Yuppy And The Alien
November 12th 2002, 16:56 CET by deadlock

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has been out a few days now and I'm sure a few of you have picked it up - I know I have. I'd like to know your opinions on it.

How does it rate against GTA3? Was the move to give the central character a name and a voice a good one? Pulled off any wild tricks on a motorbike? Just how annoying are the load times, anyway? Any thoughts at all that you have, post 'em in this thread.

GTA:VC kicks mucho @ss IMHO. Don't expect any new gameplay over GTA3, it's not there. If you enjoyed GTA3 a lot you will defiently LOVE VC.

GTA:VC is more of the same, and that is exactly what I wanted from the sequel.  It seems to be a little buggier than GTA3, but nothing that is a show stopper.  Motorcycles are a great addition but the boats are overated and a bitch to control.

The load times are getting annoying.  I'm not bothered by long initial load because it only happens once, but there is some significant pausing during and after some of the mission briefing.

I like the DTS sound, but for God's sake don't aks me each time I load if I want that set.  It must be a protection scheme for stupid people.

This one is a hell of a lot more fun to just go apeshit in the game, as well. The army is after you and you're on a fucking crotch-rocket? WIN!

The thing I noticed the most is that they accurately represnted the different riding styles of each cycle.  In a sharp turn look at how Tommy handles the bikes.  I was very impressed with that.

And on a bike you can dodge bullets.  And shoot straight ahead at targets.  Fun stuff.

It is definately more buggy than the original.  I've already had it crash twice on me plus I found a spot where if you fall into it, you can't get out.  And it wasn't just a little dip, I was surrounded by walls twice my height in all directions.  Luckily there were cops around and I was able to get them to start shooting at me (through a wall of course).

Other than that I really like it.  The motorcycles are fun.  I like how you can damage cars with melee weapons.  The cops seem even less observant in VC than they were in LC, which I guess is a good thing.  Unless you punch a empty police car.  You can steal it, drive it into a wall, flip it and make it explode, but if you punch a police car, even if there's no cops with a square mile, you get a wanted level.

I'm having a lot of fun with it.  The bikes are totally bad ass.  And this has already been said, but it's worth repeating ... crime sprees on bikes are the shit.  I find the dirt bikes to be the best for it.  They're fast enough to get away on, yet maneuverable enough to easily dodge roadblocks and such.  About the only way to lose on them is to fall off (which is pretty easy if you're not careful).

I got in the police helicopter in the second island and was disappointed to find out that their is a height limit to it.  It could barely fly on top of the sports arena, the landing skids were scraping the roof.  Needless to say the roofs of the tallest buildings are off limits (for now? I havenít tried flying any other craft).

The map is a great addition.  Trying to get to paramedic mission 12 in GTA3 was part skill and part luck, hoping to take the right route.  With the map in VC you can at least pause the game and figure out how you're going to approach the situation.  Still takes a hell of a long time to get to level 12 though, but never getting winded is worth it.

Has anyone figured out what the hell the hidden packages are?

I think that VC is bigger that Liberty, but driving around sometimes it doesn't feel like it.  There are more alley ways to hide on foot and the roof tops are far more accessible.  I like that the street design seems more logical than Liberty.  Some of the street design in LC made no sense, not that I was following the rules of the road mind you, but the general flow and feel makes it feel more real.

Well, as I said in the topic, I like it. It's not a huge improvement over GTA3, but that's probably forgiveable given the relatively short amount of time that they've gotten the thing out in. The bikes are fantastic; I was a bit unsure whether or not Rockstar would be able to implement them convincingly, but they have done it quite well. One thing that bothers me about the bikes is that it's far too easy for the cops to pull you off one and once they do, that's it - busted. I guess it's realistic though so I'll just have to get used to it :) Speaking of 'busted' I love the way you hear the lawyer berating the cops before you're 'set free'. Nice touch.

The voice-acting is pretty cool overall and it gives the game a different feel to GTA3. It's as if giving the central character a name and a voice with which to quip somehow makes the game feel less amoral. Not that I'd any problems with GTA3's moral ambiguity :P

Other things... I love the way the city seems a little more 'autonomous' - things can happen without you being directly involved, like you'll sometimes see someone attacking a cop or being chased by one. The only time I ever saw anything like this happen in GTA3 was when you were doing a taxi mission and you brought a yardie into the yakuza area or a triad into the mafia area.

I think my favourite little discovery so far has been that sometimes there's a passenger in the cars that you 'jack and you don't kick them out if you enter on the driver's side. There's nothing like smashing the fuck out of a car while the passenger screams and wails!

Why are we discussing this, hasn't it been covered in hijacks and IRC?

Aiming is very easy on the PS2 version. I don't see why you'd want to wait for the PC version for that reason alone.

I am offended at the contraction of GTA:VC.  VC is a known contraction of VietCong, and within the context of the game "GTA", would make the association of "killing" with the contraction of "VietCong".

I demand that all copies of GTA: VC are pulled and all title prints and box art are changed to "Computersim City", or *"CC".

*Provided CC is not a contraction for any other ethnic group.

Try it when you're in a van, out of control and heading towards the water.  Very useful then.  Or if your car is on fire, and you need to get out.  You now don't need to stop.

Also, you can do the same on a bike.  I've jumped off of a bike, for the express purpose of stealing a car that I was alongside, and I didn't have to worry about stopping.

OK, good points.  I was used to just holding down the "exit" button in GTA and the car would stop and I'd get out automatically.  Now I try that and I go flying out of the vehicle and tumble down the road.  Gotta learn to use the brakes is all.

I heard a rumor that GTA4 was going to be massively multiplayer or some hokey crap like that. If it wasn't subscription based it'd be insanely cool, otherwise, bad idea. Maybe though, just maybe it'd be the exact kind of title to profit from that kind of a marketing scheme because of it's broad appeal. Now instead of kids killing themselves over losing their level 80 characters in EverQuest they'll be doing it for the downfall of their gigantic virtual crime regime! Haha, I can see it now. I hear you can bail while you car is in mid jump. That sounds awesome, especially if it's the intro to a big gun fight.

I hope it comes to the PC, but from what I've heard, the concensus at Rock Star is "no plans to port".

I wouldn't blame them for wanting to start on a new game - maybe they want GTA3's graphics and general presentation plus an exterpolation of the the more intriguing game dynamics of GTA2. Conjecture.

My only problem with Bezzy is, truly and honestly, about one third of his longer, passionate posts make no sense to me.  I don't necessarily agree or disagree, I just literally can't parse them.  - Hugin

Right. I thought there was a subtle difference. I thought Exterpolation was taking some information and running on with it... predicting. I thought Extrapolation was simply summarising data, and making conclusions from it. I'm just saying that my ignorance was almost justified.
