QSpy creator ousted from GameSpy!
June 24th 2002, 03:20 CEST by Greg

Read this first.

Since Joe Powell is no longer working for GameSpy, and he does not give any reason, that must mean he was fired. Right? No one ever leaves their job for unspecified reasons. Never.

Why does GameSpy have to be the source of so much gossip? Or is this legitimate and there are nefarious reasons behind Powell's departure?

I believe that Gamespy is moving from the outside-created Gamespy 3D to the entirely inhouse Gamespy Arcade. This is not really surprising, since they have complete control over the latter. Thus endeth the controversy.

Let's spemd the rest of the thread defining art!

Mister Nutty:
Here, have a cookie.

GameSpy:
My theory is that Joe Powell (whose real name, BTW, is Earnest Thistleworth) has opted to leave of his own accord to lead GameSpy Biotechnology -- an autonomous spin-off of GameSpy Industries.  There he will create an army of hairless monkeys, skilled in the ways of Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V.  These monkeys (with their scientifically reduced IQs so as not to be overqualified) will replace the more expensive and harder-to-control site administrators.

Why does GameSpy have to be the source of so much gossip?

Because people won't stop reading things into their every action?

I just can't bring myself to care about anything remotely GS-related. I've never ever used their service and I might have been one of their sites a few times. I don't really have a negative opinion of them, rahter just no opinion in general. They're just off my radar is all there really is to it.

I couldn't give a dead rat's ass if Gamespy is playing Spy vs. Spy.

A few things that ARE important, though:

1) Neverwinter Nights is one incredible game.

2) If you have a PSX 2, Fatal Frame will make the hair rise on the back of your neck. Damn spooky game, much like Silent Hill 2, only more psychological in the delivery of ambience.

3) GTA 3 is a fine game, but the lack of a save anywhere system pisses me off. I don't want to have to drive to some steenking badges - I mean, steenking save spot whenever or whatever.

4) SoF 2 is a hair-pulling pathetic shooter. No doubt about it, the game was made for mp which I'm sure is fun. Halfway through the game the sp is the worst shooter I've ever played; Red Faction, Requiem, and AvP 2 are five times the game SoF 2 is.

Here's some background on Joe from GameSpy3d.com:

Joe E. Powell
Nickname: QSpy
Role: GameSpy Team Leader

What started as an excuse to learn how to program in C++ turned into one of the biggest Shareware success stories in Internet Gaming. As the GameSpy project leader, Joe Powell has been involved since the program's inception.
He's been programming for over 17 years and loves to Quake Deathmatch, at least when his two kids (seven year old Josh and five year old Jeff) aren't competing for his attention. He currently works as a Computer Specialist for NCTS Jax (US Navy - Civil Service), where he writes database applications with Visual FoxPro.

He's into golf, tennis, football, cartoons ("Dexter's Laboratory Rules," he notes), and -- go figure -- computer games!

An old version of GameSpy3d had this to say about registering:

Registration is $20.00 U.S.

Registration will provide you with:

* A free (and early!) upgrade to the next version - for life!

* The ability to share a server list to get a group average ping & pick a server that is good for all the players in a group.

* Membership of the TeamGameSpy mailing list: Receive advance updates and tips on Gamespy and *related* software.

* Priority Email Support: Members of the GameSpy Programming team will answer your questions to help you get the most out of GameSpy and Internet game play.

The current website only promises the following:

Register now, and enjoy a lifetime of great gameplay for only $20.00! GameSpy 3D is a Shareware product -- you can use it as long as you like, but if you register today you'll get access to new features and you'll help support future GameSpy development!
Unlock Enhanced Features:

Try the new SmartSpy and get a server listing in a fraction of the time!
Keep track of your friends with the built-in Buddy List
Smack-talk fellow gamers with the Integrated Chat Client
Receive Free, Automatic Upgrades with each new GameSpy release
Take advantage of Priority Email Support

The one-time flat fee of $20.00 represents one of the best entertainment values around, on or off the net. Once you're registered, our expert support staff will be on hand to help you settle into a lifetime of online gaming.

Mostly the same, though the wording feels less strong now than it did before.  While they don't explicitly promise they'll support the program forever, the implication exists that they plan to do so.  The conspiracy angle (which the topic fails to mention) is that now that Powell is leaving that they might completely abandon GameSpy3D, which I believe Powell still controls, in favor of GameSpy Arcade, which GSI controls completely.  This of course, would leave the thousands of registered users of GS3D who thought they had purchased a license guaranteeing updates out in the cold.

Draw you own conclusions.  Personally, I think there's not enough information to go on yet.  We'll have to see how this plays out.

Well, to be fair, it says that you'll have access to upgrades for life.  It doesn't make any promises on the regularity of said updates.

Anyone who honestly thinks a "lifetime" of guaranteed upgrades can be purchased for a one-time payment of $20 is an idiot.  And Powell (and later GSI) were even bigger idiots to make that claim.

Idiots!

Oh my god. No. NO.

You mean a couple of coders moved on from a project after like five years? NO. FUCKING. WAY!

I mean, all of the original Microsoft coders are still working on Windows, right? And the Photoshop team at Adobe is all the same guys who brought us version 1.0, correct? You're not telling me that maybe, somewhere along the line, on of the guys who worked on DOOM left to try his hand at something else, are you?

... gimme a break.

But keep up the GameSpy topics! If a company our size can keep getting the kind of attention we get, we must be doing something (lots of somethings, probably) right.

Oh, and as far as updates go, at present we are still *actively* working on GameSpy 3D, and to the best of my knowledge, there are no plans to change that fact.

What the hell?

For the record, I DO have a problem with Ryan "TheMystic" Lord, he does NOT know me "personally", and the only time I speak to him is when I have to because he's emailed me about some question having to do with coverage of one of our games for his site.

And TheMystic never worked with me at GameSpy -- he was gone by the time I got there. The only time we spoke was when he approached me about resolving what he saw was a problem at GameSpy. When he began talking about weird conspiracy theories, suing our company, sounding very unbalanced, and flooding me with ICQs, I put him on ignore.
