Unreal XMP
December 8th 2003, 14:51 CET by bago

The spiel:

"This demo is a single level from Unreal II XMP ('Expanded Multiplayer'). The all new XMP mode is a class-based multiplayer game where teams use vehicles, cooperation and Unreal II: The Awakening's devastating weaponry to battle it out across large-scale terrain maps. Teams fight for control of energy sources to power their war machines, deployment points to get to the front lines quickly, and ultimately, four artifacts that are required to win each match."

Grab it from your favorite fileserver. Here's a quick linky fest.

This game is going the way of Tribes. Lot's of fun stuff to do but as usual it's impossible to get a good game on a public server.

Well, I'd love to give it a try, but it just hangs on my system.  Can't kill it when it does either.  So I reboot, I try again.  It still doesn't love me.  *shrugs*

It's fun and a surprisingly well-rounded freebie add-on. As for the lack of team play, it's literally only a few days old. Sheesh, give people time to get used to it. It's not like people will read the included tutorial or anything silly like that.

The effect of hacking a system does look disturbingly like spraying green pee on it, however.

SoF2 is the only teamplay based online shooter where I thought the majority of people did a pretty good job of teamwork, even on public servers.  Yeah, there was an occasional teamkilling bunghole, but they were fairly rare.  Also, the teamplay mechanics were admittedly more simple than Tribes, BF1942, etc; not sure about Unreal 2 MP as I haven't played it, nor am I likely to (see Deth's post above, link it to the previous 5 marketing threads).

Somehow, I always managed to play in good games of Day of Defeat where players acted as a team.

It's also been forever since I've played a game with other humans over the net, preferring to stay with single-player games and bots.

And, I will once again curse Valve, because my goddamn Condition Zero still isn't out. They have repeatedly mention it coming out "soon," with no word that it has been delayed from the November 11th release date. Half-life 2 and Condition Zero had both better be perfect games straight from heaven, or I think I'm going to have to sever my fanboy connection with Valve.

jjohnsen -

And EB says March. I'd like to pretend that it's coming out on the 30th, but I've heard too many "next week!" and "this date, PROMISE!" that I want to go mad. Valve is jerking all over their customers' faces, though I guess it is fair to say that it was probably one of those same customers who broke through their shit security.

Oh well, at least there are other games to play. Is anyone else having fun with Need for Speed: Underground? I'm not a big fan of racing games or ricing cars, but I'm having a hell of a time with this game. Especially since I was able to start my ricing career with a Miata, and not make some monstrosity out of an Accura or Civic. The atmosphere is great, the game is intense, and the soundtrack fits perfectly.

What a shitacular game, if I wanted to race, I want to race, you know, in something with more than 55Bhp that sounds like a bee stuck in a pint glass. Lets not even mention the fuckwittery of neon underbelly lights and ironing board sized spoilers on front wheel drive cars.

Have there been any mapper changes over at Epic? Everyone knows I'm a UT fanboy, but I'm really hoping the quality of maps on release with UT2K4 is much improved over the previous renditions. I mean, really... a one-on-one map that's a figure-eight? Meh.

Have you played Burnout 2?  The racing part is very similar to NFSU, but a LOT more fun, IMO.

No car customization or good soundtrack in Burnout 2 though (in fact the soundtrack is quite horrible -- but luckily you can swap it out with your own tracks (on the Xbox)).

Re: ricer games.
I got Midnight Club 2 for the PC and it was fun for what I could play.  The difficulty is a bitch and you have to spend a lot of time learning a race before you have a chance at winning.  Riding the motorcycles is a reall hoot, much more fun than Vice City.  One downside is that you cannot customize the cars at all, well, except for color (I think), but that doesn't count.  Anyway, real hard game.  I got to Paris but didn't get beyond the few initial races.

Regarding XMP,

It seems like a good enough game but needs quite a bit of polishing. The vehicles I've found so far are of little to no use in most cases. The ability to leap 50 ft in the air pretty much makes the laser fences useless. I'm also having difficulty finding any server where the lag isn't excessive. I like the classes, and the map layout, and the guns seem to be fairly well balanced.

Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me, you.

Unless you use the fences inside the bases.

The vehicles feel a bit stiff but I'm probably just used to fishtailing all over the place in Halo's warthog.

Sadly it's lacking collision damage (well the demo was at lest). That allow cuts out 95% of the fun, especial in the obstacle course mode, opps I mean drag race mode.

NFSU was surprisingly acceptable. I loathe street racing, but I enjoy this game. I loathe rap and numetal, but I have to admit it feels highly appropriate for the game experience. And while I really think ricer cars look stupid, I duly enjoy customizing my ride every few races when I get tired of the design I've whipped up.

Ds

You don't get a good car/upgrade until the first tournament or so. I'm in around 85/111 goals in the game, and my vehicle is so ridiculously overpowered now that I have to drive by memory, since I pretty much can't react in time with mere visual input.
