OpenCrap
August 21st 2003, 03:22 CEST by Gabe

The sudden resurgence of interest in OpenCrap has me thinking about resuming work on it. I figure this would be about the best place to talk about what features you'd like to see added. Doesn't mean I'll add them, of course, but I'm open to discussion. High on my priority list is submission bin support. Beyond that I haven't given it much thought.

Teen Dies After Prized Fish Stuck in Throat

Aug 19, 10:52 am ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian teenager died of suffocation after a fish he caught jumped out of his hands and lodged in his throat, newspapers reported on Tuesday.
Lim Vanthan, 17, and his family were planting rice at the weekend near their home on the outskirts of the impoverished Southeast Asian nation's capital, when they decided to go for a swim.

During his dip, Lim Vanthan caught a prized eight-inch fish, called kantrob in Cambodian, with his hands.

But the high school student's excitement was short-lived when his catch squirmed out of his hands and jumped into his mouth, where it became stuck because of barbs running down its back.

He died of suffocation before he could receive treatment at a local clinic, the newspapers said.

"This is an accident, but it shows we must all be careful," concluded the Khmer-language Rasmei Kampuchea (Light of Cambodia) newspaper. "Accidents can happen at any time."

I've only been using it for a matter of hours, but here's a few quickies :

- Buttons in the "Post" window for applying formatting to the selected text (bold, italic, etc)
- When I click the "X" button, it would be neat if OC would minimize to the task tray instead of closing.  Not exactly standard, I know, but I've seen other apps do this and it works well.  I find that I'm closing OC a lot when I really just wanted to minimize it (to actually close the app, you could have a "File | Exit" menu option - or maybe an option on a menu when you right click the icon in the task tray).

RSS feed reading in a "smart" way, as to not be banned from slashdot et al.

You know it might be nice to have a kind of RSS feed exchange or some place where we could post our own RSS feeds from our sites so that other planetcrappers could link up.

Searching in posts. Bolding/highlighting of your own posts and bolding/highlighting (configurable colors would be dandy) of posts that are replies to your posts. Craig managed this with Crapspy by forcing the quote function to embed a hidden original post identifier within the html of every post. A simpler way would be to simply highlight/bold posts that contain your nickname or a user configurable string.

Likewise being able to configure usernames as ignorable might be nice for some people on the board. Generally speaking the most important feature for me appears to be letting Opencrap color different posts based on user definable criteria such as username or strings in the body of the post.

Oh also. The quote button should NOT quote the entire post. Instead it should only quote the selected text of the post. If no text is selected THEN quote the entire post. This one should be easy to implement.

Finally if you want to go nuts with feature-itis you can add new options to confirm before post and confirm before exit with modal yes-no dialogs. That should satisfy the compulsive X-clickers in the audience.

Software developers who create confirmation dialog boxes for trivial operations should be shot.

Asking to save a file when I quit is one thing. Asking me if I really wanted to quit is annoying and unnecessary.

Sorry, as someone who does occasional interface design, that kind of thing irks the hell out of me.

Absolutely.  Every interface book I've ever read states clearly that popup dialog boxes with OK buttons on them or YES/NO buttons are in the users way.  Constant confirmations put the user into an automated state where they just click OK or YES by reflex.  Then, if something serious happens and you need to tell them something important, it gets lost in the noise of dialogs you're throwing at them.

The OK button dialogs are the worst.  It's the equivalent of the program proudly announcing what it's done and asking the user for a cookie (clicking the OK button).

The Bat! actually does this in a few spots, but they aren't used very often.  One example is when you hit the "Send" button but you don't have anything in the send folder.  It proudly beeps and displays an OK dialog:

"Nothing to send!"

And?  Just beep and be done with it.  I don't need to be told that every fucking time.  Especially since your brilliant toolbar design has the "check for new email" and "send" buttons right beside each other.  So every time I slip and hit the wrong one, I get rewarded with a dipshit dialog.

Blah.

Warren, you forget that most basic software has to be designed for stupid people.

And sometimes not even so stupid. A friend of mine is (for example) very click-unsavvy, and is invariably tempted to go for the delete button ah, prematurely, at the Toast news. I, of course, did not provide a confirmation dialogue while designing because I hate the things, and well...it's obvious that it might have been handy.

On the other hand, a proper design (I ended up making the delete BRIGHT RED and moved it far to the other side of the screen) can do wonders. But I think designers will often go the easy way (popup confirmation) rather than think about logical design. Meh.

Umm, from what I have seen of the 'crap so far, I don't think we're in any danger of that.

Open Source CMS makes me sad.

Heh. Smack the developers around. The simple answer is that if there is nothing to send, the "Send" button should be disabled. Obviously they know that since they hit you with a dialog box when you hit the button. One simple change, and they'd have an elegant solution to the problem, and you walk away happy that they didn't offend you.

If it could bring the look to the OC interface, I would be sold.

I thought I posted this before... but I'm not sure. Anyway here is my css to make Opencrap look more like Planetcrap:

<style type="text/css">
/* CORE CONTROLS */
body {
background-color:#EEEEEE;
color:#666666;
font-size:11px;
font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;
}
td {
font-size:11px;
font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;
}
a:link { color:#6164AD; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; }
a:visited { color:#6164AD; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; }
a:hover { color:#FFFFFF; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; background-color:#6164AD; }
img {
border-width:1px;
border-color:#000000;
border-style:solid;
}

/* OBJECTS */

td.infoAuthorIcon { background-color:#F3F3F3; text-align:center; }

div.infoNumbers {
border-width:1px;
border-color:#000000;
border-style:solid;
border-bottom-width:0px;
background-color:#6164AD;
font-size:10px;
padding:5px;
color:#FFFFFF;
}

div.infoAuthor {
border-width:1px;
border-color:#000000;
border-style:solid;
background-color:#DDDDDD;
padding:5px;
font-weight:bold;
vertical-align:top;
}

div.postBody {
padding-left:5px;
padding-right:5px;
margin-bottom:20px;
}

div.quote {
margin-left:20px;
margin-right:20px;
border-width:1px;
border-style:solid;
border-color:#DDDDDD;
background-color:#CCCCCC;
padding:5px;
margin-bottom:10px;
color:#444444;
}

div.signature {
border-width:1px;
border-color:#000000;
border-style:solid;
background-color:#DDDDDD;
padding:5px;
font-size:10px;
}

div.clear { clear:both; }

</style>

Just click the Options button, then Format and replace the default <style> section with this one.

Oddly, I find myself posting more on the usenet than PC lately... and I've given up on Qt3 altogether. I'm regressing into 1995! All the same, I tried OC once and it didn't really grab me.

I would like for the "server down" dialog box(es) to go away. No new messages is no new messages. Maybe some GUI widget that says "Refreshes since our last server accident: 5,089".

Also,
  postText = StripQuoteBlocksFromPost(postText);
  postText = StripWhitespaceFromPost(postText);
  if (ThisPostJustSaysWhat(postText))
