But they aren't really Westwood anymore...
January 5th 2003, 09:42 CET by Morn

Remember C&C Generals? Here you'll find preview screenshots released some time last year. This is what the game appears to look like today. Bad screenshots, or another severe case of Westwooditis?

Discuss.

Update: apparently it's the former. Stop whining!

EA Pacific is working on Generals. I was under the impression that Westwood = EA Pacific.

Westwood aren't making Generals.

EA Pacific are making Generals. They aren't related to Westwood (although some of their staff used to be at Westwood)

Westwood are working on Tiberian Twilight (the next "true" C&C game, using the same engine as Generals (which is a modified version of the W3D engine used in Renegade))

Will this game sport the same amazing AI Westwood claims all their games have?

I wouldn't vote yes for Charles' topic.  It is merely a completely unscientific web-poll unleashed on an insanely slanted demographic.  It is meaningless.

Beating Halo, DNF and Galaxies?  Well, Halo is old news now.  Things might be different if it hadn't been released on the XBOX eons ago, or we were talking about Halo 2 with a simultanous PC/XBOX release.  We aren't, though.

DNF?  No point in voting for that since there is no indication it will be out anytime in the near future.  Kind of a wasted vote for something you're "looking forward to in 2003".  Maybe it comes out in 2003, maybe it doesn't, but there's no stronger indication it will come out this year than there was the past 3 years.

Deus Ex 2's lead over Galaxies is statistically insigificant (the whole poll is pretty statistically insignificant, but..) and exists only because this is a FPS-monkey site and while Deus Ex is a bit different than your average FPS, it is a lot more of an FPS than Galaxies.

In any case, the list of games to vote for makes me weep.  The only ones I'm looking forward to are Sim City 4, and Doom3, and in the case of Doom3 I'm only looking forward to it out of technical curiosity.  I can't imagine I'd actually play through the full game.  The PC games market is nearly dead to me.  I still play games often, but over the past 3 years I've become increasingly a console gamer first and a PC gamer second.  It is now to the point of about 95% console games 5% PC games, in terms of time spent, and it still seems to be decreasing.

While I generally agree with your point, when developers (like 3DR for example) cry about this sort of thing it makes me laugh because it is the industry's own marketing, hype and astroturfing machines that brought about the trends they now whine about.  This whole fanboy/fansite subculture wouldn't exist if the industry hadn't have created it by trying to use it as a prerelease buzz marketing tool...And yet they bitch & moan like little girls when it gets out of their control and runs rampant.

People expect Halo on the PC to by any good? Has anyone played Nightfire on the PC? Have they even patched it yet? I took my copy back it was so horrendously buggy.

Lets also remember the Gearbox were supposed to be working on Counter Strike: Condition Zero, and now aren't.

DNF just won wireds vapourware #1 (congratulations again 3DRealms) so they're hardly going to win any anticipated release poll.

Doesn't leave a lot of competition for a game everyone can play (MMORPGs are not something more people want to play).
