BMX XXX Revisited... or is it?
November 6th 2002, 20:00 CET by Charles

Acclaimed has announced the release date for the PS2 version of BMX XXX.  Except it isn't just an announcement of the release date.  Here's the first paragraph (emphasis by me):

GLEN COVE, N.Y.--Nov. 4, 2002--The official countdown for the launch of this year's most talked about video games has begun, as AKA Acclaim, a division of Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ.SC: AKLM), today announced that its eagerly anticipated release, BMX XXX, will launch on November 15 for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Only this version of the game has been edited to eliminate the topless nudity.

So this whole thing leads me to wonder:  Is Acclaim caving to the pressure they themselves created?  Or was this entire thing planned from the start?  Claim to have topless nudity (thus instantly selling an extra amount of copies, to all the little boys who think 'hey! boobies!'), then when the shit hits the fan, just casually take it out?

Of course, the press release is only for the PS2 version, but I doubt they'll only cut the PS2 version, since the PS2 version is arguably the one that will sell best.   Another question, is will the mainstream media give as much attention to this change as they did to the original controversy?  My guess would be that they wouldn't, since it isn't as good of a news story. This whole thing could end up as a huge clusterfuck for Acclaim in the end.  Potential consumers hear "Our game has boobies," because it's on every mainstream news site and TV show because of the controversy, and decide to buy it.  Acclaim quietly pulls out the nudity so they can actually sell the game at Walmart et al, and when Joe Consumer picks up the game on November 15th, and realizes there is no boobies, he'll probably feel ripped off.  Maybe even go so far as to return it?  I doubt that, but it's still a possibility.

Either way, Acclaim probably wins in the end.  But the real question:  Is George Broussard ("I'm personally going to buy and support this game beacuse I think it's good for our industry.  Diversity and choice is always good.") still going to buy his copy?

Oh, and Metroid Fusion is a fucking awesome game.

The machine owes you nothing.

And anyway, maybe the machine just likes Catherine Bell.

Did anyone else find this wording strange?  It implies that non-topless nudity will be left in.  Perhaps they should rename the game "Beaver MX".

A Mercury Research report, released this week, found that in the third quarter of 2002 Nvidia's market share rose to 58 percent, from 56 percent the previous quarter. ATI lost market share, shrinking from 36 percent in the second quarter to 33 percent in the third, despite selling the highest-performing graphics chip.

Whoops, looks like having the fastest (and most expensive) chip on the block isn't worth all that much when the economy is as slow as it currently is.  Not to mention ATI's going to have to make the painful jump to 0.13 micron itself or suffer quite a bit in the future... and while they are knee deep in that, Nvidia will have its shit together again, riding high on the GeForce brand name.

Maybe ATI can turn things around by ordering up a couple billion more impressions of the green goo web ad...

I heard a rumor that the NV30 won't be carrying a GeForce name.  Will be interesting to see what kind of strange name they come up with next.

I've heard back and forth rumors on that.  At first I had heard it won't be a 'GeForce' because it is a significant advance over the previous cards, then I've heard it will be the GF5 because they think the GeForce brand has become too valuable to toss away at this point...  GeForce, nForce, FxForce(??).

Ah well, guess we'll find out for sure soon enough.

I remember hearing that they would be coming up with a new name for the GeForce 3, and again for the 4, so I am sceptical about the 5.

ATI's problem is that although they may have the best graphics chip out there, this only appeals to the most hard-core of FPS gamers.  Strategy gamers like me don't need to shell out $400 for a graphics card, nor do the legions of Sims players or non-gamers.  Meanwhile Nvidia makes a wide range of solid cards with good drivers.  And a good card with crappy drivers that cause incompatibilities with various hardware and software combinations will piss off a lot more people than a solid card with solid drivers that doesn't get as many frames at full detail.

Chucky, what the hell is that icon?

It's the cover to Ohgr's "welt" album.  Ohgr is Ogre (Skinny Puppy) and Mark Walk (produced some shit, including the first Ruby record).  I was never into SP much, but Welt is an amazingly good record.

From what I've read companies like ATI and Nvidia make most of their money on cards $150-$250.  I think they higher end cards are just to get free publicity from magazine and sites like Ars, they don't actually expect them to sell millions.

I am trying to catch up to Ergo's Dvd collection.

And as far as skinny puppy goes, Cevin Key is amazing, and Ogre needs to not sing.

Anyone heard or seen much about this Arx Fatalis game? I thought it was originally a remake of Ultima Underworld or something, but now it just seems to be similarly themed?

They've got revolutionary Tresspasser Arm/B&W Gesture spellcasting technology! You know what that means! Doomed to failure! DOOOOOMED, I TELLS YE!!! As well, it's from Jowood apparently, that doesn't help much either.

Lemme know how it is, Ergo. I'm just DLing the demo (no, really, the demo that the company endorsed) and I'm curious as to the gameplay. Looks sorta Morrowind-y, and that can be a significant turn-off.

The trailer was really poorly done, as well. Whoever chose that font needs to be shot.

I'm tired of all fantasy games being based on the Tolkein/D&D mythos even when they aren't using the D&D rules.  Is it really that hard to have a game without elves?  Ironically, Planescape: Torment is an example of the kind of game I want more of, and it's based on a (former) TSR property.

Just finished up Age of Mythology, and I'm going to strongly recommend this title to people who don't qualify as RTS enthusiasts, but still enjoy the genre. A very simple, straightforward system of gameplay, with an actual solid, interesting story and some humor as well. Quite refreshing. Regrettably the whole "reset tech tree every map" cliche is in there, and resource management can be a real annoyance, but overall, the game made it quite tolerable.

However, you'd best set aside some time to play this game, because it's pretty frickin' huge.

So just got back from seeing starwars at the IMAX, and for anyone who is interested, here is the list of cuts that I noticed (not necessarily in the proper order):

-early bit where Bail Organa speaks
-Obiwan in the library
-Obiwan, Yoda, and Mace Windu walking along the corridor talking
-Anakin saying "not like here, everything is soft, and smooth"
-entire field scene
-Anakin dreaming
-beginning and end of Obiwan's message to coruscant from Kamino ("scramble code 4 to coruscant" and "I'll report back when I have him")
-Boba Fett firing the ship weapons at Obiwan (and most cuts to him in the cockpit)
-introduction to Ben
-part of the chase through the asteroids
-beginning and end of Anakin's temper tantrum after killing the sand people.
-Dooku entering chamber where Obiwan is being held. (scene starts in the middle of the conversation)
-Threepio telling Artoo that he's "programmed to understand humans"
-Threepio hanging on to the front of the flying bot in the factory then getting tossed off
-The first bit with the molten whatever pouring in to a container (the one that makes you think it'll be in Padme's)
-The council convincing Jar Jar to vote emergency powers for Palpatine

Phew.  I think that's all of them.  I'll post again if I remember any I forgot.

"There is a huge difference between disliking somebody - maybe even disliking them a lot - and actually shooting them, strangling them, dragging them through the fields and setting their house on fire. It was a difference which kept the vast majority of the population alive from day to day."
