Build me a pyre to roast my friends upon.
September 20th 2003, 07:09 CEST by Ashiran

Seeing as there are quite some people interested in doing a mod I took the liberty to offer an opportunity to channel the Power into this thread. Unless everybody was just kidding about doing such a project, read on.

Depending on how many people are really interested in doing this we will need several things. Apart from m4d sk1llz we will need some other things as well.
Primarily, what is the mod going to be about and for which engine will it be?

On the first half of the question, while everyone loves to nurture the little idea-man inside, we have to be democratic. So I suggest everyone feeling idea like posting a short design document with a rough outline.
Onward to the second half of the question. If you want exposure you need the latest. If you want to make something cool you need the thing most people can work with. I’m assuming everyone is interested in the second one so that will be either Quake (1,2,3) or UT.

Then there is the matter of participation. Now this is the hard part. No matter how excited you are about doing something now, if you aren’t committed you will drop out soon (the fate of the vast majority of mod groups). Plain and simple, you need a work ethic even though you’re not getting paid. It won’t be fun all the way so you got to take the good with the bad. You have to finish stuff like this pretty fast because the longer it runs the more likely people are to drop out.

Now if you feel like occasionally contributing that’s fine but in that case you are a freelancer and not a core member. Which is an important distinction to make. Anything beyond this point depends on who decides to chime in so I will leave it in your hands now.

PS. The mod must contain beam weapons and/or mini snickers.

Once the Mod has begun developement; I want to be the guy who feels that they are the Mod's most important community member.

-The one who holds the pulse of the entire as of yet formed community in his hands.
-The guy who constantly asks about being on the beta test team.
-The guy who calls the FBI to complain about violation of his free speech rights when you ban his ass from your forums for being an obnoxious troll.
-The guy who switches nicks and gets a new internet account when you ban his IP for the aforementioned reason.

Can I please? Huh?

You guys Rawk!

I want to be a leveldesigner and idea man! I love making sci-fi themed maps, so we definitely gotta have a lot of those. I also love fantasy movies so we gotta have a lot of fantasy stuff in there too!

oh, and my favorite genres are FPS, adventure games and DDR so the mod has to be first person and you can shoot stuff and it's gotta have jumping puzzles where you also have to keep dancing to the beat in order to complete the puzzle.

Am I hired?

Enh, there's no reason at all why a small number of crappers couldn't make some reasonable mod.  Pick a game engine/mod toolset.  Pick a modest idea.  Do it.  Link it.  It's tempting to try, if only to shush the snarkers assuming it's impossible.  For all it's faults, the crap does have some talented folks.

Okay here is my idea for a multiplayer FPS gameplay modification:

Project Name: Defender

This is a team-based modification for a shooter. There are two teams, the Defenders and the Attackers. The Defenders always spawn inside a structure within the map and their goal it to stay alive as long as possible. The Attackers spawn outside the structure and their goal is to kill all of the Defenders as quickly as possible. The twist is that it is impossible for the Defenders to win in the traditional sense (e.g. by killing everyone on the Attackers' team). This is because the Attackers have an unlimited respawn on a schedule similar to that used by Day of Defeat. The Defenders however only a limited number of lives (1 to 3 - would need to be play balanced to determine the "fun" number of lives). So the goal of the Defenders then becomes to last as long as possible. Once the Attackers have won, the map reloads with the teams switching positions (ala UT's Assault mode), and the new Defenders then have a chance to beat the old Defenders' time. The game point will go to the Defender team who lasted the longest. If the Defenders last longer than a preset time limit (say 15 minutes) then the map ends and the sides switch anyway. In the event of a tie in timing, both sides get a game point.

To even the sides, the Defenders will have much more hitpoints and more powerful weapons than the Attackers. They may also have some healing stations in some manner. The structure that the Defenders will be in will also have a number of environmental weapons (e.g. turrets, cannons, mines, etc.) to assist them in repulsing the Attackers. And there will need to be auto team balancing code or even locked teams to keep the game fair. So this is the basic gameplay mechanic.

The other innovation is to have the maps reflect various historical or fantasy situations similar to the gameplay mechanic, e.g. Custer's Last Stand, Helm's Deep, Siege of Troy, Cops vs. Bank Robbers, WWI trenches, Starship Troopers etc. What I mean by this is to have the weapons, models and geometry change with each new map to reflect a given historical or fantastical scenario that is in keeping with the gameplay of the mod. This idea of making mini-mods within mods has never been done as far as I know. But I think it is a great idea to keep things fresh and exciting for the player (and gives it a sort of Wario Ware feel). The gameplay remains the same but the flavor changes, so guns become replaced with crossbows, cutlasses with electric prods, etc. The team names will also change to reflect the scenario, etc. So to be a successful player of this mod you would need to become expert with all of the different weapon types in the game. I recognize that this would effectively hamper the ability of third parties to make maps suitable for the mod, or for the mod to run on third-party maps unmodified.

So in summary the mod (which has never been attempted before as far as I know) would combine the gameplay of UT's Assault mode with Last Man Standing and various Siege style mods (WOT, Heretic II, etc.) But the other twist is that each map is a miniature mod in of itself completely altering the look and feel of the gameplay while retaining its core mechanics. This has absolutely never been done (as far as I know). The problem with this idea is that it is far too complex for the PC team to handle and the "mini-mod" idea requires the production of a lot more models/weapon effects/weapon sounds than most mods.

Whilst it's more likely to get completed, I wouldn't work on a mod that was just a slight modification of multiplayer, because it's not likely to be very interesting for me to play. I find the billion multiplayer mods to be a fairly unnecessary supplement to the vanilla versions.

Very little opportunity for exciting art, too.

True, but it IS good experience.  You take a project from start to finish and have something to show for it at the end.  I wish more teams would start small and build up instead of diving ass first into something they obviously can never complete.
