Defining Political Correctness:

Most articles attribute the origins of PC to the United States during the 80's timeframe, and most major encyclopedia's define PC as a liberal approach to a desired social interaction. I'll quote just two as an example:

"conforming or adhering to what is regarded as orthodox liberal opinion on matters of sexuality, race, etc.: usually used disparagingly to connote dogmatism, excessive sensitivity to minority causes, etc." -Webster's New World College

"Conforming to a prevailing body of liberal opinion, esp. in avoiding language, behaviour, etc., which might conceivably be regarded as discriminatory or pejorative to racial or cultural minorities or as reflecting implicit assumptions." -Oxford Encyclopeadia English

The last sentence of my introductory paragraph is just one example of how things are developing the world over where PC is concerned. The quoted portion was taken as an excerpt from a recent story in the UK. While reading this story I came across the fact that the UK Police have instituted what is known as a new "Diversity" Unit. And believe it or not, their sole function is to enforce correct thinking. In doing so, they want Londoners to keep tabs on each other for ‘discriminatory’ abuse directed towards minority groups. It didnt take long to illustrate just how screwed up this type of policy is....

In November of last year, during a speech at a fair in Glouchester, TV personality Robin Page was quoted as saying "If there is a black, vegetarian, muslim, asylum-seeking, one-legged, lesbian truck driver present, then you may be offended at what I am going to say, as I want the same rights that you have got already". His remarks were in response to the proposed ban on certain forms of hunting in the UK, and he felt that people who live in the country should have the same right to protect their own culture as minorities have to protect theirs.

I agree that racist jokes and remarks are uncalled for, but jokes about Political Correctness itself are apparently high Treason in the UK, as the local police sargent asked that he'd "like to hear from anyone who was upset by the commentary" after receiving complaints. Page was subsequently arrested and detained in a jail cell that was reportedly covered with dried human feces before he was interviewed.

Remember the Bill Maher controversy, where he stated on national TV that "We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away"? He said this just seven days after 9/11, and later had to endure a long and drawn out apology in an attempt to clarify his remarks. If he had said this just one day before 9/11, people wouldnt have even batted an eyelid. Bill also made a statement in the opening minutes of the show that was never mentioned during the public feeding frenzy. He said: "Political correctness itself is something we can no longer afford. Feelings are gonna get hurt so that actual people won't, and that will be a good thing." Imagine that.

Unless you are the antagonistic/sardonic type, everyone usually tries to avoid upsetting a particular individual or group with something that is said. And imho, it's a basic part of human nature. It all revolves around something we learned as children: The Golden Rule. The problem with PC, is when something that wasnt considered offensive yesterday, suddenly becomes offensive tomorrow. Once this occurs, a sort of mob mentality begins to develope around the issue, resulting in some form of a cultural showdown where entire cultures stand risk of being decimated. The tyranical aspects of PC and its subtle attacks on freedom of speech and expression are troublesome, and the trend of requiring panegyric responses to cultural issues is even more troubling. It seems as if telling the truth, and telling the -right- truth, are quickly becoming bastardized to the point where autonomous opinions are outright treasonous.

It's no secret that the world is changing, and things that were able to be said yesterday, could become taboo tomorrow. Does everyone want freedom of speech and expression? Sure, we all do, but it can wait a while, we should kill all of the terrorists and save the worlds animals first.

PC is a joke.  And it will only get worse as time goes on unless changes are made to how people cope with other people.

The problem is that people aren't learning how to not let others decide how they feel.  This, imho, should be something taught at an early age.  I know it's taken me forever to work it out and I'm still not great at it.  I let certain peoples opinions of me affect me...  the rest of the world can kiss my butt.

Which is exactly what most people don't do.  They can't take a joke, they can't just let things flow off them, etc.  This is failing...  I don't know whose, but a failing all the same.

For some reason, this whole topic feels nebulous as to whether the acronym PC stands for Political Correctness or PlanetCrap. I think most of the comments work for both.

Can the pig skin have USDA Approved stamped on it with a tiny American flag?  Might they confuse the pig skin-wrapped babies for footballs and develop a team capable of defeating the Patriots with Islamic atomic blitz power?

Political Correctness is another tiresome attempt to control the supply and application of power, by one group over another. In this case it's based on a reworked fallacy of appeal to authority. The minority is granted power over the majority because they're the minority, not because their position is necessarily the correct one. It encourages the two worst traits of corporate behaviour, stagnation and tyranney. However, calling open season on minorities isn't the answer either, as it would lead to the same effect, albeit in the opposite direction. As neither extreme is optimal, I think it's clear only one solution is possible... redefine society!

I wanted to move to South Africa until the collapse of aparteid blew that one. Personally, I think it was a bloody good idea. Problem is, the PC brigade didn't want it to succeed, and led a campaign to collapse the regime when it no longer served their purpose in the Cold War.

Since South Africa's collapse, everyone is worse of than they were before, with rampant AIDS, crime, and poverty, ravaging the country. Without help from the former white ruling and professional classes, the country would've imploded years ago, just like the other basket case post-colonial African countries.

If you look at the litter of evidence, it's a pretty healthy bet everyone would be better off if black slavery was brought back into fashion. The white man would be happy as everything would run tickety-boo, and the black man would be happy as they'd be off skid row. Everyone's a winner.

Bill Maher was attacked primarily by conservatives for his post 9-11 comments.

Liberals in no way have the lock on supressing free speech in the service of political dogma, the most relentless attacks on the first amendment, artistic expression, and satire over the past 50 years have demonstrably come from the right, not the left.

I'm annoyed by the mutation, again driven by the right, of "PC" to mean any liberal strategy in speech or conduct related social evolution.

And I'm annoyed by people who hide behind charges of PCness to justify or defend continuing to behave in an appalling, rude manner.  "What?  no, my joke wasn't crude, racist bullshit, you're just politically correct."  "What?  No, I'm not being a sleazy asshole to every underling in a skirt I can get my paws on, you're just being politically correct."  "What?  No, I don't have to act any different than my granpappy did back when those other people knew thier place.  You're just being politically correct."
