Scott Miller's Origin of the Species
August 19th 2002, 15:06 CEST by m0nty

Scott Miller of 3D Realms now has a column on the site of the International Game Developers Association, in which he holds forth on subjects like how original games are superior to licensed properties. I hardly need say more for the rabid fanboi hordes to descend on PlanetCrap in an orgy of violence and depravity.

The August edition of this august journal was in a Q&A format, with the asker being an IGDA member named Raphael van Lierop. The questions covered the relationship between gaming and other media, movies in particular, and how cross-pollination of concepts and storylines might stifle creativity.

A: I don't see lack of original content as too big a problem. The game industry will always have original games and the movie industry original movies, and the hits from each industry will have a good chance of crossing over to other entertainment industries.

I'm sure I don't need to go through all the nuances of 3DR-is-just-an-IP-thieves-guild this, or Scott's-a-marketing-ignoramus that. In fact, Scott is not actually wrong about anything in his column, but I guess there's no pleasing some people. As an example, here is what Geekgirl had to say on the subject:

By the way, speaking of Scotty, did you know he’s got his own column now on some sight? Its called “Miller time”. Once again the boys at 3-D Realms manage to avoid coming up with something original and ripped off more popular culture.

Do we really need to get the inside scoop on the game business from some guy that can’t even ship a game? I think not, but I don’t run the world. At least not yet.

What do you need questions for? FIGHT!

About the column, I was asked to do it by the IGDA's director because I was fairly active helping newbies in their forums.  I didn't want to do it, but they were insistent.  It's strictly a Q&A column, not a soapbox.  Oh, and they named the column, not I.  I do not like the name--I would have named it something simple like "Game Development Matters."

Who's geekgirl?!  (Not that I care, so nevermind.)

Anyway, glad to see I'm worthy of my own topic!  ;-)

Who's geekgirl?!

No doubt a certified industry illuminary whose advice and criticism should "rock" your "world" due to her being important to possibly up to four people. Two of whom may have even seen a computer! Er, no I don't know either. Li'l help?

Anyway I voted Yes! because 1) I'd just rubbed chlorine on my tongue, and 2) I can't wait to see what witty Duke Nukem Forever comments are spewed forth!

Translation: "I'm not responsible for anything. Everything is a misrepresentation. All the hot air leaked out when the damned interviewer had the freakin' gun to my head regarding the interview. I just answered their questions in the same way some dipwheedle high school dropout would answer a letter from an old Mr. Biology teacher who taught me osmosis via the after-school plan. I avoided preaching since everyone knows I don't practice jack squat and all creativity has stagnated in a puddle of George's ankle pus.

Aside from all this, negative attention is a fix from my early childhood. I'll take it, since Romero has now bounced back, and here I am leering at my occupation with the dim-witted drools of complete idiocy.

I think the column looks at licensed games in the wrong direction.  Its not so much a matter of licensed games not being among the top game sellers and thus stupid to produce, its more that a license allows what would otherwise be shovelware to actually sell more units than it would without the license.  Licensed games are almost universally bad and developed by the B or C teams of a dev house.  If these people weren't working on games with licenses, they'd be working on games just as shitty with no license (and much less of a chance of selling well).

Shovelware's going to be with us no matter what, licensed shovelware is actually useful from a publisher's standpoint because it will be shovelware with some existing branding, mindshare, whatever.

I like the fact that Scott gives back to the community through his writings/teachings.  Sure we may not agree with all of it, but at least he's trying.

It reminds me of the kid in special ed who wants to play football, but doesn't really have the physical mass and coordination to make the team, yet, the team feels sorry for him and lets him play the last play in the last game senior year.  Of course, he ends up getting a cracked skull, bruised kidneys, broken nose and a fractured spine from being tackled by twelve two-hundred pound gorillas as soon as the ball is snapped, but at least he got his chance to shine in the sun.  Well, not exactly like that, but close.  Right?

The IGDA is such a waste of time.  Especially their monthly 'meetings', which usually involve a bunch of idea men begging for jobs.  If you are one of the unlucky ones who are actually employed in the game industry, this is an average conversation:

<insert greetings here>
Random guy talks about all these cool ideas he has.
I ask what kind of experience he has.
He answers with "Well, none yet, but is your company hiring"
EOD.

"'Halo 2' is a lot like 'Halo', only it's 'Halo' on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas," explained Jason Jones, the head of Bungie Studios, "and the ninjas are all on fire, too."

I'm not sure who annoys me more, Geekgirl or Scott Miller.  Thus I'm running out of things to say on this thread.

This is perhaps the 5th or 6th thread in a row that I couldn't give a rats ass about.  Is this some grand conspiracy to get rid of the troll by boring him off the site?

Hardware Hijack:

Problem:  5.1 speakers with no rear output when mp3s are played with Musicmatch jukebox.

History:  WinXP (home edition), Audigy card.  Latest drivers installed.   Rear speakers work perfectly with Winamp and games.  I've only been able to duplicate this problem with Musicmatch jukebox.

Help a brother out?
