I Wish They All Could Be Californian...
June 3rd 2002, 15:53 CEST by m0nty

The Webby Awards nominees this year, voted on by an organisation calling itself the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), have a distinctly home-town feel about them. Apart from several BBC nominations, a nod to the Vatican's site, and nominees from Denmark, Israel and Ireland, the other 143 of the 150 nominees are based in the US. In particular, the denizens of Silicon Valley have scored way more than their fair share of nominations. And where are these awards being staged, you might ask?

The Sixth Annual Webby Awards will take place on the evening of Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the beautiful California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.

Perhaps the nadir of the Californian bias is the nomination in the sports category for the rather pedestrian San Francisco 49ers site, which features weekly interviews with busty cheerleaders for the NFL team. Like most official sites, the content is heavily sanitised, so that the story about a drunken driving accident involving three players, which other sites would report faithfully (even the 49ers partner CBS Sportsline), gets watered down to a bland statement by the manager. More pertinently, a story on the 49ers site showcased Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's close ties with his home town team. Guess what? Ellison's a Webby judge!

In fact, the list of the 350 Webby judges, all members of the IADAS, makes fascinating reading. Such Net luminaries as Bjork, Beck, David Bowie, Matt Groening, Scott Adams, and Jenni of Jennicam fame grace the list, which is mostly made up of the Californian Neterati, minor celebrities and journalists. The number of non-American judges is in the single figures (I counted eight). Cronyism is rife, with many nominees having judges: two from the Guggenheim Museum, one from Time Out NY, two from Yahoo!, one from NPR, one from Ryze, two from Salon, and a Catholic nun (well, she would nominate vatican.va, wouldn't she?)... and that's just the obvious ones. The press release trumpeting the 49'ers nomination quotes the Wall Street Journal as hailing the Webbies as a celebration of "sites that pave important paths to the Internet's next phase", while a WSJ reporter is also one of the judges.

Should we believe it when the Guardian says "the ceremonies so far have not taken themselves too seriously", or are they really the "online Oscars"... or both? Why do they get so much serious coverage from otherwise credible sources? Is there a more independent alternative, or doesn't the Web easily lend itself to such frippery as awards? How 'bout them 49ers? Why wasn't Planetcrap nominated? Can we ask the terrorists to bomb the California Palace and finally do something constructive for humanity?

This is not as much as a discussion topic but more of a bitch and whine topic.

In any event it proves that having an award for something means...well nothing.

Chinese is the worlds new dominant economy. Wait 100 years. That's the view of the BBCs chief Economics Editor.

His "Vision Of The Future" had the World Economy pegged to the Chinese Dollar.

English makes sense for the Olympics.  It's the single language that will be understood at least in part by the largest number of competitors.  Not Chinese, not French, not Spanish.  If you're trying to communicate with an insanely wide variety of folks, and can't use every lannguage, English is your best bet.

Now, you can complain legitimately about the frequently ugly historical reasons why English is so widespread, imperialism and such, but as a practical matter, English as as close as we've currently got to a universal language.

For the record, I think French is also an official Olympic language. Why is a good question.

And so what if the 49ers web site is up for an award? Aren't Webbys given to good sites, and not just objective sites? The awards arent journalism-related, you know.

You should do, what should be done, by you.

It's kind of ironic, I was contemplating submitting a topic where people just posted thier favorite quirky websites.  Not the typical hugs ones everyone knows about, Salon or Blue's or Slashdot or whatever, but whatever little out of the way gem they'd run across and cherished. (And why they cherished it if it wasn't fairly obvious i.e being really funny)

Presenting the Webby's in California is as crazy as presenting the Oscars in Hollywood.  The 49er's website nominated for a sports-related website award?  Madness!

Well if you people want to risk looking at asian goat porn....

The 49er's website nominated for a sports-related website award?  Madness!

Well no it's just that they fail to give any good reason why this site is so much better then any other sportssite. And that seems pretty fishy to me. Not that it matters in the end though cause after the event they will be just as unimportant as before only they probably will feel less so.

Frankly I wouldn't give a rats ass about this entire webaward buisness if it wasn't for the "We speak for everyone and include everyone." attitude.

Do you really want the masses flooding into PC?  I've already stopped going to any other message boards.

Just like in the olympics where the languages are the host country language and english.  But when the olympics, what is the official language?  English only???

Actually when the olympics where here, everywhere we went the signs and announcements were all in French and English.  French is the official language of the IOC, English is the official language of the group that bribed the IOC the most.

It's kind of ironic, I was contemplating submitting a topic where people just posted thier favorite quirky websites.

The guy was an adult living on his own.  It sounds like she did everything she could do and he was just broken.  Sometimes there really is nothing anyone can do to help.

Now I supported this lady when she just wanted a record of his transactions and conversations in the game for the week before he died.  And although she makes some pretty bad statements about it being the videogame's fault, she does clarify that it was probably an in-game relationship that drove him to suicide.  The media is always going to pick out the most inflammatory quotes for the first half of the article.

"Any other sports site" is really any of the sites that acctauly signed up and paied their entry fee, or just happened to be a favorate of one of the judges in that category. According to the site 1/3 of the nominated signed up, but they don't say how many site signed up in total (for all I could find those 1/3 could have been every site to sign up and the judges simply filled out the rest of the spots).

I have to wonder what kind of crack the people who suggest China will be the dominant economy are smoking.  Yes, they have a ton of people, almost all of which live in abject poverty with absolutely no education and the government isn't doing a whole hell of a lot to improve the situation since they (rightly) think that to educate the masses would bring their own downfall.
