Us humans are a simple lot, after a hard day of killing things we like to come home, eat something, shag something and then sleep.  As such our entertainment reflects these core values, perhaps not so much the less exciting eating and sleeping, but sex and violence are, and always have been, the stuff of legend, tale and epic.

Now bonking in games isn't totally unheard of, I first came across it in the rather excellent Dreamweb where your character walks in on (and then executes) a rock star during coitus.  From there it's mostly downhill; strip poker games that aren't much more than low quality porn slideshows, hentai games that mine all the gameplay of violent, underage rape, and a thousand inverted-L shaped heroines with low-cut, cleavage-revealing textures.

Okay so it doesn't actually have to be actual kasbah-rockage, there's the much broader categories of Romance and Relationships which are also largely ignored.  Being male I don't know whether I'd play it, but the game equivalent of the chick-flick might be interesting, and would presumably ensnare that much talked about "female demographic".  I know the only reason I finished Neverwinter Nights was because I wanted to see if you could cop off with the bard (you couldn't, the frigid bitch), so there's something to it, although I shudder to think how it might apply to MMORPGs.

So what do you and your libido say?  Does the world of games and the fair art of rogering sound like a match made in heaven?  Is it doomed to be just another ploy to pump us of our liquid assets?  Or indeed, will it remain at the current schoolboy-tittering level it is now?

Sex sells, but there's plenty of opportunity to do represent it badly in a game. Max Payne 2 does imply a bit of the nasty, but it isn't put out directly. I guess if you don't count the many badly made Hentai games, there really isn't a game out there that just sells sex on its own.

Or is there?

I was happy with how the sex was presented in Gothic 1 & 2, and I'd be happy if "tasteful" continued to relatively outpace "explicit" in all other games.

Unless, of course, I'm playing an explicitly sexualized game. I'm not sure why I would, but if I am, I want a speculum to be my default weapon.

I'm probably a bit premature with this and definitely leaving myself open to ridicule, but I think that in many ways the industry is maturing. The demographic is becoming broader and broader - gamers are playing games until they are older and more and more females are becoming interested in the hobby. There are a variety of reasons for this - the near ubiquitousness of the PlayStation1/2 for example - but the upshot is that developers and publishers are slowly starting to create and produce games that aren't aimed at the 12-18 bracket.

So, I reckon that as time goes by, we'll see more and more games that deal with adult themes in an adult fashion.

I dunno why Adult Themes and Adult Language always have to mean sex and swear words.

Now, lord knows I love sex and swearing, but it has to have purpose to be in my games. Swearing in vice city goes with the flow, it's out of place in Mario Sunshine. Same with the sex.

I honestly don't see many games being set in the "adult theme" that's often found as a disclaimer to movies or TV shows.  "Adult situations" in that context are basically meant in the fashion of maturity level.  Watching people have adult conversations or talk about pressing personal issues on TV is sometimes entertaining.  Interacting with it might not be so good.  The only thing that comes near this is the role playing type stuff where you're interacting with real people...but that can be extremely detrimental to people's relationships outside of, say, their house.

Recently Jedi Knight 2 and Elite Force 2 added a bit of romance and 'kissing polygons' but it all seemed very clumsy to me.

There have been sex-oriented games in the past (besides those already named there was this one FMV game where you had to seduce women to be treated to a softcore sex scene, and I remember a few non-hentai manga games where you could 'unlock' pictures of nude girls).

I think it would be an interesting experiment to create a game that allows interaction and arrouses at the same time. What about a game where you have a naked lady lying in front of you and you can pleasure her by clicking and moving the mouse along certain areas of her body? Ok, that might be a little immature. I stand down.

It's been done.  I'm ashamed to admit that I know this, but there was a 3D-modeled game years ago that involved just that (the nudity/clicking concept)...Virtual Valerie or something of that nature...It included both softcore nudity and hardcore...activity.  You can probably find it on Kazaa if you're bored :)

I think the real question here is...where do you draw the line between a normal game and pornography...BMX XXX somewhat skewed the line, though the nudity involved was apparently so comical as to be stupid.  DOA Beach Volleyball was probably the best example of blatant abuse of a series to date, but it seems to have a limited cult following.  The majority of the gaming industry will likely try to stay away from this stigma, as they've learned that sexual gimmicks don't always equate to huge sales figures.  When you spend more money trying to defend yourself than you make on the game you're defending, it's not really worth it.

That is, from what I've heard about DOA BV, it's not just gratuitous er... bikini action, there's a fairly strong sports/relationship simulator in there as well. And chicks dig that. Not the... em... the gratuitous bikini.. stuff. Which they may or may not... er.... dig.

hey, DOAX was quite fun. The volleyball aspect was actually pretty cool and you had all sorts of little games in between. Though it sucks if your partner ditches you because it can be very hard to persuade anybody else since they always throw your gifts in the garbage.

Thus the cult following :)

There will always be games that shed the stereotype they've been given, and if DOAX is one of them, that's great!  Everyone touted it as a male-centric title, even the publishers (I think we all remember the commercial.)  It's an example of gameplay allowing concessions for the sexuality involved.

While I agree that DOAX had gameplay that surpassed its stereotype (not that its own marketing helped), they could have at least thrown in some male players (there's enough in the DOA "universe", anyway).  I honestly think they could have easily captured sex appeal for both genders that way, instead of focusing on just one.

I think I'd like to see more fully fleshed out romantic storylines in games.  Not necessarily sex, but I'd like to see romance drive a game as much as revenge or greed or whatever basic human motivations.  That doesn't necessarily mean a weepy "chick flick" of a game, although that might be interesting as well.

For a movie in the vein I'm thinking of, maybe Last of the Mohicans.

I wouldn't expect too much in the way of "adult games" in the near future.  That shit won't be carried by Walmart, you know.  Standard American Conservative views will prevail for now -- violence is ok as long as there are no satanic overtones, but sex? Forget about it.

I more mean, the lady can save the guy.  Or they can save each other.  Or the guy can save another guy. Or it could be family oriented, siblings, parent's and children.  I'm just saying broaden up the range of human motivations to action a little bit beyond greed, anger, or an abstract heroic duty to save the world.

The Movies looks pretty cool if you ask me.  I mean, yeah, Black & White sucked but that isn't the only game Molyneux has ever produced, and everyone is allowed to make mistakes from time to time.  Syndicate alone is reason enough for me to assume the best when he's involved.  Of course, if The Movies turns out as bad as Black & White, I'm going to start needing to play demos before I buy... but for now he still gets the benefit of the doubt.
