The Crappies!
June 4th 2002, 12:38 CEST by Hugin

Slashdot, Blues News, Penny-Arcade, Salon, Gamefaqs etc etc.  There are a number of websites well known to any self-respecting jaded web geek, whether you actually like them or not.

But what more obscure places do you find yourself returning to or bookmarking?  Why do you like these places?  What are your favorite web comics, if any?  Technical resource sites? News outlets? Game/hardware reviews? General chat?  Porn? (Oh, you know some folks are going to link to porn no matter what, at least just have the decency to warn people if a link isn't work-safe, okay?)

Talk about your favorite, hopefully not already terribly famous site, and why it has value for you. Maybe it's only a subsection of a larger site. A single columnist, a single forum.  If so, be specific so folks don't have to wander through the junk you already know to avoid.

If I actually bookmarked anything, I might have something interesting to dump in here. Since I don't, however...

TotalFark is the shiznit for links. As far as comics, I'm a big fan of Red Meat. Jack Chick is the best humor I've found.

I'm so mainstream.

My only problem with Sinfest is that it often it feels like "Sinfest: by Billy Wilson." There's a limit to how much pimp humor from Milo-Calvin I can take.  It's fun in small doses though.

Anyway:

Television Without Pity:  Acidic recaps of a wide range of TV shows. Funny, and good for keeping up with TV without actually having to watch it. Links to several other sites by people involved with it, like Fametracker, more media stuff, and Tomato Nation, which is well written essays and rants about whatever the authors are thinking about.

NerdSlut: Funny lifestyle and advice site for folks who are attracted to nerds, or who are themselves nerds.  Mostly oriented towards lesbians, but amusing for anyone.

The Infinite Matrix and Strange Horizons: two Speculative Fiction sites, pretty good quality short stories and articles.

The Nizkor Project/Fallacies:  Site that lays out in a straightforward fashion the classic logical fallacies used to support arguments.  Highly useful when battling idiots on the web.

Yesterdayland: As they say "Your childhood is here." All those old cartoons and live action kids shows and toys and things you barely remember. Kidd Video. BraveStarr. Micronauts.

Aurora: Shameless self-pimping alert: A tabletop RPG created by a friend of mine with the assistance of, among other people, me. But I think the various Flash tools built into the site are cool and useful. Lots of free downloadable content.

Dammit, it's going to take me forever to check out everyone's links...meanwhile, some of my favorites:

Fireland - a kinda fiction-like, sorta real log from an author who I think is not actually published. He's my favorite author at the moment, though. He changes the format practically every day.

whalelane - fiction, art, etc.

Ashely Wood - Ashley Wood, an artist I found on the net.

Penny Arcade - favorite comic, but my second would be Red Meat, which someone already linked to.

Found Magazine - this is a weird magazine; they post things that people have found in various places, like pictures, notes, things like that, with bits about where they were found. It's a strange thing to look at a picture of a man and a woman dated from 1963 and read that it was found in a field somewhere. It's just kind of interesting to me.

Exploding Dog - Sam takes captions sent in and creates simple pics from them.

Ninjai: The Little Ninja - a continuing cartoon series that I'm hooked on.

the alpha conspiracy - my favorite group right now (well, it's one guy, really). chris introduced me to AC's stuff and I go there a lot to check out new tracks, news, etc.

memepool is kinda fun.
