to the Finals, then I'll consider him a great coach, not simply a master motivator who has been at the right place at the right time.

Yeah, but both times, when Jackson came in, the pieces were already there. No one thought, "Wow, he's exceeded out expectations with this bunch."

Is he a good coach? Probably. But not as good, in my opinion, as Brown, Popavich, et al. If he takes another team to the Finals, one without talent at first, but one he molds and shapes into champions, then I'd be the first one to consider him to be a GREAT coach.

Larry took over the Sixers team with the league MVP on it and then jumped ship to the two time division winning Pistons. Doesn't seem that different from what Phil's done. It's not Phil's fault that his first job worked out so well that he doesn't have to take the Clippers job. Larry isn't taking those jobs anymore, either.

I think you're underrating Phil Jackson's accomplishments. Those best players in the league didn't win championships without Phil. You don't stumble into nine championships and you can't say it's because of the best players, or we'd be talking about Del Harris as one of the best coaches ever right now.

For the record, Pop didn't step in as coach of the Spurs until he had not only David Robinson, but also Tim Duncan, and a solid cast of roleplayers... and the knowledge that he had two more first-round draft picks (who would end up being Ginobili and Parker) on the way over the next few years.

Not exactly taking a team of unknowns and forging them into something elite.

I think you have to rate NBA coaches on their team's willingness to pay defense.  You've got so many prima donnas and "pure scorers" on every team, it takes a special coach to get them to do more than put a hand up on defense.

Alrighty, this would be the right place for manly discussions.  We close on the house on Thursday and I'm faced with the most important decision of my life.  Paint colors?  No.  Pillow shams?  Not quite.  I need to know about grills, baby.

Charcoal or gas?  Weber or Char-broil?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Kids today have so many advantages I never had.  There's no telling what I could've accomplished with a home computer and a handgun.

I have a plain ol Weber charcoal grill.  Use a chimney starter and do basic maintainence on it and you should have no issues.  See Alton Brown for good charcoal and grill maintainence advice.

I have always seen Alton Brown for cooking advice.  I will be using a good chunk charcoal instead of briquettes if I choose that route.

I'm thinking a basic Weber at this point, maybe with a few little accessories (side table for holding large chunks of meat).

Another rushed power rankings but more solid then last week.

Lurker's power rankings. Last ranking in parenthesis
----------------------------------------------------

1.(1) San Francisco Otaku
Things were clicking right for the Otaku this past week. Pitching wise they got 3 great performances from Hudson and Mulder as starters. Finally as a relief pitching Dotel has finally coming around. Providing 3 saves in the last 5 days. Offensively was a huge week for Scott Rolen. Four homers, ten RBI and an OPS over 1.500 the past six days helped to power this team further up the official rankings. Even through injuries this team has always had someone pick up the pace a bit. The depth of this team has really shown well in this league.

2.(3) Victoria Turret Wall
Just like beating the best team one day doesn't mean much to me neither does losing to the bottom ranked team. Catching a hot team and having a slumping team happens. Next week will show me really what is going to happen. Another poor performance could see a large drop in the rankings. Even though Piazza, Soriano and Blalock all had decent weeks this teams loss was more about a hot beerhound team.

3.(4) Boston Leet Doodz
Beat the team that was ahead of them when both had pretty normal production from everyone. With that the Leet Doodz make the top3 in the league. Nomar is back and he played fairly well for missing so much time. I think you can expect only more and more things from him. Griffey Jr. is one homer away from the 500 club. That seems to be driving him as of late. He has looked fresher and younger then he has in the past half decade.

4.(7) Chicago Chunks
The big jumper of this week. Second week in a row they impressed me. A. Ramirez continues his hot streak racking up the offensive production and on the pitching side things are rounding out. Even though Prior had a hickup things don't look gloomy to me. It seems the spark of Priors return has lite a fire under the other pitchers. Zambrano has been a major help to this team lately. He has been pitching well beyond what you would expect from him. If this team gets a healthy pitching staff it could be a very scary second half team.

