UnknownPlayer.com to War Journalists: r u Ubi?
August 17th 2002, 16:19 CEST by m0nty

UnknownPlayer.com, which IMHO has become the best inheritor of the legacy of the old Lum the Mad community of MMOG ranters, has picked a fight with fanbois of Shadowbane, the upcoming MMORPG from Ubi Soft. A lengthy story written by many members of the UP team alleged that Ubi Soft had successfully neutralised negative reporting about the ongoing beta of Shadowbane, by paying off members of the fansite community, specifically from the Warcry network.

Ubi Soft seems to have found a sure-fire way of insuring they get good press coverage: they gag all independent news sources with a Non-Disclosure Agreement then secretly pay certain reporters that are then allowed to disclose details about ShadowBane.

The gist of the problem is that two Warcry posters, who rejoice in the names of Waylander and J, are part of something called the Herald program, which was set up by Ubi Soft to publicise activities in its beta program. Those in the Herald program, and indeed everyone else in the beta, had to sign the usual NDA preventing them from indulging in LtM-style ranting. The Heralds wrote War Journals that appeared on the Ubi Soft site, and a relationship between Ubi Soft and Heralds exists whereby the Heralds will be paid for their work at some point in the future. UP accused the War correspondents of being employees of Ubi Soft without disclosing this fact in their reporting.

The subsequent thread in the UP forums has brought out the best and worst of the MMOG community - ad hominem attacks, flamage and bitter rivalries playing out in plain text... along with several passages of lucid conversation where the issues were coherently debated by writers with impressive background knowledge. Accusations of unprofessionalism flew left and right, with no one remaining unscathed. The inevitable response by Waylander answered some questions, but raised others.

UP is right in that there has been little to no publicity about Shadowbane outside official channels, and if there are problems they aren't being widely reported. The most recent screenshots certainly don't fill a prospective player with hope that the game's Arcane3D engine will look anything special. Do you think any of this matters to how Shadowbane will play when it is released later this year, or does this show how desperate Ubi Soft is to conceal the fact that the game will suck? Did either UP or Warcry have any credibility before this mess, and have they gained anything out of it? Did you old LtMers out there devour the UP thread in wistful hunger for the good old days when MMOG ranting was young and vibrant? Are there any good ranting sites out there now, with OMM in a coma, Lowtax turning SomethingAwful into a blog featuring his cat, and most of the other LtM descendants losing their vitality?

MMOG ranting is a dead art, with no true practitioners left alive.

That being said, having known J. since the days of DAoC beta, I'm laughing at the idea that someone is accusing him of not saying Shadowbane has problems.

So I have a cry for help that goes out to all of you with photoshop experience. I am trying to create text that will lay on top of a large area, 640 x 480, and no matter what I try I can't figure out how to create crisp text. It is always either very aliased  or when I apply a blur to it, too fuzzy. Small text looks fine, but as soon as I create some 60 pt  text it loses its crispness. So I guess my question is how does one create large crisp looking text? Are there large sized fonts out there and I just can't find them (I looked)  or is there some combination of layers and filters that I am just not aware of? I've looked around to try and find a tutorial on the subject but I can't find anything. The only thing is, I'm nervous that it's something really simple and I am trying to hard and overlooking it. Anyway, any help, suggestions, or points in the right direction would be appreciated!

I think that paying people who then become the official channels of information for the game is suspect and unprofessional. Do I think there's some sinister evil plan behind it? No. Besides, it's a MMOG. Does it really matter what kind of problems the game has in beta? There will still be so many copies and accounts purchased in the first week that all the game servers will implode due to "unexpected demand".

So there.

Post-It,

Shucks, I've only used 5 and 7.

First make sure you are using a TrueType or PostScript font, then look for a checkbox that says "anti-aliasing" and check that off.

It may also be that when you are typing it's just giving you a preview of what it will look like, and when you click OK or switch to another tool it will smooth it out. I know that's how it works for transforms.

Let's see...SB has been in beta for a few decades now, it is designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator of the play2crush catass powergamer, and has been known for having the most rabid fanboys since way back in the LTM days. Not to mention the old "preorder to crush" strategy as well as other WP publicity gaffs. Yet these "War Reports" describe huge glorious battles full of strategic tactics and political intrigue, with nary a hint of leet haxors or rampant bunny genocide. How anyone with an ounce of sense and MMOG experience could believe for a second that these reports are unbiased or even come anywhere close to approximating the beta gameplay experience is beyond me. I do however find it quite amusing that these rant journalists trying to follow in Lum's footsteps don't even know whether or not they will ever be paid for their works of fiction. These guys really need a good "Will Tool For Food" sign.

