The Xbox Live Thread.
November 18th 2002, 09:56 CET by Charles

So I've been fiddling with the Xbox Live stuff since I got my Live beta last week, and it seems pretty solid so far.  Lag is nonexistant, game matching works like a dream, and thankfully, the voice communication only comes over the headset.  I say thankfully because it seems that no one knows what to actually use voice communication for in Moto GP.  So you get a random assortment of people laughing like retards, making nonsensical comments (probably half of a conversation with someone not actually in the game), not saying anything at all, or even better, fools making motorcycle noises in to the mic.  Of course, with some cleverly planned griefing (ie:  turning your bike around mid race and racing backwards), you can usually coerce some colorful comments out of the people on the other end.  (Greifing seems to be pretty rare so far, I'm the only one I've seen doing it.  I'd imagine that'll change a lot when the retail kits hit.)

Voice communication might possibly end up being the most overrated aspect of Xbox Live (not particulary to anyone's surprise I'd imagine).  Some of the voice filters scramble the voices so bad you can't understand what they are saying.  And they can end up choppy sometimes (though it doesn't seem to happen too often), however, when they get choppy, the game still doesn't appear to lag, so chances are the voice transfer is low priority to everything else.  And MotoGP allows you to just turn off the voice communication from inside the menu, so I'd imagine most games would have that option.

Of course, for voice communication to truly be handy, you'd need a game geared more towards it.  Something team based.  I'm sure it's far more handy in Unreal Championship, which should hit stores soon.  I haven't tried any multiplayer with Mechassault yet (no games available, probably have to wait till the servers are flagged as live), but I'm hoping it has some team oriented gameplay.

Anyway, who's in?

I am thinking the same, the Gamecube's affordability and the allure of it's games make me want it more than the others. I'm still pressuring friends to buy PS2.

jafd the only thing I'd suggest other than Eddie or his unstable brother George are buying it in Canada or the tried and true "smash, grab, and run away".

PS2 outsells Xbox and GC by a margin of 10 to 1.

Having said that, the key for success of anything to do with a console is support from hit games. Halo 2 with voice support might be the only reason to buy an Xbox, and a flimsy one at that.

Xbox, Xbox, Xbox.  Such a wonderful piece of hardware.  Such an utter failure on the part of Microsoft to get enough good games released for it.

GameCube on the other hand, has a number of great games already, a stellar line-up still to come, and as mentioned you can pick them up for real cheap. A no-brainer purchase for a console game player.

In any case, it saddens me that both have done so poorly compared to the PS2, dooming console gamers to a few more years of Games That Look Like Ass, because the PS2 hardware sucks and sucked even at time of release (no, fillrate isn't everything, Sony).  I've still yet to see a PS2 game that honestly looks unarguably better than the best looking Dreamcast games.

But I got one for the nintendo-exclusives, metroid, mario, zelda...
I'm buying a xbox soon for all the cross-platform titles, just to get the juicy version.
The only PS2 game I'm even remotely interrested in is ICO, and I can play that at work whenever I want. *shrug*

Do you still play games on your Atari 2600 regularly?  Didn't think so.  Sure, gameplay is king and all that, but to ignore that greater technology allows for the potential of greater game experiences is just plain stupid.

I actually bought a PS2 a looong time ago when it just came out. It's a no-brainer if you enjoy fighting games (SF3, TTT/Tekken4, VF4, DOA2.) I also enjoy platformers and for that I would get a GC just for Nintendo's own Mario/Luigi-related stuff. Along with the Disney platformers that are usually a lot of fun on a piece of Nintendo hardware.

So perhaps this online gaming stuff will be the reason to get an XBox. Let's hope so for MS' sake, since there hasn't been any other.

Well, I'm going to chime in with the XBox fanboy side here since no-one seems to be even discussing the topic.

I have both a GameCube and an XBox. Between the two, I currently have 8 games for my XBox and 1 game for my GameCube. All the talk of 'no games for xbox' and 'great games for gamecube' frankly puzzles me. I had at one time or another for the 'cube: Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Mario, StarFox (still have), Beach Spikers, Super Smash Brothers: Melee, and Lost Kingdoms. Let's go down the list.

