3D Enviroments of Real Locations.
March 21st 2003, 23:29 CET by gregdowning

I just finished a project http://www.gregdowning.com/pimp/; I was showing it to people at GDC. It's a technique I developed for doing photogrammetry of real locations using a small number of omni-directional panoramas. Unlike using just realiviz's image modeler, panoramas solve several workflow, coverage, and asset management issues, speeding up the whole process.

It allows me to very rapidly create a 3d environment that are physically accurate (plus or minus 2 feet over 100 yards) and are photo-real with minimal hardware requirements.

This was created for head mounted VR hardware project but I am interested in providing this as a service to gaming companies. Obviously this is not applicable to the large majority of games in the fantasy genre, but could be useful for sports, racing, movie sets or other games based on real locations. Whatever you think about other aspects of sony's "the Getaway", it has some very impressive enviroments created with image based techniques. I am interested hearing what people think.

I thought the work looked pretty interesting.

So did I. More and more, as content-creation for games becomes increasibly time-consuming, people are going to need and want tools of this type. Particularly since shaving every last little poly off of something by hand is becoming less important than just being able to get the content out the door.

I would like to play a game where every building didn't look the same. Although I agree the topic is somewhat spammish, I was glad to check it out. Having said that, I *DID* vote no.

I would like to play a game where every building didn't look the same.

The problem here is typically memory and not content creation time, the same buildings mean you can get away with only having it once in memory, everything being unique means storing unique model and texture data.

Don't look at me, I voted for Kodos.

I know that. I'm saying it would be nice not to have to see that all the time.

Looks good, but for various reasons I would refute the statement that this is particularly usable in realtime games today.

By similiar technology I assume you mean "they took pictures of stuff and mapped it to models".  Nothing much new about that.  I'm quite sure in The Getaway that some poor motherfucker spent months doing nothing but cutting up textures from those pictures and meticulously perspective-correcting them so they can be remapped all over the place.  Not quite as time saving as one would like..though the results might be cool.

Heh, back before I came to work for GameSpy, people I knew always used to think I was crazy for rejecting job offers in the game industry for texture work. I mean... it's the *games* industry, man! Just take whatever you can get!

But I *knew* that most of them would end up being that kind of position. I can't imagine a faster way to make someone hate games than for them to work as a low-level art grunt for a year or two.

Maybe I just didn't want it bad enough. But it didn't make sense to leave a pretty comfy web design job just to get my foot in a door, if it was going to make me hate my life until I could bounce somewhere better.

Just about any game today that wants to look realistic uses a shitload of photo source for its texturing.

Texture artists who tell you they can "paint better textures" than one can get by using photo source are either lying, or are unfamiliar with the speed at which textures need to be produced. =)

-chris
(again: that only applies to games that want to look realistic. Games like World of Warcraft use hand-painted textures extensively, and look fantastic)

Yeah that was a little bit confusing, especially since Max Payne is clearly CONSTIPATED and Taco Bell does pretty much the complete opposite...at least the couple of times I have eaten it anyway.

I meant, didn't they actually go to New York and take pictures of places they intended to re-create in the game. I really grabbed the wrong quote for what I was intending to say, sorry.

When Duke Nukem Forever was announced:

The PS1 was the dominate console.

The original Grand Theft Auto (nevermind GTA or GTA3) wasn't yet released.

The Sega Dreamcast was still 3 years away from being released in the US.

Most bettin' men would have picked Rendition to be the 3D graphics king on PCs.  Not 3dfx.  Certainly not NVidia or ATI.

is SU in the playoffs?

Not that I went to SU, but I lived in Syracuse for nearly a decade, so they're sort of my defacto college team.

Not that I'm changing my icon. Last time Bailey yelled at me and made me cry, because he was confused by my insanely high 1 icon per 2000 posts ratio. :P
