Twerps and their Petitions
August 9th 2002, 11:19 CEST by bago

Why are people deluded into thinking petitions about anything even do a whit of good on the internet? Are these the same people that madly vote on online polls because... they like clicking buttons?

Face it, petitioning a commercial entity is idiotic. They have to sell their product to stay in business, and it has to sell well. It's in the companies interest to do the right thing, and if they don't they go out of business. What good is a petition going to do? A bunch of people who will buy the product regardless trying to implement their vision through some pseudo democratic bullying is not going to do anything, other than releive the angst of the overly political twit who started the petition in the first place.

On the other hand you have the whole anonymous nature of the internet, and it's not working in the favor any petition put online.

LesJarvis, loading screen games vs. context switches, marketing vs. physics...eh, I'm tired already.

I'd sign a thong gun petition.  And a petition for more Indie Game Jams, where something like the thong gun might actually happen.

It's the Hippie Squat Model of software architecture. "If I want to paint the doors and floors bright blue and put the toilet right into the kitchen, why not?" It's very offensive to user sensibilities and it is as ugly as a sack full of penguin guts. But, you know, that is a vital systemic advantage.  Because that catches the eye of the committed crusader.  It actually brings people in who will stay and work hard for no money.

Petitioning for a game or sequel to be made makes marginally more sense, in that it theoretically could show that there was some demand.  If online petitions were secure.  And online petition clickers were honest and sane and willing to put their money where their mouths had so recently been.  Say, how is Loki Games doing these days?

Maybe they could all move to Austin, TX and get it on a local ballot.  Prop 23 -- The Warren Spector Drop That DX2 Shit And Start Working On SS3 Now Bitch initiative.

Petitions would be a lot more meaningful if they had a paypal button...or two.  Put up two donation meters -- say, New Sniper Rifle vs. Old Sniper Rifle -- then split the total amongst the devs as an end-of-project bonus.

Cough cough.  Monolith, ahem, Blood2 Expansi-cough.  Someone start a petition for companies to never, ever, use lithtech.  I mean, I played the last M&M and rather enjoyed it despite it's terrible graphics.  The latest?  Someone buy up all the remaining copies of that one and stick them on a pike at the entrance gate to Game Developer land.

Else, George B. :  Take a few screenshots and add them to the main menu of GamersIlluminati's message board.  Let them serve as a warning.

Damn System Shock 2 ... it's the only game that freaks me out bad enough that I have to stop playing.  I started into it again last night with the hopes that THIS time I'll be able to finish it.  I played for a little while and then I entered the med lab.  I was greeted by a hanging, swinging body and then a voice from my right, "Are we joined?".  I turn and am face to face with a zombie ... I beat it down, save my game and go watch TV for a while.

I figure I'll play until I start crying each night ... eventually I'll get through it.

Hah, yeah, same here.  That's probably why it took me so long to actually finish the damn thing.  Even during the last bit of the game, I'd turn a corner, see a zombie that I certainly was not expecting, jump, drop my mouse, hit random keys, spin around, run away, finally get ahold of myself and kill the zombie.

Rather than an online petition, I think we should start a  petition via chain letter.  Y'know, it's just like a regular chain letter except it has a bunch of "signatures" (actually just names) at the bottom, and may never actually make it to whoever it's supposed to be targetted at.  I think that would work better.  For one thing, people who don't sign get seven years bad luck.

Warren, such abject cynicism! Have you considered a career in marketing and/or eating babies?

I think some people were actually happy with the patch, believe it or not. Besides, it was the exception that proves the rule, which is that online petitions are not merely a waste of time but a super-mega gigantic waste of time. Or something.

I've yet to lose a CD, but on a couple of occasions I've misplaced the original CD cases (since I tend to relocate my CDs into mutli-CD sleeve case thingies) which had the CDKEY stickers on them.

Doh.

Oh yeah, and worse yet one of the times this happened was with my Half-Life CD case.  I hadn't played Half-Life in a year or more, still had the original CD, had lost the case with the CDKEY.  Decided I'd finally try out Counterstrike because, hell, all these other people loved it so there must be something to it, right?  So I went out and bought a new Half-Life copy just to get the CDKEY so I could play CS.

Man, was I disappointed!  Worst. Repurchase. Ever.
