For full access to the game you just bought,  buy more stuff!
October 7th 2002, 18:56 CEST by Post-It

Rockstar Games is employing a new strategy to make some extra cash on the side, as though GTA: VC isn't going to net them millions of dollars anyway.

Rockstar announced that they are going to be releasing the soundtrack to GTA:VC concurrently with the game. However, because the soundtrack is so large, it is going to be broken up into seven different CDs, available for $13.98 each or $49.98 for th box set. This is not unusual at all, many games release soundtracks, as market definitely exists for game soundtracks. However, Rockstar Games has decided to add a twist.

When placed in a computer the CDs will give the user access to restricted portions of the GTA:VC website, where there will be additional web content (who cares) but also codes to open certain aspects of the game. These aspects are unkown but I would assume they are probably only cheat codes. Regardless that they are only cheat codes and will be avaiable all over the interweb in 24 hours, what kind of precedent might this set? If publishers percieve that they can generate profit by distributing game content across various media, thus forcing the consumer to buy more, then why wouldn't they do it? Like UT2K3? Well, to get the super secret level and full access to the to editing tools, you also have to buy Mark Rein's UT2K3 Editing Book!, etc.

Or is it all just a clever marketign ploy?

Hmmm marketing ploy, perhaps.  But because of the medium in which this information is accessed, the company in question could not possibly hope to contain the content indefinitely.

And I think they expect that.  So its likely just some sort of extra gimmick to make people feel better about blowing $50 on music they would likely not even want to hear.

honestly, i hate this shit.

i pay $50, i get the game, all of it (devs owe me nothing). i dont like the idea of people (naive or stupid, your pick) dropping another $50 for more game content, not really caring about the music.

Well, it is capitalism at work.  Don't like it? Don't buy what they are selling.

On the other hand, it seems weird that a supposedly clued-in marketing machine like Rockstar would do something like this because while they owe us nothing, history is littered with the corpses of companies whom the public thinks were trying to 'nickle and dime them', ala DIVX (not the codec), etc.

It's a great idea. If you are stupid enough to spend the extra cash on it you don't deserve to keep said cash.

It's a great system!

Remember the Sega Megadrive X32? it had this weird cartridge for the Sonic the Hedgehog game, where you could plug a cartridge of any older Sonic game on top, to unlock hidden levels.

This concept is hardly new, and I've seen games where merchandise or additional purchases unlocked a lot more than a few web pages and some cheat codes. If a whole new city or a new island would be unlocked, then it'd be something different altogether, but in this case it's really nothing to be stunned about.

You guys are aware that licensing music costs money, yes? A cost that could be defrayed by, say, selling the music in a nice box set?

As for the "extra content", the blurb on vicecityradio.com doesn't indicate that it is in-game content. So all you get are some cheat codes, and probably wallpaper and screensavers. Maybe some radio chatter cut from the game/outtakes.

This isn't "marketign", "marketign" is selling something intangible. This is seven CD's of music (and radio parody) for $50. That's straight money for goods.

its likely just some sort of extra gimmick to make people feel better about blowing $50 on music they would likely not even want to hear.

I doubt it. Not many people will spend $50 for just cheat codes and unspecified bonus material.

Some game soundtracks have been quite successful. The Wipeout XL soundtrack (PS version, not the PC version) featured some well-known European trance DJs and it sold quite well. I seem to remember seeing the Wing Commander: Prophecy soundtrack at an HMV...I don't think it sold too well though. Movies do well on soundtracks and of ten feature exclusive "web content" or whatever so why not games?

We all know that the exclusive content will unlocked by the folks at Fairlight, Razor, or Deviance before the game even hits retail so why sweat it?

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of trance music so back off Bailey!

The 32x and the Sonic cart with Lock On Technology were not related.  It was I believe Sonic and Knuckles, and plugging in other carts just gave you a variation of a really dumb puzzle game. You could actually plug in any other cart, it didn't matter.

I hate apartment complexes that try to screw you on your security deposit when you move out.  I recently moved from my apartment into a house, and whaddya know?  They want to give me back $50 from my $300 deposit because "the apartment was left pretty dirty."  Odd, considering the fact that I spent the last day cleaning everything in sight.  Granted, I didn't tackle the oven, and I didn't wipe down the inside of the fridge, but that's it.  Bastards.

Keep in mind, there were circumstances when I moved in that keep me from being responsible for any damage done to the carpet.  And faded paint and dust and such are covered under normal wear and tear, which they can't legally charge me for.

As for damages, they can get me on a few tack holes in the walls, but that's about it.

I've requested an itemized list, which I'm sure I won't receive until the 30th day out of the 30 days they have to get the check to me.  Hopefully I'll be able to go through it and pick out everything they're trying to pass off.  I'd settle for half the deposit, no problem.  But 1/6th of it just doesn't cut the mustard.  Bastards!

Ok, I'm done.  About the topic - who cares.  I just like to blow shit up.

so what's the big deal here? game soundtrack? big fuck? don't want it, then don't buy it. As for accessing website media crap, several bands have done this sort of thing before, their CD lets you access some weird area of their site, so what? you don't need any of this to play the game so who cares? what do you get anyway, some cheat codes, well those aren't normally released right away anyway. Nobody is missing out on their gaming experience by not having these cd's so what's the issue? Now if they did something gay like not have ingame music unless you buy at least one of the cd's that would suck and be cause to cry foul! This is a useless topic!

When I was buying Tekken 4 over the weekend, I was accosted about preordering Vice City. So I asked what's new. Then the guy proceeded to mention that there were X number of new vehicles. Wow. All the hype for a couple new cars and motorcycles and helicopters. Not really an answer I wanted to hear.

I got bored of GTA3 pretty quickly, and I'm not a huge fan of 80s music. So, meh.

It doesn't say anything about the software other than it includes Cyberlink PowerDVD , MusicMatch Jukebox, Sonic MyDVD, VERITAS DLA, VERITAS RecordNow, VERITAS Simple Backup .  I figure I'll probably end up buying software, so as long as it includes drivers I'm o.k. with it.  I'll let you know, they aren't shipping for 1-2 weeks.  I'm emailing now to make sure its not somehow configured for Dell-only machines.
