Making BF1942 more like Tribes may seem like a good idea on the surface, but I suspect it isn't.

I dunno, I kind of like the concept in using some of those more experimental vehicles, but the Rocketeer thingy leaves me quite mixed.

Some of the vehicles (Sturmtiger!!!) seem like they'd be really fun, but quite a few of them make me scratch my head... I mean the flying wing thing never even saw combat use.

Most of those new vehicles were prototypes and never saw action either they tended to kill their test pilots or the war was almost over before the vehicles could be launched into mass production.

From the article in #0:
There will be seven new weapons including one-shot kill knives.

So how fast do you think this will get nerfed?

It would be really funny to watch players reactions if the designers decided to implement this into the game.

Actually, if there was a chance of your rocket pack going out of control, flying you all over the sky trailing smoke until you smashed into the hillside, I'd be all over that.

It could be a lot of fun to strap on a jet pack and turn yourself into a guided missile, as long as you actually destroy what you crash into.

2003-04-05 02:07:06
From the the sound the the ign preview it sounds like the rocket-pack will have a rather short flight time (real one's top out at around 15 seconds), and the fact it does have fuel will prevent a lot of bunny-hopping with it. All in all it's likely end up getting used as a one person jeep and to get scouts into position.

Considering the number of fucktards who can't fly a prop-plane in normal Battlefield 1942, DICE wouldn't have to add anything special for the prototype planes and jet packs...

I've been playing Desert Combat 0.30 alpha. The Iraqi Special Ops has the skill to blow himself up. Heh.

It's a fun game although I find it difficult to shoot down other planes in the F-18 as the jets move way too fast for my bullets to hit them (even with a good lead).

I've greatly enjoyed BF1942 and it's expansion so I'm going to just give them the benefit of the doubt.

If it blows I'll just play on non-secretweapons servers, in fact just give me a dedicated NVidia server playing Battle of the Buldge and I'll be a happy man.

mmm Rocket pack in BF1942. ok you gotta admit Bf1942 may not be the most correct WWII game out there. dont get me wrong. Im very happy they are adding new infantry weapons. But rocketpacks guided missles and many expirimental fighter jets ugh. To be completed honest I think this expack has features of a user made mod.

Does anyone else think that this outdoor larger-scale combat stuff w/ vehicles (and stuff) constitutes a potentially huge fps sub-genre?  First it started with Starsiege: Tribes, then came Tribes 2, Halo, BF1942, and in the future Unreal Warfare and Halo 2...

DesertCombat is much love, the Blackhawk is a joy to fly but the c47 is a complete pig in the air, mind you once you get the hang of orbitting a site counter clockwise you can raise holy hell with a full crew on board.

*avoids pimping it over much*

But I can see how rocketpacks could make SOME maps fun in vanilla BF1942, itd make snipers/scouts lives an awful lot easier, plus getting an engineer from a spawn to the frontlines to get some repairs going on would be useful.

Much love?

Desert Combat is shades of all the 'ultra' mods in Tribes 1.  Total overkill.  Total unbalance.  Total newb.

Of course, this is only a minor technicality, as even when "properly elected" into office, a politician has as much chance of not having gotten there via corrupt means as Dubya has of spelling racecar backwards.  --UncleJeet

I found Desert Combat obnoxious.  Many of the perks of certain classes, such as the Engineer, were totally ruined.  The Engineer class was designed specifically for range combat and the ability to use explosives.  In DC, he gets the automatic rifle that makes him terrible for ranged combat, but really tough up close, which essentially removes the key weakness.

Yup, they should have left the key balances alone and just stuck to making new graphics, but instead they decided to fuck everything up, and totally ruined any hope their mod had in the process.

The "Support" class has a shotgun for close-up combat and a portable mortar for ranged combat. From what I have experienced with DesertCombat 0.3n so far there's little reason NOT to be a vehicle since there are often enough vehicles for everyone (transport vechicles such as HMMVs, M2 Bradleys and Black Hawks can transport at least four other players other than the driver/pilot).

gee, maybe you think this is why its called an =alpha=, not even a beta release and theyre focusing on getting working content in there before doing all the balancing detail.

at the very least, its not a counter strike clone ;)

Except retard drivers / pilots who don't even wait to load up on soldiers before taking off.  Its easier to just start hoofing it, rather than expect someone to pick you up.

gee, maybe you think this is why its called an =alpha=, not even a beta release and theyre focusing on getting working content in there before doing all the balancing detail.

Which is fine.  But that doesn't mean a person has to accept the current game balances.  If people didn't express their displeasure of them, they wouldn't get fixed, now would they?

Thinking about this, I've never understood the use of the terms alpha and beta for mods.  Aren't all releases -- regardless of version considered 'official releases', and essentially nullifying the use of those terms?

Im not claiming its balanced at all, just that it IS a work in progress.  To borrow back to Counter Strike, the first few releases were horribly all over the place, both teams were pretty much identical, the only way to tell them apart was one side had sleeves. Not easy to be sure of your target on a dark map, some of the maps were horribly one sided (oops, still are), some of the guns were just whore weapons (the early mp5 then the P90). Theres still arguments and flamefests over the balance now. But youre absolutely right the balance isnt even remotely there in Desert Combat, heres hoping theyll work on that in the next couple of releases.Til then Ill have a laugh hoofing around on the ars-technica servers getting my ass kicked and demonstrating the fine art of hop n pop in the apache/hind and playing taxi driver in the blackhawk.
