Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
July 21st 2002, 02:13 CEST by Fallon

Games aren't funny. Fact. Since, say, Sam & Max, I've not uttered a single genuine chuckle when playing a game, excluding cruel cackles in Quakeworld. Duke Nukem 3D wasn't funny; SiN wasn't funny; God knows any attempt at "the humour" in any RPG wasn't funny.

So - have any recent games made you laugh at their genuine wit? Or has gaming humour died with the adventure genre?

Plus I don't know about any console games so fuck you.

I thought the Curse of Monkey Island was immensely funny.

I'm pretty sure I found Morte from Planescape:Torment frequently funny as well, but I played that a long time ago, so it's kind of hard to remember exactly how funny I found him.  I keep meaning to play through that again...

Curse of Monkey Island hurt me it was so funny.  And I've had some damn good laughs at Anachronox so far.

Minsc in Baldur's Gate 2 was gut bustingly funny too.

No One Lives Forever: Cheap laughs but clever.

Black & White: Creatures had me laughing longer than any game that I can remember... I mean, slapping my thigh out loud laughter.  Things went horribly wrong after my beast was captured.  Not funny after that.

Yep, GTA3 ... the talk radio station is hilarious.  As mentioned above ... the Monkey Island games are great, Anachronox had some great moments and I've gotten a few chuckles out of NWN even.

Games are supposed to be fun ... lighten up and have some.

Hmmm.  Games making me laugh.  I can think of Boo in the Baldur's Gate series.  The unit responses in Starcraft / Warcraft.  Some of Sam's quips in the Serious Sam series.  My friend and I had bought this cheap 'bargain bin' game called Serious Sam a while back having heard nothing else about it but it's cheap price and loaded it up.  Playing through the first few levels, we almost fell out of our respective chairs laughing when Sam started humming the Indiana Jones theme song.  Monkey Island is classic game funny stuff.  GTA had some good laughs too.

Y'know, I don't really have any grudges against BG or Bioware in general, but really, those Piro of Megatokyo types who think Boo and Minsc are the just the fucking be and end all of comedy need to die. Quoting the character 500 times in a row does not particularly endear one, either.

I thought DNMP was pretty funny.  But I'm a sucker for Duke lines.  Certainly wasn't gut-bustingly funny as Sam & Max or Day of the Tentacle (the only real comedy games I can think of).

Jak & Daxter, SSBM are quite hilarious, as well.  Oh and I did buy Super Bombad Racing.  As a game, it blows; but man the super deformed characters are just too silly for words.

One game that had very subtle humor was Moon Project (The Earth 2150 Expansion/Sequel)  You played one faction that was loosely modeled on the Stalin-era Soviets, with a little Mongol horde thrown in.

Your mission briefings were hilarious, because it slowly became clear that the "Maximum Leader" was really completely bonkers, and the war was being waged, if anything, in a careful delicate pattern around his loopy edicts and priorities. The flavor was reminiscent of the mental state/attitude of the Computer in the old pnp RPG Paranoia, if anyone remembers that.

GTA3, funny in many parts. Anachronox, definitely one of the funniest games I have ever played. And Devil May Cry on the PS2 had some funny moments although, I Don't think they were intentional.

I've been trying to think of Japanese games that have made me laugh, but all the ones I've come up with (and there are certainly a few) have been because of silliness or absurdity, never really wit.  The cross dressing section of Final Fantasy 7, the strange octopus Ultross in Final Fantasy 3/6 (especially parts of the opera segment), Mario leaping into the air with his ass on fire screaming "ow ow ow!" in Mario 64 (that still makes me laugh, in fact... perhaps I am sick?), the mad dancing Goron king in Zelda 64 when you rouse him from his depression, the goat in love with a person in gameboy Zelda (well, that one had me laughing for several reasons)... Not really laughing-till-it-hurts material, but there's plenty that at least makes me laugh out loud a bit.  But I can't think of any that I would describe as witty.

I'm not sure why.  I don't know if it's because subtlety is generally decimated in translation, or if it's because Japanese humor (at least in games) doesn't focus on wit, or if it's because I'm just playing the wrong games.  Curious.

Now that you mention it I remember laughing out loud at the Goron king myself.  I can't remember what he said when he was dancing but I seem to remember that being the funniest part of an overall absurd situation.

Nova Z:
And I've had some damn good laughs at Anachronox so far.

The funniest thing about it are the bugs. I've actually hit a showstopper in the sense that the game crashes at a certain point every fucking time. Bastard.

Warren:
Yep, GTA3 ... the talk radio station is hilarious.

My personal favourite is the bloke who shouts "My mother's my sister!" and then "I swear, I thought she was m'cousin!" a minute later. And the camp dude who keeps shouting Village People lyrics. And Fernando ("I'm from... Latin..."), the lady who's trying to promote Citizens Raging Against Phones ("Your organisation is called crap !?") and the dude who thinks that winter is a conspiracy amongst clothing manufacturers. And the presenter on the 80s station ("I blew a lot of tumpets back then. If ya know what I mean"). There's just loads of stuff to choose from.

Even the action can be funny as well, as someone else mentioned. The absolute bull-headedness of the cops when they're trying to take you out often makes for some funny moments, like when they go shooting off the road, into the sea when you do a sudden 180 turn. If Vice City is even half as entertaining, it'll be well worth buying.