UP is ok, but I prefer P2P for my post LTM/SND fix. A little more even keel and diverse, the days of moral outrage towards the evil MMOG developer are over. Of course the 'Crap still reigns supreme, but I can't help but wish the illustrious posters here would spend a little less time with their insider jokes/noob bashing/BaileyTron fetishes, and a little more time discussing games. I guess all the good stuff is in irc land these days...

Post-It, are you using this for a print job or just web graphics? I have noticed that the large fonts can tend to be kinda pixelated, so sometimes I like to start with smaller fonts and just enlarge them using the 'Image Size' command, although this may not be good for print job. Also, are you avoiding anti-aliasing because of matting issues? As in there are jagged lines around the edge of the type? If so, you might want to try using the 'Outer Glow' filter instead of the built in matting tool. Just make the the outer glow match the darkest/dominant color in the background graphic, and make sure you make it a solid 100% if you are saving as a transparent gif file. Not sure if this is any help at all, to be of real help I would need more information...

God, meet your robot replacement...

Thankfully for the true believers, there are plenty of people who have plentiful desire and little ability willing to write for what few sites still bump around in the leftover dregs of the rant site scene.

I think it's interesting that whenever a pc developer says that they're not including a multiplayer mode because they want to focus on making the single player mode as good as possible, I think they're full of shit. But now that all the consoles are going for internet multiplayer, I find myself automatically ignoring any game that says it has internet play, because I apparently subconsciously feel that this means the single player game will be lacking.

Odd, that.

People actually care about shadowbane?  Maybe it's just me, but it seems to be the least attractive of all the next round of MMORPGs.  Of course, it was the least attractive of the last round as well..

"'Halo 2' is a lot like 'Halo', only it's 'Halo' on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas," explained Jason Jones, the head of Bungie Studios, "and the ninjas are all on fire, too."

nice "article" linked in 0. not bitter or spun at all. let's look at some Phun Phax:

1. no attribution; author: "The Staff". hiding? why? no balls, no proof, or just pure bullshit? you post anonymously, you just cheerfully discarded 80% of your "credibility" right there.

2. they're slamming a fan site for... giving glowing impressions of a game. so... let's see. next time i go to buy a used car, i should sue the salesman for hyping up a piece of shit he wants to move off the lot. rrrriiiiggght.

3. OMG THEY'RE PAID THEY'RE NOT OBJECTIVE OMG OMG OMG!11!!!1!1. let's say it again: fan site. fan. short for fanatic. by definition unreasonably biased.

4. who fucking cares? SB's going to be destroyed by AC2 and SWG because let's face it, SB is butt fucking ugly. any press is better than no press, right?

i got five bucks Ubi cut "The Staff" a check to pitch this complete bullshit fringe story to fire up the fanbois with fake conflict and "controversy". Warcry's got enough fucking pop-up ads payin the bills to make X-10 jealous and if J's gettin paid by the company for the shit he "writes," hey, more power to him. (we'll leave the "lowering standards and no qualifications/zero barrier to entry" discussion for another time, methinks.) i mean, who's reading Warcry anyway? certainly not the mainstream.

in a nutshell: if they are getting paid to blow sunshine up fanboi ass, or if they aren't, what does it matter either way? anyone that visits Warcry on any regular basis is already wired to buy the fucking game anyway (and is more than likely runnin a full suit of pop-up blockers), and i can't think of the last time i seen a hardcore fanboi that ain't already lying about the game he loves for free. gettin paid is sellin out? no. whoring for free is, sparky.

I didn't use the #0 post to put forth my own opinions about the validity of the story much: that was for you guys to judge. Suffice to say that I think the fact that the UP guys posted private emails was not professional, but on every other sub-issue I think they can defend their viewpoint with some weight. Even if they're not right on every issue, the mad propz must go out for them for raising the issues in the first place - it's admirable journalism.

What, Ubi offers them some payoff to write nice-nice and they spaz out with psuedo-journo integrity? These kids are just hankering for the days of the LtM-unearths-Verant-Evil jihads. Funcom kept AO-Basher as their privately funded lapdog fansite, no one says boo, but now this is the crime of the century? The Vault Network gladhands every crappy MMOG in existence in the hopes of getting advertising or hiring off some of its writers for community reps, (supar-exclusive PR guaranteed!) but this is a war crime against gamers?

Like crash said, fan site. Two words that make the entire issue a non-issue.

Just to be clear m0nty, I'm not trying to be pissy at you, I think you did a good job of summing up the whole ordeal and pertinent links so those interested wouldn't have to; I just think UP is freaking out over something that is clearly old hat.

And just what are the professional ethics of a gaming rant site?  You know, whenever someone disagrees with unknown player, or the old Lum the Mad or whatever, the big 'professional' word comes out. I suspect most people who use it as a slam don't really know what it means.

UP is following the professional standards of a MMOG rant site to a tee.
