WAR BAD!
October 9th 2002, 06:41 CEST by LesJarvis

I saw this quote in Newsweek and thought it was interesting.

That's about it.

"Naturally, the common people don't want war...But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascicst dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship...All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.  It works the same in any country."

-Hermann Goring, Adolf Hitler's second in command.

Bad is a misused word in that it is an abstract thought that cannot be understood or defined in black and white terms, despite the mass media and nation of morons' attempt to do so, due to the very nature of abstract thinking/thought. War cannot be bad anymore than the weather can be bad, it is subjective. When a tornado cames and wipes out a neighborhood we dont accuse the tornado of bad ethics or lacking proper up bringing. Of course a tornado isnt a sentient life form, but neither is war. Orwell said those in england opposeing the war against germany were actually supporters of hitler, as without resisting germany would allow them to acheive there goals. War is a desciptive noun, a word used to define battles between nations, a tragedy that will never stop. Not some meaningless hippie goth tragedy that inspires bad poetry but real human suffering. Ugly tragedy. Nothing defines mankind better than war. Without it empires would never fall, giveing way to something better, without it tyrical governments would never be falled. An army is no worse than a single man with a gun, only more powerful, its to what means you use the power.

However the worlds only remaining major power slaughtering a nation of barley armed vigilantes, who are only attempting to wrestle power away from said world power is bad.

I found it more interesting for the fact that here is a representative of a nation/political party/ideology/what have you that was obviously very skilled at manipulating it's constituents.  I don't believe that GWB is analagous Hitler or some such nonsense, but the parallels between the Nazi invasion of Poland and the current Iraq/America situation are somewhat striking.

Now someone hijack already.

From the BBC story:
However, Quaoar is not an official name - at least not yet. In a few months, the International Astronomical Union, astronomy's governing body, will vote on it.

I can see two possible positive outcomes for this. One, we all stack the IAU and vote in the name Planet Crap instead of Quaoar. Two, the IAU sells off naming rights to the highest bidder, and the new planetoid is called Turok.

I don't believe that GWB is analagous Hitler

The analogies that are there lie mostly in their foreign politics. As a person and for internal politics they are quite different. I mean what has GWB done for the US itself so far? Unlike Hitler who pushed back the rampant unemployment, upgraded the infrastructure and improved the nations healthcare.
Oh yeah, Bush put import taxes on foreign steel. Which brings me to another difference. Hitler took great care not to piss anyone off. He convinced both the UK and France that he wasn't such a bad guy untill the panzers where standing at the gates of Paris. Bush just pisses everyone off in general.

There is not a chance for this starting a prolonged war cause the US despite all it's resources cannot sustain one. Unless they start to go the 1984 way.

Honestly people, read your Churchhill before making half assed Hitler comparisons.

And on another note, whey does hitler get such a bad rap when uncle joe essentially gets a free pass? Is it because it's more ethical to kill 20 million with equality than 6 million with prejudice?

But noooo Ö (as John Belushi liked to say). Instead, we get evasions and tortuous rationalizations like the Slavoj Ziz^ek zigzag: This extremely fashionable postmodern Marxist academic will concede the tens of millions murdered by Stalin, etc., but itís "different" from the millions murdered by Hitler, because the Soviet project was built on good intentions, on utopian aspirations; the tens of millions dead were an unfortunate side effect, a kind of unfortunate, accidental departure from the noble Leninist path that still must be pursued.

Nifty semi-relavent quote from this article.

Quaoar? Why couldn't they use Roman myth and legend for the name, like every single other satellite in our solar system?

They named it after the tribe that lives in the area where the discovering telescope is standing. So it's more of a political correct statement.

Btw I don't consider the thing a planet. Just a really oversized asteroid. Then again, what is the exact requirement needed to achieve "planet" status? Apart from eating two dozen donuts each day ofcourse.

This extremely fashionable postmodern Marxist academic will concede the tens of millions murdered by Stalin, etc., but itís "different" from the millions murdered by Hitler,

Stalin threw Marxism out the moment he got in control and Stalinism was introduced. So the whole idea of blaming Marxism for those killed millions is moot. Shows the level of said Marxist.

Think about it. If no-one in the world ate meat, farmers would have no need to keep animals. In fact, since all of that beautiful grazing land would have to be given over to cereals in order to provide enough sustenance for an entire planet of veggies, there simply wouldn't be anywhere to keep them. There would be no economic imperative for any farmer to keep animals - apart from a few cows to produce milk - and they'd pretty much become endangered species'.

Believe me, I'd love to be a vegetarian, I really would, animal rights and all that. I'm only eating meat to keep cows from becoming extinct.

In the EU, at least, there'd be no economic implications for farmers, cos we'd probably still bloody subsidise them for the beef they're no longer producing...
