See Me, Hear Me, Kill Me, Buy Me
June 4th 2000, 01:44 CEST by andy

Interscope Records has released a level for Quake III Arena called "Chronic". The level features all-new textures and comes complete with two new deathmatch bots, white-trash rapper Eminem and black-trash producer Dr Dre.

The package was created by Fullerene Productions and is intended to promote Eminem's new album, "The Marshall Mathers LP". Eminem was discovered by Dr Dre, so you see it all makes sense.

This isn't the first time a Quake level has been released to promote an unrelated product. Sony gave us a rather good single player level for the original game, based on the movie Anaconda. (The download page on Sony's site no longer exists, but you could always try this link.)

So what's going on here? Are we just getting some good add-on levels for free, or are the marketing weasels exploiting us like cheap gaming whores?

Are you more likely to see a film because you played a Quake level based on it? Would you buy an album because you've deathmatched against a bot lookalike of the artist?

Im downloading that right now. Does it mean I'll ever buy an Eminem or Dr. Dre album? umm no, I wouldn't touch what they call 'music', let alone pay money for it. I can hear more than I want to of it by turning the radio on. For people more interested in their albums, maybe it makes a difference. I wonder if they included it on the LP?

And after the first post, I better post, huh? Free marketing shit is cool. I played the Anaconda level and enjoyed it, it came with a unique monster (or skin) too, didn't it? Doesn't affect me. I didn't see Anaconda (but HAVE seen Lake Placid and Deep Blue Sea and loved them). If crap products with large marketing budgets want to give us free shit I'm not complaining.

If some gullible halfwit goes out and invests in godawful "one man boy band" Eminem's crap then the fool shouldn't have been trusted with currency in the first place. [there are too many good dance acts around to throw currency at the Rick Astley of Rap].

And that Dr Dre, how absurd is he? Mr 'Poor Black Compton Mafia Trash Ganja Leaf Gangsta Rapping About Doing Illegal Things All the Time With Guns And Drugs And All Sorts Of Crime' sues a PC-matching net service for the crime of kiddies swapping mpegs? OOooh, what a big hard scary villain he is. Wasn't Dr Dre the producers for NWA? (Niggers With Attourneys). The fucking tosspot twat.

To end the moronathon (love that word Warren), and since I can't run that far, I'll make a real post here.

Overall, I tend to disagree with Andy's outrage over creative advertising. I don't mind corporations at all, they only want my money. On the other hand, I want my money too.

So me and the market see eye-to-eye on this matter: Everyone wants Timdog's money (and inflict pain on me for referring to myself in the third person). And that's all fine with me.

In order to get my money, these corporations are (of course) going to advertise anyway they can. If they think quake players might like Dr. Dre, they're going to advertise directly to them. If they're wrong, we all get free shit anyway.

However, that being said, is this legal? Hear me out here: I can't go make quake 3 levels and sell them for profit without getting a license to from id (how did we end up back there :) ). In this case, they aren't selling the level, but they are using quake 3 to push a separate commercial product. Going back to the Apogee threads, this *is* one thing that is not allowed by the 3dRealms agreement.

If they have a license, this is all fine and dandy. If not, its rather questionable.

And I may just be rambling.

Well, at least you're honest. :P

Anywho...I think *some* exploitation is going on with add-ons like this, but nothing really worth worrying about. They took advantage of the popularity of Q3A and two rappers and used it to make a nicely done (from what I saw of the screenshots, haven't had a chance to play it yet) level, for free. No harm in that.

However, had they attempted to SELL it, I think there might be cause for worry. Wouldn't that be borderline illegal (assuming they had a license to sell it in the first place)?

As for buying an album or seeing a movie because of something like this, unless the add-on in question was extraordinary, I seriously doubt it would persuade me to buy anything because of it.

Well... that was disappointing.

The screenshots in the ZIP file looked promising, and my first impression of the level was very good, but when I started playing against the two bots it wasn't any fun at all.

Anyone else get the impression that this was a Bare Minimum (tm) production?

The level is very basic. The textures are all-new, sure, but there aren't that many of them and they're quite basic. The bot models are simple and the skins looked amateurish from what I could see of them. The taunts are pathetic.

On the other hand, the Anaconda level for the original Quake was a great level. It was made by one guy, presumably talent-spotted, whereas Chronic was commissioned from a team that creates other stuff too. Hmm.

Remember what a few of us were saying the other day about artists who don't care about what they're creating? Well, my review of Chronic would be something like "competent but nothing special". Let's hope the new Doom game doesn't turn out the same way.

