I hope they port Tux Racer to it.

this is basically the same thing as the X-Box: a solid spec PC in a Much Nicer Case&tm;
I wonder what hardware they're gonna use though, the XBox can survive today with a 733mhz CPU because the games are especially adapted for it. That's its main strength.

The Phantom will most likely not have that luxury, in fact it's more likely that it'll be nothing more than an almost-standard PC, since they claim you can play every PC game on it.

So what will the specs be then? If they want users to be able to play the latest PC games, will they be able to make the specs high but the price low? could they cut a deal with hardware vendors like Microsoft did?

In other words: how are they gonna make this machine any interesting for the console gamer, compared to the X-Box, when they're not half as resourceful as Microsoft?

They aren't.  Even Microsoft, with their massive piles of brains, has succeeded only in creating a hole which they are trying to fill with money.

I thought I answered this already... stupidity. The console market is way too big and there's too much money at stake for some little guy to come in and do anything. Christ there doesn't even seem to be room for 3 all of which are backed by giant billion dollar companies. Not to mention the fact that I can't see any PC gamers trading in their desktops, mouse and keyboard for a box and a contol pad just so they can play the exact same games on a probably lower spec machine. Unless they think they can steal console gamers away from MS, Sony and Nintendo, to play what would have to be low quality PC games. This thing is doomed to fail, it's a poor idea and trying to get into an already crowded market.

What about keeping a PC, rather than "trading", and playing some different games on machines that you know will run the games?

Gunpo1nt,

I agree, but I'm pretty sure they're still losing money on it.  And MS has done pretty much everything right.  The hardware is solid, the graphics are currently top-of-the-heap, and they're still seeing it as a loss-leader for XBox2.  I highly doubt these Phantom people can afford to do that.

2003-01-24 21:30:04
If they sold this thing for like $200 it might be an interesting PVR/TV-based media player/nice box for playing emulators on, etc.  But there's no way they'll be selling it for $200 because:

1) Windows license.
2) Since it is an 'open' platform, no ability to lose money on hardware sales and make it back on software licensing fees.

I'd say this is just plain old stupidity.  Indrema rehashed but with a Windows bent.  Nobody told the guy who is running this thing that it isn't 1997 anymore.  Nobody is going to give him millions of dollars to piss away.

2000/XP is better than Win9x in every way.

Shadarr, I wouldn't say MS has done everything right. They took a different approach from what the other console companies have, MS seems to be wooing developpers more than they are the consumers. I think this is more of a long term strategy for them, but I'm not sure it's going to work out as well as they hope. People don't neccessarily stick with a company when the next generation of consoles comes out, the market can turn very quickly as it did when Sony took over the lead from Nintendo. Also no matter how nice the system is to develop for if a company can't expect sales few games will be made for it. MS also seems to miss the point that it's not the power of your console that matters, it's what games there are available for it. MS failed to lock up exclusive titles (I don't mean exclusive for 3 months I mean permanently) they also failed to get many japanese developpers making titles for it, and failed to get any amount of hardware sales in japan, which isn't the biggest market, but perhaps the most influential. They also have very few high quality titles, and seem to be a little at odds with EA the largest publisher in north america. They haven't been flawless, but they are doing better than I thought also.

Do you not think that MS success with consoles will come with the second or third generation. Why wouldn't they be happy to make a loss (bolstereed substantially by their, ahem, minor success in other areas) when it means they will have brand recognition on par with Sony, in only a generation or two?

I don't think brand recognition is an issue. I think MS had all the brand recognition it needed at the begining, I really don't think there's any more for them to gain. I also think brand recognition is the reason MS has been able to come in and do as well as they have, that and throwing fistfuls of cash around. Let's not forget Sony came in and swept both Nintendo and Sega aside in a single generation, MS hasn't had nearly the same impact. Also the console market (probably the whole electronics market) is extremely fickle, success with one generation doesn't guarantee success with the next. MS is use to doing business their way, they get support from developpers and shoe horn they way into the market they want, the problem here is they have no leverage like they do in the PC software/os market. Also every new console generation is whole new game, you have to sell a new product to the consumers again and there isn't that much you can do to leverage your old market share. MS has had a poor record of trying to enter markets where they can't use their OS or other software packages as leverage.

Actually, in some markets the Xbox is turning a profit...

Of course it's in the same division as MSN, so the division losses are quite high.

If they want to play the current PC games, they need both good specs, and a good OS...
But wait, the only OS that plays all current PC games is windows, so i don't think they will be able to solve that (license/interface wise).  They could try running linux, but that has been done without succes.
So unless it will be an iPhantom running OSX, i doubt they can pull it off OS'wise.

I don't care if it fails or not. It's another flagstone on the path to downloadable retail gaming content, and that's good.

It looks to me like they're working to make the "Lamborghini console." Well, fair enough. Lamborghini doesn't exactly sell a million automobiles a year, but they've still got their niche of success.

If it really worked the way they want to claim it does - super-powerful, download every game, evar, without having to think about it - sure, if I had money to burn, I'd get one. Who wouldn't? Poor people, that's who.

There's already something like this out, but for consoles. The company is based in Korea, the system is called the Gamepark.

It has a good selection of its own games plus emulation capabilities for gameboy, GB Color, SNES, Sega, etc...all through rewriteable rom cartridges.

Been out for a while now, too.

Did anyone else watch Man versus Beast last night?  I got tired of it before the hour was up, but just the idea of pitting an elephant against a gaggle of midgets seems so obvious it's amazing it hasn't happened before.

Also, when he's not saying his catch-phrase Michael Buffer actually has a below-average voice for broadcasting.  That surprised me.

likely illegal too.

Well the people who make the GP32 just give out developer tools, they don't make or release emulators.  People have taken these tools and used them to port SNES9x and Spectrum emulators and such to the GP32 using the devkit, but the makers of the GP32 have nothing to do with this directly.

Despite the 'open' nature of the GP32 there seems to be more a lot more homebrew development on GBAs using reverse engineered libraries and gnu-tools with special memory flashcard carts.  Probably because it is cooler to develop things that can be used on systems that people actually own/use outside of Korea.

That's possible. I'm kindof repeating myself. It's a standard, predefined theme. Consistency is key. Scott Miller knows that too. After almost 3 years I have not changed one bit. Today people read the name Joker on PC and they know exactly what to expect. It's kindof like a PC brand.

And perhaps it's a sign. It could mean something.

Just wondering though, what were you doing so far back in the archives?

Disregarding marketing, how many consoles are out there, and all that other stuff the fact remains that if you looked at the press release and think that this company has any hope of succeeding then you are an idiot or perhaps a venture capitalist.

Just because Microsoft used standard parts for their console does not mean you can slap together a computer in a fugly case and call it "a new games console".

Problem:  I switched Video cards so that I could install Windows XP.  Now I'd like to switch back but whenever I do that it freezes up again at the boot screen.  ATI Radeon 9700 btw...  so my question, is there any way I can install the drivers before I manually put the card back in?  I've tried downloading them from the site, doing it from the CD, etc, but since the card isn't in there at the time it won't install.  Any suggestions?

Nooo, not really. Are you fully uninstalling the old video card drivers first?

Also, do you have a Creative sound card? If so, pull it, try the install, and if that works put the sound card back in and see if it is now ok.
