Pre-ordering is evil
September 17th 2003, 22:46 CEST by Quicken

A while ago now I came to the conclusion that game shops who heavily promote pre-ordering games (you know who you are!) are basically encouraging uneducated purchases. After all, how can you really judge the quality of a game based on previews and hype. Too many games fail on key features they were hyping up only a few weeks prior to release. Itís not like we get any special benefit out of being the first to own a game except maybe bragging rights. But who wants to brag about having a pre-order on DNF?

But I guess weíre all suckers for anticipation and canít resist the chance to try out that new game. While I can say I only ever put down a pre order once, to save all of $10 AUS, but I have to admit it was for C&C Renegade. At least I managed to hold off long enough on Unreal 2 to get it from the discount bin but now I feel I should have waited longer still. And why do we wander into a gaming store thinking "I need a new game" and walk out with pretty box with a title unheard of?

Sadly there is a mod Iím waiting ever so long for to come out and some have been foolish enough to fork over $25 US to pre-order it. 2 years now after the initial planned release date I wonder if theyíll even get their infiltration T-shirt and if the mod could have been released a lot earlier if it were not under pressure to get all the features in that they promised the paying customers.

What games have you pre-ordered? Have you ever tried getting a refund for a pre-order? What feature have you most looked forward to only to leave you let down? And what disappointments may come this year?

I preordered Soul Calibur 2, the last Zelda and that's about it.  Only games I'm sure I'll like.

But overall, I'd like to complain about the boringness of this topic, because it bothers everyone when I do.

Preordering is even worse than buying a game sight unseen. Only the stupidest fanbois do that, normal people probably stopped doing it around the time Tiberan Sun came out. I know I did.

I preorder.. then I change my mind about the preorder and move it to another game. It's like I've got a floating five dollar bill somewhere in Game Stop's system. I should ask for interest on it.

I've only ever pre-ordered Wind Waker and that's cause I knew I'd buy it anyway and if you pre-ordered you got Zelda64 and the Master Quests for free. I hadn't played Zelda 64 before so I figured why the hell not.

I kid cause I care.

I rarely preorder games. Vice City was the last game I pre-ordered if I recall correctly. Saying that, I know I'll pre-order DX2 and probably pre-order Doom 3. Other than those two titles, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that I want that badly.

On a semi-related note, I plan on trying the one-time purchase thing of Half-Life 2 via Steam. Sure, there are bound to be problems with it or whatever, but I am genuinely interested in how the service will plan out. Online delivery is going to happen sooner or later and someone has to take the first trying/difficult steps. Valve seems to be in a pretty good position to do this, and I figure what the hell I'll help 'em out and give it a try. Alot of people on other gaming boards seem to think Steam is going to eat their hardrive or something and i can't really figure out where all the paranoia is coming from.

In the market in which I live, there's really no point to pre-ordering.  The stores have the games I want, and if they don't, the store next door does.

I pre-ordered Virtua Tennis 2K2 for the Dreamcast and was happy about that. Otherwise, however, I don't pre-order, and the reason for that was recently brought home to me when Gabe Newell publicly talked about the different versions of Half Life 2 coming out. Now, anyone who pre-orders a game a year or more in advance is in need of some therapy, but the release date was supposed to be the end of this month, and only a few weeks before that Newell talked about the different versions they were thinking of coming out with. And I heard more than one person on a forum say, "well, I pre-ordered the game a week ago, so what version am I getting? Am I going to get screwed?"

My battlecry: "Zang! Who is that, running on the fields! It is Hellchick, hands clutching buzzsaw hand extensions! She roars mightily: 'I'm going to brutalize you harder than God thought possible!!!'"

FFX, I'm sad to say. Still, it was worth it for the 2 extra days I got to play it while no one else could! Uh...

It was about then that I realized preordering ranks about the same as buying a game guide at the same time as the game itself. Pointless and silly. Oh, and costs money.

The reason I didn't preorder Infiltration is because I stopped believing the game would come out on any sort of realistic schedule. I did my part in running RealMaps, wheee!

I'm still waiting. It should be the only decent realistic shooter available, and that free-weapon, true iron-sight aiming is just about the only one in existence.

I pre-ordered 3 games ever.  The first was Doom2 because I wanted it first.  When GT didn't come across and Compusa had it before I did, I was pissed.  I picked up a copy at CompUsa and canceled my check to GT (they still ended up sending me a copy).

The second game I pre-ordered was Max Payne.  The only reason I pre-ordered that was becuase I saw it for sale on the 3DR site for $40.  I knew that price wouldn't last for long and figured I was probably going to get it anyway so I took got the $10 discount.

The third pre-order was GTA:Vice City.  I knew I was going to like that and I wanted to make sure I had it on the day it came out.  Going forward I would only pre-order a game that I want to get on release day that has a good chance of being sold out.  Vice City fit both of those criteria so I pre-orered.  The reason I haven't pre-orderd DX2 is because I doubt the masses will be trekking to EB/BestBuy on release day to get it.  I honeslty can't see anyone bothering to pre-order a PC game.

While the anti-Steam backlash is somewhat overblown, I've been playing with the supposed "1.0" release and it is in fact, a rather buggy piece of crap IMO.  I'm rather shocked Valve thinks tying the HalfLife 2 release to this is a good idea... Looks like it needs another 6 months of development, at least.

...

I also preordered Wind Waker to get the goodie CD and that is the only game I've ever pre-ordered.

It really is.  You don't get the game any earlier than other people and odds are, especially if you're having it shipped, you'll get it LATER than people who drive to the store that day.

Yup, that's what did it for me.

I've never pre-ordered because I'm not enough of a raving fanboi to adjust me schedule such that I can go shopping one launch day anyway.   Since Tiberian Sun, I not only don't buy a game right away but actually do a little research once it's out.  The most recent games I've bought within the first week or two were Advance Wars 2 and WarioWare.  Both had received rave reviews from every site and person I checked with.

Are you being obtuse on purpose or...

The version out now is 2.86. The one that's been out for the last um, 1.8 years or so. The one I'm referring to is 2.9, which is quite, ah, different, and has been in development for the last 2 years. Or so. With 2 years development, it should be a quite different experience.

It isn't like a publisher is going to say 'Hey we sold out, sorry you bastards, better hit e-Bay!'. They'll just pump out more and laugh all the way to the bank.

Threadjack attempt

How could a company as generally savvy as Sony be making such a huge, obvious mistake?  Is the PSP a planned failure? Do they need a tax write-off?  Could they possibly have never heard of the Lynx or the GameGear?  Are they just so arrogant with the success of the PlayStation brand they think anything they releases will turn to gold?

I would preorder games a lot (BF:1942 Secret Weapons, for example; or HL2; or Doom3; or Athena Sword expansion for Raven Shield; or XIII; or The Titans AoM expansion), but we had to fight the turks for hundreds of years here and now live in poverty and removed from all technology and progress. We just barely have access to teh Intraweb and ATI cards - the latter mostly imported by war heroes who jumped in computers when our country was privatized and all commerce was being divided among mobsters.

Gameboy SP is about 10 hours with the light on, about 18 with it off.  Of course, it is virtually unusable without the light, so lets say 10 hours.  But when it comes to handheld devices, there's a huge difference between 5 hours (lets give them somewhat of a benefit of the doubt here) and 10 hours.  Also, judging by the mockups I've seen it just looks a bit too unweildy to be a Gameboy killer.

Also, three times the price for a Gameboy and 50 games in the country altogether (each costing around 1/5 of the average monthly income) here in Savagelands. So YF's threadjack does not brighten the gloom of the preorder discussion. Can you all not rather start bashing Scott Miller?