Eternal Darkness: Not nearly as good as you've been led to believe. There's a reason it's only sold 150,000 or so (which for a title of it's pedigree is a certifiable flop)

Resident Evil: Great, great game. I've beaten it about 5 times though, so it was finally time to take it back. Not a knock on the GC tho, great game.

Mario: I didn't like it. I know some do. Most agree it's not the crown of mario games though.

Starfox Adventures: I haven't beaten it and I do like it. Many don't. Go figure.

Beach Spikers: Good fun, but I couldn't get anyone to play it with me. Single player is *very* weak.

Super Smash Brothers: Melee: I hated it. My wife disliked it. My friends I play games with wouldn't play it. My kid loved it. It got traded in.

Lost Kingdoms: Fun, but not for long. Pretty crappy gfx too.

So, out of that group, basically two games I think are worth playing if I were to do it all over. (RE and Starfox). Metroid out today/tomorrow and I'll be buying. I expect I'll love it. There are no other games out that interest me.

On to the XBox (omg XBox is huge lol roofles)

I currently have: Halo, Dead or Alive 3, Deathrow, Shenmue 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Phantom Crash, SSX tricky. Games I've traded in: too many to count seriously, but includes: Gunvalkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, Project Gotham Racing, Rallisport Challenge, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Outlaw Golf, Oddworld, etc. etc.

Out of the stuff I've traded in, I loved:
Gunvalkyrie, JSRF, Buffy, Oddworld. I beat them all before trading them in.

Of the stuff I currently have:
Halo: will never be traded in. Best single player FPS I've played and I've played them all. All you people who don't like seeing a level more than once had best avoid Metroid Prime, since that's a primary mechanism in that game too. Deal.

Dead or Alive 3: It's popular to hate it. Doesn't stop it from being great fun. Whenever people stop over it's the game that gets played.

Deathrow: Except when we're playing Deathrow. It is way more fun than it has any business being. Single player, multiplayer, this game has it all. If it were Live enabled it'd be the best game available on any system.

Shenmue 2: I like it so far, but I've been too busy with

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance: Another game that's fun to bash, but if you don't like MGS2 you don't like life. Most who hate it have never even played it.

Phantom Crash: Mixed Bag (mixed bag!). I tend to agree with penny arcade's assessment. Fun to pick up and play for a bit though. Will be traded eventually.

SSX Tricky: Available on all the systems, and I'd recommend picking it up for sure. It's pure, distilled, fun. At least for the first 30 hours or so. I'll never trade it in.

As for the stuff I've traded in: I like racing games, but not enough to actually keep them. I should learn my lesson and rent. After beating a single player game I tend to trade it in instead of keeping it.

Anyhow, back to the GC/XBox thing. Games on the XBox look and sound better. Period. It's not the reason I prefer my box though. There are *far* more games I like on the box than there are on the GC. That's fact. Some may disagree. However, it's really easy to dismiss a lot of the less-hyped XBox games without having any experience with them. I've played a lot of the sleepers like Buffy, Gunvalkyrie, and Deathrow. All three of those games are straight up great. It's just that since they haven't been marketed by the Rockstar Death Star they aren't even considered.

Shit talking dickhead sucker fool.

I have a PS2.   I haven't used it in months.  It sits on my floor collecting dust.  Sure, I plan on giving the new Contra a rent.  Vice City looks cool enough, but I expect it will come out on the PC shortly.  As a result I plan on ebaying it, and buying a GameCube within the next six months.

Okay, so last night I'm sitting with my two female housemates watching Smallville with them (they like it, *shrug*), waiting for Angel that comes on later.  And they show a commercial for Metroid Prime, which is the first commercial for the thing I've seen.  And it looks sooooooo good.  And I'm yelling at the screen "Ahhhh, Samus!  Ahhh Metroid!  Ahhhhhfuck I don't want to buy a gamecube for just one game but it looks soooogooood!!!"

At which point of course my two housemates are looking at me like I'm a loon.  So I explain Metroid and Samus and all that, and try to convey to them old school gaming goodness and..they still look at me like I'm a loon.  Well, okay.

So later, my male housemate gets home, so it's all four of us, watching Charmed and then Angel (yes yes, we watch a lot of crappy shows, usually one of us is a huge fan of something and the rest watch out of politeness or to be social).  And they show another Metroid ad.  And completely unbidden, he jerks forward in the couch and starts pointing and yelling at the screen. "Holy shit there's a new Metroid game!  It looks awesome, what does it run on jesus we have to get that Samus looks great do we even have a Gamecube, shit we don't I don't care we have to get that Metroiiiiid!!!"

