I was surfing past EBGames.com and I saw this:

Prince of Persia

PlayStation 2 - $44.99
Xbox - $44.99
GameCube - $49.99
Windows PC - $39.99

Anyone else see something odd here? I did a little more searching around their site, and sure enough, the trend seems to persist across other titles.  PC cheaper, Gamecube more expensive.  Anyone care to make any guesses about why?

Because PC games are a buyer's market and the Gamecube says "Nintendo" on the side?

The media doesn't educate, it sensationalizes. That's why there's no learning curve, just repeated bouts of gross stupidity. Bailey

That sucks about the Gamecube, but what are you gonna do?  Except, I guess, buy it for one of the other platforms.

Me, I got a nice surprise yesterday when I bought Rebel Strike and it had magically dropped $10 off the sticker price.  Lord knows how charging less than you say you are will increase sales.

All the console versions have various unlockable versions of previous PoP games. The PC version doesn't have any.

So, licencing fees. Mystery, solved!

Isn't it also a factor that PC game publishers don't need to make up for selling you a console at a loss?

Well, it's hard not to note that the game version gets cheaper the easier it is to pirate it on a particular platform. See? Gamecube, no pirating, you're fucked. PS2 & XBox, get a chip or a chipped one. PC, ask a friend to burn it if you're too stupid to use Usenet. Piracy is consumer's furry friend, after all!

PC prices are dumped to counter the warez.

GC games are priced higher to make up for a lesser install base.

The great* thing about the Gamecube version is that you can only unlock the original games through connectivity with the GBA version.

*not great

Okay, I'm wrong. You can also unlock it by finding a hidden area. But the GC version only has POP1, while the Xbox has POP1 and POP2.

That to me is the wankiest thing Nintendo tries to do.  I picked up a GC-GBA link to try it out with Rebel Strike, but the chances of me ever buying the same game for both platforms is arbitrarily close to zero.

Who the hell wants PoP1 with revamped graphics? The original rotoscoping is the only reason I'd want to go back to such a beloved old title.

I think the price difference is due to the fact that there are no royalties or QA fees for PC games. Also there are a lot more titles released for PCs than for consoles in any given time period, so competition drives the prices down. Capitalism at its finest.

And as lqf mentioned you can pirate Gamecube games, but it requires that you buy a Gamecube network adapter and stream the pirated games to the Gamecube via a PC client-server application which emulates the disc reading subsystem of the Gamecube. So because the Gamecube network adapters have an install base of approximately thirty people worldwide and the process involved in the piracy requires more technical prowess than piracy on other platforms, it hasn't really become a big problem yet. And it is only going to get less viable because the tools used to dump Gamecube games (which are usually kept away from the general public by pirate groups in order to ensure a consistent level of quality dumps) were recently leaked.

That's pretty much it.  There's a ton of fees of royalties a developer/publisher has to pay to submit to the Big Three.  Hell, you have to pay money just to submit a version for the approval process (this is the "QA fees" G-Man is alluding to here, where Sony's in-house QA group does their TRC/technical check, MS's TCR group, Nintendo's Lot Check, etc etc), and if you fail you'll have to pay again when you resubmit.  Want to remaster a build for a second production run with minor code changes?  Resubmit.

Then there's all the dev and debug hardware you have to get.  And software.  And support.  And we haven't even gotten into manufacturing!  Whee.

I'm not sure I buy the piracy angle.

Only a year ago, BioWare and Blizzard felt they could get away with selling Neverwinter Nights and Warcraft III for $55-60.  And as I recall, it worked.  Is it really believable to think that piracy has increased so much to cause a dramatic decrease in pricing?

Or is it possible its EBGames' attempt to try and unload PC software faster than they have been?

I agree with the point you make after this, but would like to point out that Blizzard can get away with charging any ridiculous amount of money, since everyone will buy their games always no matter what regardlessly anyway.

Big difference. But I like your attitude.

Re: Payola for developing for consoles
And there are also advertising coop funds (although it can be like this too on PC side with slotting fees and print ads). But to be fair there are also programs like Nintendo's Q-Fund etc to provide incentives for developers to make games for the platform.

The standard holiday 'deal', AFAIK, is still $179 for the Xbox, Tetris Worlds, Clone Wars and 2 months of Xbox Live.  Clone Wars is fun for a while, Tetris Worlds sucks.  Live is cool but you'll need to get proper games to play on it, like Crimson Skies.

If you are going to buy an Xbox, I would suggest buying one pre-modded, even if you aren't a pirate. Or DIY if you are technically minded.

Also I wonder why this didn't get much press on any of the major gaming news sites.

I try very hard (actually it isn't that hard) to not reply to posts that are written just to garner attention, but I am interested in the mentality behind the people who actively engage in what is basically crude social engineering as a hobby. So I voted yes to Joker's tell-all topic. But I don't really have anything to comment on the situation except that, the reason that Balderama probably continued to get responses even though he talked about the same things over and over, while other trolls who repeat themselves aren't responded to as often, is that many of the old time posters here considered Flamethrower to be a respectable poster who often times had useful points to contribute to a conversation. I honestly wonder what he would think of your masquerading as him for so long. I'm not sure how I would feel about someone doing that to me.
