Age Old Arguments
October 28th 2004, 19:14 CEST by lwf

Alright, here's the deal, comrades: State your views on the following subjects (you could add a subject if you like, too), with as little or as much detail as you care to. Try to be thorough however, and avoid one word answers and explain your reasons why. The idea here is for everyone to have a good understanding of where everyone else stands on matters. I suspect we will discover from this that none of us give a single damn about anyone but ourselves, as you won't even take the time to read other people's entries. I will personally make it my goal to read everybody's though, it's the least I can do to make up for all I've put you through over the years.

Religion: Is it slavery? Do you like it? What is yours? Care to define it for anyone?

Life (Death): It's meaning? Lack thereof? Purpose? Relationship advice you want to share? Abortion? Future life? Immortality? Heaven, Hell, God and all his friends (As separate from Religion)? Let fly on most anything life or consciousness related.

Government: How should we govern ourselves? Are you a socialist (state takes care of people)? Or are you the other thing, the one where people have to think for themselves and employ rational self-interest? Are you half dozen one and 6 the other? Tell us all about it. Write your own constitution.

Discrimination: This word has gotten a bad rap. Some forms of discrimination are reasonable. What do you think about the obviously evil ones? Any ideas on solutions, in your mind?

Sex: Think of the children! Is sex naughty? Should we make a big deal out of it or what? Are your sex attitudes as fucked up as everyone elses? Tell us all about it.

Drugs: How do you feel about drugs. You can name specific drugs if you want. Try not to be an idiot though and say something stupid like all drugs are bad or all drugs are great. What should be done about drugs? Try to stay within reality.

Music: What do you think of music? Genres or bands you like would be suitable here. How does music typically make you feel, how does it benefit your existence?

Movies: Same as music, kind of. I'm getting lazy now. I think you can probably figure out the rest and have an idea what I want from you. Now deliver, damn you!

This is the one thread where everyone puts forth their wacky fucking worldviews and we all try to change each other's minds. The first one to do so gets a candy cane. Of course I will just eat it myself since you two were obviously colluding.

Didn't we just discuss these topics within the last 2 months?  Aren't these what all topics eventually break down to?  Do they need their own topic?

I say we make this a sports only thread just to keep on topic.

I don't have a problem with beer being filling because I don't like getting drunk.  Therefore, the only reason for a beer to be less filling is so that you get drunker easier.

What's with suddenly calling everything slavery?  You know what's a good gauge of slavery?  Beatings.  There aren't a lot of beatings in any church I've been to.  That doesn't make it less stupid or dangerous, but it's not slavery.

Religion: Not slavery, I'm a bad Christian

Life (Death): Meh.

Government: I'm pretty damn libertarian, but don't mind government spending that benefits all.  Roads are good, public art is fine, scientific research is aok as long as everyone can use the results.

Discrimination: Live and let live.  Giving benefits or penalties to people based on race, religion or sexual preferences is stupid.

Sex: Nobody wants to hear about my sex life.  It's both scary and boring.

Drugs: I like booze.  I'm okay with people taking whatever drugs they want.  Have fun.

Music: I listen to music, but not as much as I used to.  I'm still stuck in the 80s/early 90s.

Movies: Movies are fun.  Please make more good ones.

Art: Art is good.  Not everything is art.

Plot in videogames: Good if it's a good plot, otherwise skip it.

Graphics in videogames: I approve of them.  Too hard to play audiogames.

PC Gaming, dead or alive: Alive until the mmogs move over.

Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

Religion:  Great for those of weak mind.

Life (Death): Good when good, bad when bad.

Government: Better than none.

Discrimination: A case could be made for or against it.

Sex:  Something I like.  Everyone should have it.

Drugs: My drug exposure is limited.  I'd like to try LSD.

Music:  I like a lot of music and a lot of music other people like I don't like.

Movies: Same as music, kind of.

Art:  What?

Plot in videogames:  Good when not force fed.

Graphics in videogames:  Useful but not the focus.

PC Gaming, dead or alive:  On life support, chance of recovery slim, chances of hanging on forever?  excellent.

Life (Death): It's all love.

Government: Corrupt and almost broken.

Discrimination: not love.

Sex:  Something American's shouldn't be so prudie about.

Drugs: To each their own.  Setup some dealies like that new thing Canada to help people with their drug problems.

Music:  I like a bit of everything.

Movies: Same.

Art:  Everything is art.

Don't listen to Bob, whatever you do. The only thing DXM and LSD have in common in terms of effects is that haze you're in for the next week as your body recovers from the poundings of horrible synthetic drugs. Now that I've put that aside, I'm ashamed to admit I have extracted DXM from Robitussin and ingested it that way. Besides the motor-control issues (They call it robo-walking for a reason) it was insanely interesting, but I'd never do it again. I don't know anybody who does it habitually, because last I checked they've proven it tunnels gaping holes into your brain. Anyone with a hook on this shit would be braindead before they'd had a few years of abuse under their belts.

Life (Death): We need to respect both more.

Government: I don't mind big, so long as it's responsible to the people.

Discrimination: Be excellent to each other.  And party on dudes.

Sex:  Yes please?

Drugs: Recreational?  No thanks.  But the war on drugs is bullshit.

Music:  Hugely important.  Love it intensely, all kinds.

Movies: Not quite as important as music, but also big.

Art:  Good stuff.  Find what you like.

Plot in videogames:  Good.

Graphics in videogames:  Not as important as plot, but you need some, and beauty isn't bad.

Did I mention that I'm currently painting my kitchen green?  I only mention it because I was amazed at what "green" actually is.  It's not just "green", it's "artichoke", "leafy", "pine", and about eighty other things.

That said, my kitchen will be "green peppercorn".

Religion: Devout agnostic. I believe that it is, at my current level of knowledge and intelligence, totally impossible for me to know whether or not there is a God. I feel that this is probably true of all other people, but I don't know for certain. If God were to exist, I think it preposterously unlikely that he would fit the specific mould of any one of the religions we see on earth. Organised religions leave a bad taste in my mouth, but this isn't so much the fault of religion per se as the wanton crass stupidity of people in general, who have an awesome ability to fuck up even the most pleasant of ideologies.

Life: Generally, I'm against it. There are few exceptions.

Art: Yes, everything can be art, but not everything can be good art. Duchamp's Fountain was good art at the time because it scathingly kick-started post-modernity, which was a very novel concept. The fact it has been accepted in the art world without understanding the irony intended is furtherly ironic, but deeply depressing. Unfortunately, since then, art has been stuck in the post-modernist plug-hole of Duchamp's urinal and can't climb out because of the relentless streams of piss from charlatans and piggy-backers.
