Where have all the scandals gone?
April 14th 2002, 19:10 CEST by Whisp

Those of you that have been around for a while know that PlanetCrap used to have a lot more topics about shenanigans in the gaming industry.  Lately though, the stories here have tended to deal more with gaming in general.

So what happened?  Has the industry grown up and gained some measure of maturity, or are they just better at burying their bodies?  Or maybe the change is with us.  Perhaps we just don't care anymore; we've seen it all so many times before that a sense of moral outrage is just too hard to find.  Patchware has become a fact of life and all the interesting gaming personalities are kept locked out of sight of the average fan.  Even the antics of GSI get a yawn instead of a battlecry, and instead of DNF being an object of scorn, many look to Scott Miller as their prophet.  Have we lost our edge?

Heck, we've got banner ads on 'Crap!  Who'd a' thunk it?  (We love you anyway, Morn)

Perhaps we just need new muckrakers, people who are inside the industry enough to peek behind the curtains, but without such an investment in the status quo that they don't wish to rock the boat.

Why the change?   Is this just one of those cyclical things, or has there been a fundamental shift somewhere, and we can never go back?  Perhaps more importantly, do we want to?

one of the reasons there aren't any "scandals" any more is that people have finally realized that all the activity associated with their moral outrage, biting commentary, witty repartee, and posting of the scads of back-and-forth emails means... exactly nothing, at the end of the day. zero. zippo. nada. zilch.

so EXPOSE THE SCANDALS. it doesn't--and won't--change a goddamned thing. and the prime mover behind exposing scandals is that the exposer wants it to make a difference. somehow. but they never, ever have. and they never, ever do. and they probably never, ever will. latest "scandal" i can think of was that blacksnow/funcom thing a couple weeks back. had all the watermarks of corruption and blah blah blah. EXPOSED!

what changed? nothing. what's the resolution? no one cares enough to find out. who cares?

*yawn*

exactly.

Well, the LtM saga is still going along, if anyone is interested, which I'm sure they're not. Eldin still hasn't given any of the PayPal donations away at last report. He's still bitching about it incessantly over at the Banned of LtM.

Also, there seems to be a lot of angst directed towards player2player these days, for various reasons, mostly to do with personality conflicts. Apparently there have been a lot of postings of furry pr0n on the message boards. This editorial over at The Chosen shows evidence of this, as well as giving reasons why none of the MMOG sites provide interesting scandal any more: they just don't care. It also  provides comedic relief in its assertion that a MMOG site would ever cover anything other than MMOGs - laugh, I nearly cried.

Companies are trying their damnedest to shut people up... and I think it's working.  I mean, I know a LOT of stuff that if I were to say, anonymously send it to fatbabies, would let out some great game company scandals... however, it would probably end with people I know being fucked, which is why I personally keep my mouth shut.

I dunno... what is the fascination with scandals and gossip anyway?  I mean, geebuz, people who like that shit should just fucking nit all day in a rocking chair.

There has been a fundamental shift, it's not in the industry though, but it's basically because m0nty is flooding this site with lots of unrelated articles in an attempt to become the next Andy. Why would anyone want that? At least Andy was focussed on those scandals (causing him to usually turn little unimportant stuff into scandals, but at least that was funny.)

These days I rarely click open a topic at all, and that's saying something since I'm lurking most of the time.

I think the real issue isn't that "we" can't change anything or that no one really cares anymore or anything like that.  While those things are true, they're merely side effects of the real reason.

The "scandals" of gaming company translate directly to "how business works."

For some reason, the "gaming community" feels that developers owe them by nature, and when a company acts in its own best interest, said "community" screams SCANDAL!

If Fox wants to axe a million bazillion fanboy mods, that's their perogative.  If John Romero hires "talent" because a girl actually talked to him, what business is it of ours?  If GSI wants to rape its free labor on a regular basis, more power to them.  If Warren Spector suddenly decides to make Deus Ex 2 a mmorpg with bunnies and Care Bears - he's under no obligation to you.  If George Broussard wants to eat half of the north american continent instead of finish Duke, then he's perfectly welcome to it.

I dunno, it just seems like everytime there's a "scandal" all it boils down to, really, is somebody wanting to make their money at the expense of someone else.  I'd call that "business" more than the "s-word."

Yes, LithTech sucks.  But it gives a lot of developers a chance to get a game out there by licensing it, when they would never have the opportunity without.  Granted, 99.999999% of these misguided fools should never be given a keyboard to begin with, but hey....that's life.

Battlecruiser.  Tribes 2.  Daikatana.  Ultima 9.  Bad games that could have been good are everywhere.  (Ok, take Daikatana off that list.  Sorry.)

So IGN decides to cut their content in half, keep it outdated and moldy, then charge for it.  They can do it - they don't answer to you.  (And, chances are, SOMEBODY is paying them.  It's the Spice Girl phenomenon....nobody listened to them, yet their album sold like mad.  Go figure.)

Ah well, that's enough.  I'm hungry, and a fly just got in and is buzzing around my head.  I don't like flies....they remind me too much of Jeff Goldblum.

I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

Not a scandal, as such, but good reading nonetheless: Rich LaPorte over at Gamegold has an editorial discussing the points raised about gaming payola in a url=http://www.gonegold.com/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=004180&p=]thread[/url], which itself was suggested by an LA Times article.

A mature system that has a great line-up of already available and mostly decent to great games, made by a Japanese company, costing, what, less than $50?, outsells a very expensive newcomer system that has only very few games available, most of which aren't actually worth the money or energy, made by an "outsider", in Japan? Oh my god, I can't believe it!

I'm pretty sure that the latest Pokemon game outsold Return to Castle Wolfenstein, too! It's a scandal! Oh.

sentinel, do you really want Andy back? I'm not Andy. I don't want to be Andy. I read that thread where he left, along with many other old Crap-isms of his, and he struck me as a rather petulant, arrogant, egotistical person at his worst. I would hope that I do not project the same qualities.

I don't try to dominate the subs bin... no one can, that's its point. Anyone can register and submit a topic - even Flamey, even you. Blah obviates all complaints about the topic posting system, because you have the power yourself to do something about it yourself, rather than complain.

OTOH, I'm tired of the same old shit being discussed in the comment threads that's already been thrashed out from start to desultory finish in the IRC channel.

Nevertheless, I rarely complain about this fact. I mean, if I were going to complain about something, I'd start with the Bin allowing voters to see the names of the topic authors before they're posted. Uhm... tired of that yet?

Andy was like the US television show "The View."  The opinions expressed were even dumber than the people making them.  OK, bad example.  Nobody is as dumb as the people on The View.  Except maybe Tabitha Soren.

Andy got an audience because he wasn't afraid of being a loudmouth and he would dredge up facts that appeared to support his opinion.

On closer inspection those facts often involved such a tortured interpretation of out of context quotes that you just had to come back and see the next level of unreality he was exploring.

In a roundabout way, I'm saying the submission bin is working fine, and I'll take Monty's writing over Andy's conspiracy theories every time.
