PC Gaming is Dead! Long Live PC Gaming!
October 13th 2003, 15:02 CEST by Squeaky

An interesting forum post over at Sudhian. With all this rampant piracy within the PC Gaming industry, how much longer do you think it will last until the whole industry implodes in a shower of multi-coloured gibs?

According to the post, many developers are seriously considering leaving the PC gaming industry in favour of the somewhat more secure world of consoles. Obviously, console games can still be warez’d. All you need is a dvd-burner, a little bit of help from Google, and some skill with a soldering iron (or you can take it into the shop you lazy fuckmonkey).

Safedisc, Securom, etc, while (somewhat) effective in the short term, will have no long term feasibility. Incompatibilities, bugs, and a whole host of other problems, may tarnish the name of PC gaming even further as more and more become frustrated with not being able to play the game they just spent $60 on. This as we all know, leads to Gamecopyworld.

It seems to me, that the best way to combat console piracy would be to develop proprietary media formats, such as the Gamecube mini-DVD disc (so how much do those things hold, anyway?). The problem with this could be an increased in price (R&D, manufacturing, etc), that will inevitably be passed on to the consumer.

How do you think the PC gaming industry can dig itself out of this mess of swashbuckling pirates? A couple of years ago, the answer could’ve been as simple as switching to DVD. But now you can pick up a DVD±R/±RW for a few hundred dollars. And as new technologies are increasingly encroaching in our day-to-day lives, users are becoming more and more computer savvy. Online key checks are another good way, but what about single player only games? Are there any other ways of combating PC piracy (short of reporting everyone's IP to the authorities)?

The vast majority of PC game development can break off from the mainland and slide right into the ocean, for all I care. There's only perhaps 6 titles per year that are worth any discerning person's time, and what's with this insane rush to voraciously consume games and then sit around pining for the next one? Savor them.

Deer Hunter 9, a console exclusive? Boo hoo wah wah.

Goddammit Des, I was planning on using that simpsons quote for this thread.  Fucker.

I don't see how consoles will ever replace PCs until they come with standard issue keyboards and mouses.

Ever tried playing a FPS with a gamepad? Or an RTS? Or an RPG? It can work but it works real crappy.

Hell yes I do, and if I never have to worry again about my code working on one machine but not another, I'd be the happiest programmer to ever live.

I don't think piracy is the reason that PC gaming is dead (at least we all agree on that). Rather, I think it's because a decent video card costs more than a console.

We do? It's certainly a factor. Money is also a factor, and there are big piles of money on the console side of things.

Charles is following the wrong career track.  He would ease his workday at the expense of your functionality.  He would trade a challenging job for a 9to5 punchclock routine.  He would trade your computer for a consumer appliance.  The kitchen is hot for a reason, Charles.  You may want to get out.

No problems with video cards-
No scratched media-
No SafeDisc or SecureRom problems-
No minimum requirements-
And multiplayer meant you called up your cousin to come over and spend the night.

Admittedly, the price of buying a top of the line PC would allow you to buy all the current consoles, extra controllers, memory cards, and online play upgrades, plus a tidy collection of titles. Perhaps there is something to the medium.
