So, like, my computer went "bee-bee-beep-bee-beep"
July 25th 2002, 13:30 CEST by Greg

My PC devoured like, half this topic. It was a really good, like, topic. But, uh, I had to write it again, and  I had to do it fast, so its not, uh, as good.

Its kind of...

... a bummer.

Has this ever happened to, like, you?

Erm, anyone here have any experience with DVD-Camcorders?  My friend is thinking of laying down the cash for a Hitachi one, but I'm kinda as to whether these things are worth the money yet...

I think buying anything that burns to a DVD is still in the early days, too many standards that don't work with each other, as for camcorders it sound insanely early to be thinking about buying one, haven't they only been on the market for only a few weeks?

Apple is really, really, really, on biblical proportions, bad at making ads that sell computers.

They need to stop showing people, colours, art, comics, psychos, and show the damn things actually doing something. A shot of the OS in action would be a hell of a start.

They will never learn.  They keep winning artsy fartsy awards and shit for the ads, which to them means success. Duh!.

Since we're talking about digital cameras - I'm thinking of buying one this weekend.  Was going to go with the one that clicks into my Jornada but it's 640x480 and the coolness factor doesn't warrant spending that much for that little, when for only a couple of hundred more I can get into a good-ish standalone digital still.

Hotbuttons:

CompactFlash2, Rechargeable battery, good resolution.
Pricerange:  $350USD, $550 C$.

The only effective ad Apple could ever target me with would involve a rack of current games, all of which would play on their platform. Until then, they're a toy computer to me, given that my graphic and design skills stop just short of cave drawing.

You know, it's funny, in a way.

The mac has the potential to be almost console-ish when it comes to games.  Closed box hardware, damn near guaranteed compatability if you meet the requirements.  Gotta wonder why games haven't taken off on that platform.  Well, I guess you don't have to wonder, it's because macs are expensive and not very widespread.

However, I'd probably love making mac only games, and I bet overall, the gaming experience on the newer ones would probably be top notch.  Of course, apple has a habit of breaking backwards compatability, so the love probably wouldn't last long.

Still.

We're not "Whinny," either,  "Looser".

Add that ability, and someone it ceases to be a toy?

How do you author those multimedia messages? My brother just picked up the same phone and my initial impression was that the MMS is just about the stupidest thing evar. Instead of getting the message instantly or being able to scroll the text or anything, I now have to wait for... [beebebeee] <insert anim gif here> [didahdeduum] multimedia to end.

Petri,

If your network can handle MMS (and I'm guessing they do in finland with the Nokia 7650 now out) you need to either buy the camera that bolts on, or you can import pictures from your digital camera/handheld/laptop to it using IR or bluetooth, theres software on the cd thats very painless.

It's very gimmickey, but I'll probably pick up the camera once they drop in price (phone cost me $150, camera is the same price on it's own). Shots are 640x480 and you can save them to the web from the phone too (which is another way to get them on the phone).

There was a time in the not too distance past when Apple was nearly openly hostile to the idea of games on Macs, because they felt it cheapened the platform and it wouldn't be taken seriously by businesses.  After getting their asses handed to them in both the office and gaming environments by Microsoft, they changed their tune and began writing that sprockets stuff, which was actually quite nice but never as well supported as DirectX.  Now itís probably just too late.  Most people that have Macs do use them as simple work/homework machines and the market of installed Macs isn't significant enough for most developers to worry about support it.

Thanks. But I'm not sure if that answers the question really. The phone had a couple of sample MMS messages (Congratulations! [image of a cake] on Your Birthday! [annoying tune].), and I'm wondering if there's any easy way of creating those, without hooking the phone to a computer.
