Craplets
October 2nd 2003, 00:32 CEST by Dumdeedum First up is the news that The Bard's Tale is back and being remade by Brian Fargo (of Wasteland & Fallout fame). Much beloved by many aged gamers, we can soon expect many hazy anecdotes about how the original was better. It's an age old debate: do people suck? Gamespot apply it astutely to the gaming community and conclude that yes, yes they do. Thankfully it's fixable by a) the threat of physical violence and b) making games more fun. Amazing stuff indeed, but at least the article came with an amusing pelican picture. The Beeb took time out from real journalism to ponder whether theft of items in online games is as serious as, y'know, actual factual crime. Quoting the South Korean police as receiving more than 22,000 reports of game related "cybercrime" this year alone, it seems we've finally discovered who to report that wallhacking AWP whore to. And finally for lovers of those other, quaint media types there's trailers for The Return Of The King and The Matrix: Revolutions available. Most important however is the imminent release of a new Pratchett book. Discuss! |

#0 "Dumdeedum" Discuss! Bard's Tale: Could be good, could miss the funny target by trying too hard. From the teaser website, right now it's leaning towards trying too hard. People: Whatever. Cybercrime: KEKEKEKE Films and books: Hitler wrote a book. "All I've ever wanted to be is a monkey of moderate intelligence that wears a suit. That's why I'm transferring to business school!"

Much beloved by many aged gamers, we can soon expect many hazy anecdotes about how the original was better. I've never played the Bard's Tale, so I have no comment. They need to put Aladdin on DVD. sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar

Everyone should go and see Young Adam. I love Pratchett, but you can have too much of a good thing, and after reading, I dunno, maybe 10 of his books, I'm more interested in investigating other styles of writing. |

I always buy paperbacks because they're cheaper and more portable, so I'm much more excited about Night's Watch, which was released on the same day. I don't care about online movie trailers because I have every confidence I will see them again and again and again, whether I want to or not, until I'm sick of them and seriously considering not seeing the movie. Never played Bard's Tale, new version will probably suck. The Gamespotting column pretty much sums up the reasons I don't play on public servers. And even more than that, I've found that there are some people who are assholes even when you CAN walk up and slap them. I played TA with a group of friends and friends-of-friends. We agreed not to use nukes, but one guy went ahead and built them anyway. Luckily I'd already died by that point, because I would've been seriously pissed. So, I would say that you not only have to know the people you play with in real life, but you also have to screen those people. Oh, and the pelican picture is funny enough that I've considered sending it to my non-gamer friends, even though I'd have to explain it. |

#4 Marsh Davies Everyone should go and see Young Adam. I love Pratchett, but you can have too much of a good thing, and after reading, I dunno, maybe 10 of his books, I'm more interested in investigating other styles of writing. I've only read 3 Pratchett books (Colour of Magic, Light Fantastic, and Hogfather). I figure I could go for another two or three before I get burned out. Oh and I just finished reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson, I quite liked it (mostly). Pratchett has evolved a lot. His later books are much better stories, but not nearly as funny. Personally, I never burned out on him largely because I only read one at a time, with other books in between. Now that I've read all of his previous stuff, I have no choice but to continue rationing. |

Bards Tale was a great game, but this one looks like just another action RPG. Devils Whiskey is the real Bards Tale game. Pratchett is great, somebody should make a movie. I put the lime in the coconut, I drank it all up.

Devils Whiskey is the real Bards Tale game. I think not. While Devil Whiskey may be prettier, the writing will make you want scoop out your eyes to end the pain. #8 Pratchett is great, somebody should make a movie. I disagree. Take all the funny wordy stuff out of the books (as most of it has no way to be represented in film) and you would be left with something far less enjoyable. IMO. |
|
There are Pratchett movies. Well, sorta.... Reaper Man and Soul Music were made as a series of 30 minute cartoons over in merry old pengland. You can buy them collected on DVD so you get the whole story. At first viewing, they mostly suck. Watching them a second time, they're a bit better. The animation is substandard and, apart from Christopher Lee voicing Death, the voices are usually just passable. Of the two, I'd say Soul Music was the better. No match for the books though. Oh, and the day I burn out on Pratchett is the day I give up on the written word. His skill with pacing, composition wise (not story/plot wise) is top shelf. Oook? I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

I think they could make a decent Pratchett movie if he was as involved with it as JK Rowling was with her movies. However, he's stated that someone can make a Discworld movie when they are willing to front the money. So far, no one's been willing to do that. |

I'd like to mention I voted no for this topic.* *Though I may have actually voted no, this post was in no way to share that, but only annoy those who hate it when people post they voted no. How is it someone can talk up a game, as Brian has done, as bringing something new to the genre when all he is presenting is an Action RPG with heavy use of non-interactive cut scenes all in a remake of old game? |
|
It's using the baldur's gate whatever engine. suck. the rain hits the ground and the trees they dry it up

Quicken...you know we love the rosy glasses here. Personally, I never really got into the original, so no big deal. Now if someone was remaking Eye of the beholder, Dragons Wars, or the like, I'd be thoroughly interested. :) "I'm an extreme programmer. I don't plan anything when I code."- Lord Nekrull

I don't have any experience with the Bard's Tale series, but the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance engine is well done. So I expect the game to at least look good and move fluidly. We are OK in a misguided, sadist way.

f--ing glad of that. Sorry for the confusion. I've read about 20 of the 25 Pratchett discworld books and I'm still not sick of them. |
|
I read a different preview of the Bard's Tale game and got instantly excited when I saw a screenshot that looked like the original game. I figured he (Brian Fargo) was doing a direct port to the PS2 with some graphical tweaks. I was totally pumped! Then I read further and saw the actual screenshots and cursed his name for fagging up my childhood memories. Respawn Games

I agree that Small Gods is a good one if you're trying to be choosy about which Pratchett to read. |

And if you haven't read Good Omens...well go read it. |

Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman. It is apparently being turned into a film, with Terry Gilliam slated to direct. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey

Good Omens was pretty damned cool. Personal favourite Pratchett book has to be Sourcery though. In other news, my mouse seems to move left-right at its own behest. I cleaned the gubbage from the inside but to no avail. Do I need to buy a new mouse? |

I got my copy autographed by Mr. Gaiman - he doesn't live too far from me, actually. I believe I can fly......urk.

Small Gods is probably the one that gets the most reads by me. Soul Music is perhaps the other one...there's just something about that scene as she rides into town by the guards and one of them elbows the other going: "That was her!" "Who?" "You know...SUSAN DEATH!" AAAAHAHAHAHAAHAH!! Ahem. If you like Pratchett, give Robert Rankin a whirl. You can find him at www.amazon.co.uk, the shipping isn't really that bad. I recommend 'A Dog Called Demolition' or 'The book of ultimate truths'. It's definitely a case of style over content, but the style is just soooo good. Two books is probably pretty good, as it gets repetitive after that, though. Pratchett's definitely gotten over the style thing, and recently books have a lot more content. The most recent one, um...Night Watch, I think, was downright contemplative. Much heavier than previous. So I'm rather curious about the new one... Doesn't Gaiman live in Minnesota now? I should go stalk as well... (Minneapolis here). Every string which has one end also has another end - Finagle's First Fundamental Finding

I thought Pratchett's Night Watch was a big step forward for him. Less weak puns, not to mention darker and more adult in tone. I'd recommend it for anyone that feels burned out by his earlier books. If his new one is similar, it should be a good read. |
