New Nazi Position Filled
September 2nd 2002, 18:35 CEST by zimbardo_ugly

After a series of marketing schemes which filled the space between idiocy and desperation quite nicely, Acclaim once again breaks new grounds in Identity Marketing (tm), again proving itself the Quentin Tarantino of advertising.

Let me just give you a quick rundown (although everyone knows it already) of their marketing schemes (in no particular order).

First, there is this great offer in which you change your name to Turok and get "500 in cash, plus an X-Box, plus every Turok game that ever was". Since most of the Turok games are for other systems (if not all of them, I'm not really into Turok so I wouldn't know), they might as well have thrown in a Black & Decker power drill. Turok might have used it to kill dinosaurs, had there been one at hand. On the site, they even joke about the idea: "Your identity is your most valuable asset - sell it wisely".

Then, there was this guy who seemed like the biggest moron ever, since his part was to imagine there would be a lack of Turok at the launch and wait for it 50 days in advance.

And let us not forget when they wanted to help poor people pay for the funeral, if in return they may pop the old ShadowMan 2 advertisment on grandpa's tombstone.

Now, they are offering $10,000 (in savings bonds) if you name your child Turok. The baby has to be born on September 1st, you see, since otherwise there might be millions of people wanting to name their child after the stupidest videogame hero ever.

The New Nazi position is filled, at least as far as videogames and the art of selling them is concerned. Please, do discuss.

I assume that Morn will be carted off to jail now, for having this topic's title stored on his server?

Bye Morn! We'll miss you!

So, anyway, Acclaim. Have they put out any games that weren't sub-par? Ever?

Some people like the Turok games...

I don't know why either.

Like them or not, they're sub-par, no? Turok may well be the best/most successful property Acclaim has ever produced. But that didn't change the one Turok game I ever saw from being asstastic.

I could well be wrong, though, which is why I asked. The only other Acclaim game I have seen at all recently was Shadowman; which, while having a few intriguing elements, was uninstalled within minutes of wrestling with one of the worst 3rd person cameras/control schemes ever.

I fail to see how all of this makes Acclaim the New Nazis. Care to explain?

Anyone?

These are old marketing tricks rebadged, and people will do them for 15 minutes of fame, just ignore it and it'll go away once the game flops and the marketing budget is pulled.

That is all.

Frankly if Acclaim were the New Nazis in this case then their "stunts" would have worked perfectly as everyone would choose to believe them.

Not the global laughter currently heard at their expense.

You mean the one where you walked around through heavy fog, died without seeing what killed you, and shot arrows in to your feet?

"'Halo 2' is a lot like 'Halo', only it's 'Halo' on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas," explained Jason Jones, the head of Bungie Studios, "and the ninjas are all on fire, too."

I can't see how this kind of 'shock' marketing would be worthwhile. Sure Acclaim makes headlines that way, but in the end of the day nobody remembers anything about the game that they're supposed to be pushing. It'll just be "hey, did you hear about that crazy marketing stunt". Also I get the feeling that the game doesn't have anything special to talk about, so now they try to create some buzz with supah-cool advertising stunts.

Go figure.

Acclaim have published some fine games.  The previously mentioned Re-Volt and Aggressive Inline as well as Shadow Man, Forsaken, Xtreme G3, etc.  They're also responsible for publishing Bust-a-Move and Bubble Bobble related games (mostly developed by Probe, ported from the original Taito games) in the US on various platforms.

They do release a large quantity of games I'm just not interested in though.  And their marketing stunts have been getting more and more stupid, but if you ask me the less said about them the better.  You can argue all you want about how all press isn't good press, but having this story posted here is the virtual equivilent of the over-the-water-cooler "Can you believe they did that?" mindshare that Acclaim was looking for.  So, to paraphrase Matt G:

SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP.

I liked Shadow Man quite a bit, and found the controls/camera to be fine, but I played it on a Dreamcast not on the PC.  This may have made a difference as I know for a fact that I would have been much less fond of GTA3 if the PC version were my first exposure to it.

If I recall correctly, Turok 1 was the best fps for console systems in it's day by a wide margin. Wore the crown until goldeneye came out.

Two quick things off the top of my head that Turok has done right.

a.) some of the best over-the-top gore in a fps. Head shots are really satisfying.

b.) being able to use a good bow in a non stealthy fps.  Why don't more fps's model a bow anyway? The only other decent one I can think of (and I don't mean a crossbow) was in the Theif series. We like good old fashioned bow's. Would love to see more.