BTW, the Chronic loading screen shows a billboard that says "Eminem and Dr Dre - sold out". Gave me a chuckle. :)

I think you missed the arguament leading to the conclusive proof Dre is absurd. This is a man whose entire image is based off of doing illegal things, serious things, like killing people, selling drugs, and being generally violent and unsociable and, it goes without saying, blaming everyone in the world except himself. If Spinal Tap were Burning Looting Raping Shooting, Dr Dre is, by his own lyrics, Killing Maiming Snorting Fucking. And he is suing Napster for linking computers together to - mock horror - copy a song, something teenagers have been doing for the last thirty years. Andy. He's bluffing. He's a fake, a fraud, he's not keeping it real, he is talking about killing people and doing drugs and then suing a computer matching service. Dr Dre he is absurd.

id Software would say 'enjoy our competitive game then go home and eat salad with your burger'. id do not go around with inverted crosses around their necks saying they worship they Devil (and then not even having the common decency to be genuine). Thus id do not have an aburd image. Crappy office politics, yes, but their image is of 'artists and programmers in a creative environment'.

Dre puts HIMSELF forward as the message. As does Cube. And Eminem. They impart information and arguament. If they are all some kind of 'South Central LA Steps', fair enough. At least Steps have the decency not to deny they are all image and no substance. These artists put themselves forward as cultural icons and (pisspoor) role models. I cry fraud.

BTW. If you like his music - power to you - you can enjoy the music of an absurd person, there's nothing wrong with that. I like some Fatboy Slim tracks and they don't come anymore absurd than him. ;)

This is the second time in the last few weeks that a map has been used as a promotion. Back on May 19, MeanArena released a Q3 CTF map to help promote an album from the band "ShapeShifter." One of the tracks from the album was the background music for the level. It wasn't a bad map, but not a real good one either.

I think it's a cute idea, although there's probably not a payoff to match the time it takes to make a proper Q3 map. Can't say I have any urge to go out and buy a ShapeShifter or Eminem album....

I guarantee you 'fans' will call the stuff _they_ dont like shit, regardless of whatever merit it may have. Welcome to human bigotries and biases, marvellous isnt it.

me, I like a wide range of things and can listen to most forms of music (and play some of them :)), what makes a song good or bad is entirely subjective and centric to that person. This doesnt make for right or wrongs about it, as its a personal choice.

kindly let other people make their own decisions before proclaiming something bad because _you_ dont like it

(ps its an awful lot harder to sit down and write music from scratch, than it is to steal samples...)

Irony - Dre sues napster for facilitating piracy, whilst being the subject of legal action over unauthorised use of samples...

Hi,

I would actually look forward to some artists mixing different arts together. While a lot of shite may be produced there also may be some interesting stuff. I haven't downloaded this but if it is part of a promotional act then if i was Id software I would go after the guy and ask for some compensation .... if it is just some kooky stuff done on the side then let it sleep.

As to the legitimacy of the artist .. anyone who is promoted as "street cred guy" and happens to be living with a upper-middle class philosophy deserves to be taunted for being fraudulent :P. Damn with such a negative view that is promoted I would goto the extent of punishing him especially as he hasn't seem to have done anything beneficial for community ?

Concerning the level: I doubt it CAN be on the album, since then lawyers could VERY easily, and quite correctly, declare that the level is being sold, wham, violation of license, thanks for shopping, come again! Remember, pretty much all music is handled by massive corportations whose two main goals are to A) Make money and B) Keep money by avoiding lawsuits.

Concerning music in general: I do NOT call all music I don't like "crap". I don't like country, R&B, blues or most rap, but I'm not saying it's all crap. (Boy-band, totally artificial pop is another matter entirely.) My main problem with rap - and, come to think of it, most pop - is the image stuff. Thanks, but I don't buy the bull**** that rappers are just doing "what they know from the streets". The pop bands even moreso, but rappers as well. Fuck the streets. Why does all of their music have to be about the same thing? I get VERY suspicious of multiple albums of music about the same subjects. If you're making up a persona for a performer, you tend to stick to what works. Real artists tend to do songs on a variety of subjects.

Concerning the subjects at hand: Rap, more often thatn not, is blunt, outright declaration of the coolness of violating the law, treating women like trash, shooting police, etc, etc, etc. And then they go on to make millions. It disgusts me.

Rap is NOT an inherintly unworkable medium; Will Smith (one example, I'm not saying he's the only one) has done some stuff I would consider to be actual music. I don't like people who say "rap is bad", or any such. Rappers may be bad, but the type of music itself isn't really flawed.

My god. Now THAT is a rambling, off-topic rant if I've ever seen one. Good for me.

<QUOTE>The level is very basic. The textures are all-new, sure, but there aren't that many of them and they're quite basic. The bot models are simple and the skins looked amateurish from what I could see of them. The taunts are pathetic. </QUOTE>

I'll agree that the taunts are pathetic - I would even call them offensive, but of course, I don't listen to the music in question, and it does have an "explicit lyrics" label on it, so I knew what I was getting into.

But I thought it was an entertaining level. Will I ever play it again? Hell, no. The damn thing has a BFG in the worst possible place. But it was fun for a quick download.

<QUOTE>On the other hand, the Anaconda level for the original Quake was a great level. It was made by one guy, presumably talent-spotted, whereas Chronic was commissioned from a team that creates other stuff too. Hmm. </QUOTE>

That level was made by Steve "magicman" Thoms, and it does indeed rule. He was hired by rogue, and left with the other guys in the exodus to start Nihilistic.