5.(3) Everytown Wizards
It would seem the no starting pitching is catching up to this team. Thier offense has been fine to good. Thier relief pitching has been good to great. Could just be midseason dumps and after the break we will find out. I don't expect this team to fall much further.

6.(5) Phoenix Jafds
Early in the season it was Johnson holding this train back. Now it has been Oswalt as of late. This is the most inconsistant team and one of the hardest to figure out. They are either playing super well or super poorly.

7.(8) Phoenix Professional
Mussina came up big recenlty for the Pros. Looking like he knew what he was doing finally. Then the worst thing happened. On his next start he leaves after pitching 3 good innings with groin tightness. This will be a tough week for this pitching staff. Clemens goes up against Prior this Monday. The old vs the new and since most of the starting prowess has been coming from him you need him to do well against the young buck. Despite Sosa being going this team has enough weapons as of late to keep the offensive engine warm without him. I expect bigger and better things when he is back to 100%

8.(6) Portland Failures
Pujols has been cooling off to his regular self again. The offensive being hinged solely on him means this team cools off. Top that off with a dish of Jason Schmidt who didn't pitch nearly to potential his last two starts.

9.(10) Philly DKIs
Aside from Halladay and Willis in pitching this team had nothing go right. Even though they squeaked out a win from a cold cold Jafd squad this team looks doomed to keep falling in power rankings. So much potential in this team and everyone is just not there. I don't know if at this point I would expect them to come around. Hopefully one or two of the offensive giants this team has like Thome comes around to atleast gave this team make a charge for top5.

10.(9) Utah Polygamists
The worry of Brown's back problems drops this team one spot this week. He has been the rock for this teams pitching staff. Old players get injuries but when you depend on a player so heavily as this team does can't have much faith. Zito is the model of inconsistancy, he continues to be a star one week and a clown the next. On the other hand offensively this team is pitching it up. Before it was pretty much Manny but not Chavez, Palmeiro and Berroa are starting to come around. Each of them have been slowly picking up their paces.

11.(11) Syracuse Mandogs
Can't blame Pedro or Bonds this week. They are back to being the two most dangerous people in all of baseball in my opinion. It is just that two people do not make a team. No one have done anything to help this team out besides them this last week. Pedro got two wins in a row with an ERA under 1.00. Bonds had an OPS over 1.400

12.(12) Boston Baby Seal Sox
The Ace of this team might hit the DL this week. The same problems that plague the Polygamists haunt this team. What happens when the glue that holds your staff together disappears. This team has plenty of offensive talent but the pitching has been held together by Schilling. His moving to the DL worries me for this team.

13.(13) L.A. Foot Soldiers
The team that could but wouldn't. Roster filled with superstar names and none of them have really don't anything this year. Even Wagner has only been able to achieve 8 saves this entire year. Aside from Mike Sweeney every single player on this team has played below par for their career. If I had to guess why I would say age. All the names are veterans who just might be running low. Foot Soldiers and Beerhounds are going to be a nice race to see who can not finishout of last.

14.(14) Milwaukee BeerHounds
Team played real well and that was without Ben Sheets having a good week. Beerhounds made a real move to get out of the cellar and almost accomplished that. Offense wasn't spectacular but most of the roster provided support. I don't expect another week like this one so enjoy it  while you have it.

Gas is way more convienent, especially in the winter.  Charcoal tastes better.  If money is no option, there's always this guy.

Four hundred bucks actually isn't really that bad for a top-quality grill, especially a charcoal/gas hybrid with assloads of features.

You're forgetting that I live in Texas, where the winters get as harsh as a bitter 50 degrees.

Kids today have so many advantages I never had.  There's no telling what I could've accomplished with a home computer and a handgun.

Also, my budget is way smaller than that.  I'm thinking under $150.

Good lord, I completely misread that as "four hundred bucks actually isn't really that bad for a top-quality girl".
