The End of the Exclusive?
August 30th 2003, 23:18 CEST by JMCDaveL

So on Thursday pretty much every gaming site that hosts downloads banded together against Gamespy's exclusive on the Call of Duty demo. After thousands of sweating hamburger stained forum dwellers screamed "NO YUO~!!!" in unison, Activision has decided to release the demo to everyone... early at that. So, does this mean that anytime Gamespy gets special attention then the interweb militia will take up arms and cry until Gamespy has to share its toys again? Also, will the idiots who set nasty emails to Caryn over this die a horrible death involving knitting needles and a hummer?

on topic:

I think everything's been said. Exclusive demos could do Gamespy some good, but can only do a publisher harm. There are a few possible reasons for doing an exclusive: getting player demographics and cheap ads through Gamespy for example. I don't think that weighs up against the con, though.

The exclusive never happened, so the sites carried the demo.

Ok...  So the demo is pretty interesting.  I hope how short it is not a showing of the final game.   That was REALLY REALLY short.  Other than that, cool stuff.

I didn't think it was so short, for one level. I'm glad the game wasn't the usual shooter. Running around with a squad is an excellent idea (note: I never played any MoH games), and I was happy that at least 75% of my squad was still alive by the end of the level.

The demo didn't show off what I think is one of the best things about the game: you'll be playing campaigns from each of the Allied forces -- U.S., Russian, and British -- as it all moves to the showdown in Berlin.

I just worried that it only took about 10 minutes to complete and their are only 24 missions, right?  That's pretty fast if this mission was indicitive of the final product.  That is all.

Honestly, I hate to be pulling out the "this game is short" card, but I was just wondering.  I did like how you were the star of the action, only makes sense.

On a side note: I got 2nd place in a SC2 competition today at my local EB!  I was beat down by a kid who looked about 13.  Yay me!  :)  I had a lot of fun though.

um, you didnt have 7 guys alive at the end

or rather, you probably didnt have the -same- 7 guys alive at the end, the paratroops dropping in 'reinforce' your units when you lose a guy, check the names out and youll see they change.

being knocked on my ass and sound going 'off' with the shimmering screen effect sold me on this game, that and being able to lean around cover and pop off a few shots, using iron sights / proning etc and AI that was helpful and believable.

to reiterate, check it out.

Hehe blues banned it... LOL

Right after my own heart.

After discussions with Activision, the following websites will not be carrying the Call of Duty playable demo, even after its exclusivity is over. This is due to Activision's decision to not accede to the reasonable request of making the demo freely available to all game enthusiasts at the same time.

3D Gamers
AusGamers
Blue's News
EdgeFiles (Callofduty.org)
FileFront

The above-listed websites hope to show Activision that the enthusiast industry is strongly opposed to the idea of exclusive demo releases.

Feedback from our users shows that gamers hate to be forced through a single point of congestion if they want a demo right away. While these websites are actually competitors, this competition provides the freedom of choice that enthusiasts want by offering the widest possible distribution of any demo (a sample intended to interest as many gamers as possible in the full product, after all) rather than the most restricted one.

Therefore, something this disrespectful of the industry as a whole has inspired all of these websites to stand together in this open letter.

Deals like this hurt the industry much more than they could possibly enhance a single relationship, and we ask for your support in sending out this message.

Right on! I hope they *never* carry it.

I guess this is more than a brown stain on Activision's purdy pink panties. Fucking stupid publishers; they've collectively ruined everything that was ever any good about the game community.

Look at Gamespy. It stepped in and ruined Planetquake. Poor Bastard was corrupted and didn't see what was coming! I see him as a victim...

Planetquake was the best back in the old days. Now it's just a shitty regurgitation napkin of marketspaek vommit and toadstool dirt.

Played the demo, it was only okay. It might be that I've had enough of WWII action but the game realy didn't excite me that much. The squad concept was cool I guess but it was pretty slow plodding along with them. Not to mention that whenever my squad would square off against a bunch of Germans it felt like I was playing Duck Hunt. My general feeling was that the game played t o o s l o w....

Pretty good graphics, some pretty neat squad tactics, but pretty average gameplay. I'm sure plenty of people will have fun with this game but I think I'm done with WWII-based shooters for awhile.

Does anyone here know of any programs that will allow you to download the contents of a website? There are a few webcomics whose archives I'd like to DL, and would rather do it in one fell swoop than one at a time.

She was my kind of girl, in every way. Bore a very strong resemblance to a girl i saw a few times that was incompatible. Except with better makeup, flawless face, shorter blacker hair, and thinner.

I am fairly sure she noticed me, as I was staring at her for about a hour and a half before losing track of her whereabouts. She seemed very inviting but was with friends, and you know how that is. Unfortunely, she smoked, a lot. Oh well.

I wasn't like staring staring, just glancing, repeatedly, couldn't help it. Damn. I tried to smile when our eyes met but I was just like, frozen, and sort of grinned, ok it sounds creepy. She was checking me out from time to time though, honest.

Also, Americans are pretty ok from what I can tell, there was this big fucking jerk at the front throwing his weight around and forcing people to crowd surf, he tried that shit on me but i didn't want to bust my sunglasses or lose the shit that was in the pockets, so i faked injury. I suspect he may have been jafd.

There were some really nice people we met after who tried to help us find a bus stop (the usual bus stop was shut down for some fucking Seattle-is-stupid reason) but were incompetent and ended up hooking us up with a ride right to my car.

Just FYI, the boycott didn't happen specifically because there was nothing to boycott. We decided to make it freely available to everyone, and early to boot, and so all the sites gleefully chose to carry it because that was the goal here.

I liked the demo.  It was long enough, how much of a FPS do you need to see before you can decide if you like thegraphics, gameplay, etc?   I loved being able to look down the sights of my gun.

My favorite part, and i don't know if it scripted or not is when you are trying to take a group of buildings about halfway through.  Your squad waits for you to run ahead, so I ran to the left to try to get to the building.  Someone yells cover fire or something and they all fire to the right at once so the enemy isn't watching me.  I toss a grenade in the window and we wipe everyone out.  It felt like it was straight out of a movie.   This has been added to my wish list with HL2 and Deus Ex 2
