Christmas stocking stuffers
December 14th 2002, 23:32 CET by HiredGoons

If you're reading this, then most likely for you enjoy the true meaning of Christmas (read: get the gift you want and not a sweater) -- you have to give Santa a serious hint as to your heart's desire by emailing the actual link describing what you want to Santa/significant other/ or other Sikh-based substitute for Saint Nick.

Or perhaps you cut out the middle man entirely and purchase your own geek hardware.  Regardless of how it happens, I know you've been thinking about the latest and greatest development to hit our consumer culture.

What cool techno toys are grabbing the minds and wallets of the PC masses?

Wireless speakers? Or just inflatable ones?

External DVD burner?  A USB organizer for your CDs?  A head mounted display?  God help us, a Segway?  Or just an iPod?

Or if none of those float your boat, then what?

I work in a helldesk ("Thank you for calling the Road Runner Nat'l Helldesk...").  These things have been all over the place.  They're just plain too cool for management to complain about.

I want a Handspring Treo so I can finally lose my aging Palm Pilot and consolidate my phone and PDA into one device. I won't get one, though, because they're still $500. Way too rich for my blood. The Treo is still a little bigger than these smartphones, which I think I'd rather have, but no one supports those right now.

Caryn,

You should have a look at the SonyEricsson p800 which is out soon, however keep away from the Microsoft SPV and the XDA (Pocket PC phone/PDAs), I've been testing them and theres way too many bugs in them.

Palms own tungsten shows a lot of promise, but again huge amounts of cash for something that's first generation of its kind and will be out of date in less than a year.

Thanks for that link Hulka, I added the Alton Brown book to my list.  If anyone has a list post it, I like ideas (not just for me, but for things to get other people too).

Things I want?  Cell phone Accesories, Minority Report, Lotr:FotR exteneded edition, Cowboy Bebop, AotC, new flatware, glasses and plates for the new (hopefully soon) home, Pro Race Driver (PS2), slippers, clothes and a couple misc. items.

Oh yeah, I've been following that still since the topic we had in march called 'when the levy breaks' on the matter.

Since that time, they were supposed to have already had some meetings, and I was going to follow it up for everyone, but they pushed the meeting back to Jan 23, 2003.  I'll fill us all in when the time comes.

Fun stuff really, since they introduced this Apple has come out with a 20Gb iPod, which from the Apple store in Canada costs $800.00 right now.

With a tariff of $21.00 per Gb on non-removable storage, we can tack on another $420.00 to the price.

Anyone in for a 1200.00 +15% tax which would be a $1380.00 iPod?

Laughable. I don't see how they can keep doing this except for the fact that they are.

Canadians tend to be a bunch of passive sheeples though.

The problem with the levy though, is that who is responsible for collecting it? And how much of it is being distributed to the artists? Also, who does this organization report to?

1. I'm not sure.

2. Not one fucking penny.

Official statement from my employer (London Drugs):
A law passed by the Federal Government in 1997 allows the money to be collected by the recording industry. It's supposed to compensate artists and copyright holders for private copying. To date, none of the money has been distributed.

I generally don't care for techno gadgets. I've got no use for handheld PCs, or any feature on a cell phone other than "store numbers" and "make phonecalls. There's like nothing on thinkgeek.com that interests me.

But I am a *complete* sucker for mid-to-high-end A/V equipment. 53-inch Flatscreen HDTVs, Gigantic Receivers, Progressive Scan 5-disc DVD players, and so forth.

It seems to me that minus the whiteboy wrapping/beatbox, that conversation could be pretty naturally transplanted into a relevant scenario concerning the new Zelda game. It's nice to know that gamers' attitudes towards assessing games hasn't changed much.

My only problem with Bezzy is, truly and honestly, about one third of his longer, passionate posts make no sense to me.  I don't necessarily agree or disagree, I just literally can't parse them.  - Hugin

The perennial knock against Gore is that he's stiff, humorless, overly intellectual, etc.  So appearing on SNL (if he did well) would help him with that image as he eases into running again.

He lost the electoral vote, which is all that really matters in our voting system.

IMO both Al Gore and Bob Dole both seem to be affable guys, each with a good sense of humor, but in each case their campaign managers fucked up, and this side of them didn't come to light with the American public until AFTER their respective presidential runs.

If Gore runs again, I'm not so sure he'll lose a second time, especially if Trent Lott keeps helping out the Democrats by saying really stupid things.  The funniest thing about Trent Lott is obviously he's really pissed off minorities and other sane folk but as a bonus his 4 or so apologies also are pissing off the far-right psycho segregationists, so he's squeezed on both sides.

And now he's hurting his party by saying that if they toss him out as Majority Leader he'll resign and his Democrat governor will pick his replacement which will mean the senate goes back to a 50/50 split.  He wants to be the segregationist albatross around the Republican party's neck.  And the longer he's in the spotlight the greater the chance that the media will start picking up other stories involving racism, like Ashcroft and the CCC.

It won't have any impact on DNF.  Nothing really does.
