SWG: A New Hope
November 11th 2003, 19:06 CET by m0nty

Jedis have started appearing in Star Wars Galaxies. Film at 11.

Lucasarts sent a message out to SWG users informing them that up to two dozen Jedi would be appearing over the past weekend.

The first Jedi to announce themselves was Monika T'Sarn, who looks somewhat like a dusky gully dwarf. Groupies started mobbing the diminutive Jedi, with one apparently asking them to bless their TNT card judging from that pic. Another Jedi was unlocked over on the Bloodfin server, looking somewhat like Legolas with a blow-wave mullet.

Developments are happening quickly. Instructions for how to become a Jedi are now online, complete with spawn campz0rring co-ordinates and walkthroughs for quest puzzles. The first Jedi eBay auction has already been run and won, with the price ending up at US$900. In a predictable development, bounty hunters have already started getting missions to kill the newly-formed Jedi.

By the time this topic gets voted in, lots of other stuff will have happened, so I'm sure linkage will be provided where needed. I don't think I need to ask questions on this one - let the zingage commence!

It sounds like it is coming down to a process, if you follow the steps you get a force slot, or is it more random than I'm reading it to be?

I thinkt he process is this:

Game jerks you around, makes you master a bunch of skills you don't care about.
If you do this enough, they let you get a jedi slot.

So basically it boils down to pointless time wasting and nothing else.  Surprise!

So no Jedi for casual players? Woo.  Hoo.  That sounds like fun to me!  I'd rather get Jedi Academy and get my light saber right away, which I did in fact.

Erm...you call those "directions" on how to become a Jedi?

Without saying anything about it directly, I'll just ask...didn't the first person to become a Jedi state they didn't do the quest mentioned in that "directions" link?

I also find it curious that suddenly a whole bunch of Jedi's starts to pop up in a very short time span while it took 6 months to just get to the first one. So either they recently added the code for it or the devs just granted the force slot manually to some suitable people.

And wasn't the Jedi code supposed to be present from the start?

Permadeath is still there, but the FC slot remains open.  So yes, you'd have to restart a Jedi character, but not worry about re-unlocking the slot.

Again, this isn't a requirement to become a Jedi.  From the link to the player who made the first Jedi:

She did none of the Hermit quests.

Ah, I guess I was misinformed then. One faq seemed to present it like the Hermit was required to "change" the character in some way...

Still, if the hermit thing isn't required, there seem to be an awful lot of walking around to different random spawnpoints to get those "badges" and stuff. So my point stands.

The instructions for becoming a Jedi were actually patched in by the devs because they were impatient. This is the relevant quote from the recent IGN interview:

IGNPC: The game launched almost six months ago. Is player progression towards the Jedi track following your timetable? When did you expect players would start to unlock these secrets?

Haden Blackman: We knew that it would take at least three months for the first players to unlock their Force Sensitive character slots, and that would in turn lead to a rush of speculation and revelations about the "secrets" to attaining Jedi status. However, when we reviewed the players' progress at the three-month mark, we found that they were progressing towards Jedi more slowly that we would have liked. To help guide players in the right directions, we added Jedi and Sith Holocrons to the game, which give you some guidance by revealing one of the requirements for your character.

Holocrons are glowing blue cubes dropped by high level mobs. They consist of an instruction as to which class you should master to further your progression to becoming a Jedi. There are at least 17 eBay auctions selling Holocrons, like this one. There's even an auction for a \"jedi capable\" character... for which you have to level up to Master in the chef class! Basically, the SWG players were too stupid to work out Jedi unlocking for themselves, so the devs had to tell them how to do it.

I think I have to vote for "They made the path too obscure".

In all my time as a gamer, my experience has been that game developers judge that X task will take Y amount of time to be completed/attained by the player.  And then, of course, some dedicated player/group of hackers/idiot savant/psychopath manages X task in half the time.  They estimated three months minimum, but no one in the playerbase got it by the six month mark.  Master chef?  Wha?

What do you actually get for becoming a Jedi?  Is it all about the robe wearing bonuses and boasting rights or is there more to it?

I really must try one of these MMORPGs someday, I tried UO for all of a few hours and gave up since the training didn't actually train you.

Presumably, one can train in the Jedi arts.

I'm just curious to see how this is going to work out.  The players that have unlocked the Force Sensitive slot have announced who they are.  Will not nearly every player be going after them to get the bounty rewards?  Or is the bounty hunter job exclusive to the first person to accept it?  I recall the original intention was to keep the Jedi identities secretive so that the player won't be hunted down by any and every player on the server.

I was also under the impression that the Jedi abilities were going to be randomly given to players as a matter of chance.  Its sad enough people have to follow templates to get the most out of the game, but then have a system where people can potentially follow a walkthrough to be a Jedi is ricockulous.

Jedis get light sabres, which cut like a knife through butter. According to this thread you can PvP with a light sabre and be impervious to damage, as long as you don't use Force powers. Oh, and you get Force powers. Plus, you get mobbed like you're the Messiah.

Strangely enough he only filed the trademark in 2000 covering such wonderful "Lightsaber" items as: beachballs, plush toys and hobby craft kits for making perfume. But Fox registered the word in '77 for "Toy Sword". So I guess it's offical Fox spelling.

Light saber: Heh, thats why they actually translated the lightsabres in the original Star Wars (tm) to something like : light (as in not-heavy) sabre (as the weapon we all remember from Prince of Persia). Ultimately meaning a normal sabre thats pretty light to handle.

But then again subtitles in Norway have, and probably will, suck for a long time.

You could also argue that it's more of a rapier type dealie than a sabre anyway, not to mention that combat with a weightless, infinitely sharp blade wouldn't involve big slow swings.  You'd think it wasn't real or something.

Please put that.. that.. hahaha!  Okay, you can take out the tiny hammer if you want.

While we're picking nits here, the combat style Lucas went with is much more similar to a sabre style than a rapier one. I think you're right about the big slow swings though, if you could make a weightless infinitely sharp blade, a swifter combat style would probably be adopted instead of the swinging and slashing that they choose for the movies.

I kid cause I care.