At which point my one female housemate turns to the other and goes "You know, I never really bought into the whole idea of the different genders as completely different species until right now."

Yeah, we're dorks.  But it was pretty funny.

It's funny. I was a hardcore PC gamer since the days of Doom and have recently become an exclusive console gamer. I have not played a game on my PC for 6 months or more. I had to watch my nephew for a week last spring and became totally hooked on the PS2. Now I have a PS2 and have been playing all the classic PSX games and some of the current PS2 titles. The lack of graphics horsepower doesn't bother me at all. I am even enjoying the platformers like Rayman etc. and I thought I never would.

I think I became burnt on the emphasis of PC games toward on-line play and the community that it spawned. If I wanted a community experience I can set up a LAN game or go bowling. The emphasis of recent PC titles seem to have shifted focus away from solid single play experience, the very reason I became intrigued with PC gaming in the first place.

I first saw that Metroid commercial at a movie theatre, Hugin.  Playing before the previews in front of 8 Mile.  While it was nice to see a Metroid commercial at all, I think the commercial kind of sucked.  It lacked any kind of thrill or 'oh wowness' other than what you might get just by being a Metroid fan and seeing Samus in a commercial.

Oh well.  Doesn't matter, I'll be buying the game soon enough.

The funniest thing about Boxing Day is that the deals aren't even that great, unless you're blowing some serious bank on a new home entertainment system or the whatnot. Years ago, there used to be all sorts of crazy deals that'd just show up, like quality discmans for $10 a pop, but these days it's mostly just an excuse for stores to drag out old stock and cut prices marginally to move inventory.

Yup - I was in computers, and generally we blew out shitty old inventory that languished in the channel over that selling season.  The Compaqs of the world fire-sale their prices to the big-box stores.  The prices are pretty good, but generally there is a good reason that those models went unsold in the first place.  Back in the day it was shitters with 4MB of system RAM dedicated to video.  Those were just ass.

AST's were usually our biggest sellers on Boxing Day.  That and Acer's.  Eugh.  Acer.

I feel youre pain .... working retail over christmas in the Uk chain Currys/Dixons/Pc World, shifted about oh ... 30 grands worth of pcs in the week up to christmas. Unfortunately most of them were Packard Bells, I felt guilty abdout selling these shitboxes to people in that last week. Those who annoyed me go the Packard Bells, those who approached me in a halfway human fashion got directed to a friend of mine who custom built pcs and would give them an evenings training.

No I didnt get any kickbacks, but I quit that store on Christmas Eve with a smile, a laugh and merry little dance.

They had about 55% returns on those pcs the day after boxing day, and not one ounce of remorse did I have.

Well, since no one else picked up the gauntlet, i figured i would.

Halo: is the reason i bought my xbox, after playing it for 15 minutes at a demo kiosk in toys r' us.  it's also one of the most bland FPS games i've ever played.  the 'net is lousy with people complaining about how repetitive this game is, so i'll just leave it at that.  the first two or three levels were fun, i'll admit, and it had great MP.

Dead or Alive 3: bought it, beat it with every charachter, and took it back the next day.  complete and total ass.  and graphics were seriously overhyped.

Deathrow: never played it, looks neat.

Shenmue 2: a port of a 2 year old dreamcast game.  hoooray.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance: a port of a one year old PS2 game that everyone already owns.  yippee fucking doo-da.  and if anyone starts talking about how it's different because it has VR missions, i'll start making empty threats, bailey style.

Phantom Crash: never so much as heard of this game.

SSX Tricky: played it for 5 minutes at E3.  made me want a new 1080 game all that much more.

also, JSRF:  i actually really enjoyed this game, although i'm sure a lot of people wouldn't.

as far as games looking and sounding better on the xbox:  i'll give you better sounding.  the xbox just has better sound hardware, hands down.  but looking?  i haven't played an xbox game that looks better than Metroid Prime or Resident Evil.  I guess YMMV.

and if you like the games on the xbox more, more power to ya i guess.  but please, for the love of god, don't tell people gunvalkyrie is good.  someone might accidentally buy it.
