If you want to play this game...
August 11th 2002, 07:12 CEST by Greg

Project 3 Interactive recently released a multiplayer beta for their game New World Order. The game itself looks to be a fairly generic SOF2/CS clone. However, what some may consider aggregious is a specific prerequisite needed to play the multiplayer beta. The game requires a beta patch to DirectX 8, specifically DirectPlay 8.2, to play.

On the beta download page, P3 Interactive states that their use of DirectPlay causes massive lag when using DirectX 8.1. So they offer a beta patch to an OS component (even though DirectX was originally not an OS component, DX has been included with every OS since Windows 98.)

Is there so large a demand for this game that Project 3 Interactive would be able to coerce Microsoft into making the beta patch available to the public? Or do they both get some benefit from getting people to test the betas for them?

Project 3 Interactive should hope that by the time New World Order ships the beta tag has been removed from DirectPlay 8.2. It is bad enough to require a beta patch for a beta game. Including a beta patch in a retail game would be very unprofessional.

I think it's kind of silly...sure, planning ahead for the future is good I guess, but why bother releasing a multi-player beta to the public when about 99% of the people can't play it well and come away with a bad impression?

Don't Panic.

Who the fuck cares? You're playing a beta anyway, why not require a beta API?

Plus, Microsoft didn't just make the directx beta available just for this purpose.

Anyway, I won't play NWO anyway because yawn.

Obviously, if you require odder things, you'll get more dedicated individuals who are going to actually report bugs. At least, I hope that's part of their reasoning in releasing this NWO beta.

I have beta tested this article.

Results:

-"Egregious" is misspelled. (Class 3)
-No connection drawn between this being a company who is too uninspired to make anything but a pretty clone and the decision to beta in this manner. (Class 2)
-The phrase "use of DirectPlay" is unaccompanied by an aside expressing bemusement. (Class 1)
-No mentions of erotic fiction involving pairings of Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. (Class Foodbunny)

I thought DirectPlay has always caused "massive lag" for any game that tried to use it. So wouldn't this make 8.2 the first non-beta version?

A disturbing trend may have been started by Project 3 Interactive.

I think you're giving too much credit to P3I. Looks more like they're hell bent for leather on crashing and burning rather than trend setting. Getting people to play a demo is hard enough (if it's a big download). Requiring a DX beta to play the game effectively limits your audience to four gamers or something.

Also, what message do you want to send to people? Here's the demo so you can try whether it runs on your machine... only it won't, but you need to install beta stuff first.

I've been following NWO ever since they released those early astonishingly good screenies only to see how the game has been visually degraded to CS looks, and by now I've lost all hope. The multiple failures on the way to this point have been astonishing. Telling people that a demo will be released on a fixed date, then not releasing the demo until 3-4 weeks later (and telling that there were obvious problems that had to be fixed for the release... if they were obvious who was the moron who promised the demo on fixed date), and then releasing the buggiest mp test that I've _ever_ seen.

I really wanted this thing to work out, but by now it feels like I'm driving past a car accident and I'm just mesmerized by the wreckage.

Oh, and Jimbo's updates don't really give me any additional confidence:

The waiting is over, the MP Beta 2.0. is there to amuse you the rest of the summer !!

Guys, thanks for all your useful feedback since June 1. We have been working our butts of since then and have enjoined neither sunshine nor seaside fun. Instead we were locked in our cellar and are as pale as a developer can be. But, we are confident we are now delivering a worthy beta for New World Order, which you can download here. The new beta includes tons of updates (scope was added), improvements (such as the weapons) adjustments in game play (bobbing was diminished for example) and bug fixes (e.g. joining, default controls etc). A full list of all changes and bug fixes will appear on our forum in a post by me.

I mean... wow... the improvements include weapons! And if you're going to publish an update on your publishers pages, please, please run it through a spell checker.

Oh, and on Project 3 interactive, their pages state that:

With the acquisition of Project Three Interactive Studio AB (Termite Games) in Malm, Sweden, the fast-growing Project Three Group has integrated game development and publishing activities under one umbrella, thus securing a steady flow of quality products for years to come. In the near future the company strives to increase its number of releases and cover console gaming platforms as well.

Considering that Termite has now been working for something like 4 years on NWO and has still to release the game, a "steady flow" might be an overstatement.

[/rant off]

Yeah, I really can't figure out why this thing ticks me off so badly... I guess it's just that seeing so much wasted potential gives me the creeps.

I think what the real tragic thing about all of this can be summed up by saying we really shouldn't be giving a shit about any of this at all. We shouldn't be mildly interested in a CS clone because CS is a mod that creates a DM game infinitely more simple than the game it was created for. Why would anyone want to COPY THAT? Commercial success? If so, how do they ever plan on having this work? Even their "buy menu" is more complicated than that of counterstrike, it's similar to the shitfuckery (i had to say it once, don't yell at me please) of having to purchase the correct ammunition type for your weaponry instead of pressing buyammo1 or buyammo2, pistol and sidearm respectively. I highly agree with Petri in that the waste of potential is astounding and ridiculous... then again, trying to make your name on the coattails of others isn't exactly a new strategy, is it?

Now, lets all put this behind us and not post a new topic when they show up on fuckedcompany.com, eh?

Using a beta API for a beta stage game, doesn't seem all that bad. In any kind of software dev. using beta API's is pretty common, the only difference here is they wanted to release a demo but the API isn't official yet so what do you do? As long as the API isn't beta when the game ships I don't think this is such a big issue. God I've worked with the Unreal engine and that thing seems permenantly beta till the licensee has no choice, has to ship and fixes it themselves! (sorry warren!!) I have yet to see version of it come out that is in a shippable state as is. I rant, this is no different than any other software development I've done whether you're working with an in-house API or a licensed one, unless it's been (or is being) released to the public they change like mad!!! all the time!

I would just like to say that having played NWN for the first time yesterday, the thing I was most impressed in was the innovation in crate technology: the pentagonal crate. You can have your zombie manboobs, your lovingly rendered flushable toilets, and your lens-flared tracking shots over shiny spaceships, but the pentagonal crate has changed the face of gaming forEVAR.

That is one thing I didn't like about NWN, the sheer number of chests. I'm trying to decide the reasoning behind it: was it a game-lengthening scheme like Max Payne's "time for you to open this door and die so you can try again"? It doesn't seem like it, the game would have been pretty long without it. No, I think that's just the unintended effect it had. I think it was supposed to be a player rewarding event that just got out of control. Way out of control. I'm wondering who thought it was a good idea. Probably the same person who thought that non-tiny dialogue text was a bad idea.

Take that one guy away, make the actors able to navigate around small objects on the floor, and don't make patches that include a change to the copy protection that breaks legitimate copies of the game (we were lucky and were warned off it before we had to make the re-install to a previous patch or wait for a crack decision), and you've got a good game.

I agree with Matthew.  The single player shipped version of NWN had:

1) Way too many things to open (crates, barrels, etc)

with

2) Way too many of those things being LOCKED, forcing you to pick lock/smash/whatever.

And

3) Due to fairly random level design it was impossible to tell which chests/barrels seemed to be important and which were just for the obsessive compulsive collectors who didn't mind spending half a minute cracking open a chest to get 2 measly gold coins.
