Coin-Ops for Copycats
April 6th 2002, 21:27 CEST by m0nty

An Australian company is pioneering a new type of jukebox: the one which burns new CDRs for you while you wait. The Copy Cat CD Duplicator is designed to sit in retail stores, taking up less room than a display cabinet, charging shoppers around five Australian dollars (US$2.50) to burn a new CDR in less than ten minutes. The customer's happy, the retailer is happy because he/she gets more traffic and probably more sales while they wait (including blank CDRs, of course)... so who isn't happy? You guessed it.

The disclaimers in the marketing material make it clear that the manufacturers are being very careful about leaving themselves open to litigation by copyright holders.

The CD Duplicator is a DIY machine, where the user must take responsibility for their copying. Each machine carries an appropriate warning regarding potential copyright infringement. The same laws that apply to photocopying, dual tape decks & video recorders apply to CD burners. In order to comply with copyright laws, we do not authorise anyone to make copies of copyright material.

This will not stop the copyright holders from making a song and dance about it, however. A story by the police reporter on the Adelaide Advertiser (incidentally, the newspaper on which a young Rupert Murdoch cut his teeth), has been picked up by slashdot, foretelling all sorts of doom and destruction if this technology ever reaches the US or Europe. Music industry types are frothing at the mouth, despite anecdotal evidence from the slashdot thread which suggests that the machines aren't all that wildly popular in Australia after a long period of release.

Is this further ammunition for organisations like the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), which was discussed earlier on PC? Would the warezers prefer to break the law in the privacy of their own homes with their own cheapskate CDR drives, or by using the omnipresent eDonkey? With hard drives being so cheap and portable MP3 players with independent storage starting to proliferate the teen demographic, are CDRs even that important these days? Should there be a game of Galaga included in the console to play while you wait?

fuck off joker.

On topic... CPCC... that looks suspiciously much like CCCP doesnt it? the commies are back!

this machine basically replaces someone like myself when the neighbourhood kids come to me to have a cd copied for 5 euros (hell, they don't know what cd-r's cost nowadays :P). But other than that I don't see what the news is about it.

I really don't think it'd do much more than create a way to distribute cd's to your friends when you're in the sixth grade and want them all to hear the backstreet boys single without having them all buy a copy. But wait, they already did. Damn :(

Fat lazy people who won't pay for software (and actually just steal it) certainly won't get off their asses to go copy boatloads of pirated material in THE MALL. Not much to discuss here...

Interesting, I did not know that being obese, and lethagic were symptoms of piracy.

I once knew a skinny nervous bastard who copied software.  Strange. Never could get him to THE MALL either.

Is it only me that's been unable to get to PC for the last 3 days? First I was getting DNS errors and couldn't ping/trace, today I could ping but the hostname wouldn't resolve. I finally got on by just using the IP.

Is it me or just my ISP?

It's quite sad - I realised that I had a PlanetCrap dependency. I tried to ease the pain by visiting inferior message boards, but that only served to heighten my sense of loss and hopelessness.
Now I can get my fix again, I feel almost euphoric.

The site was actually accessible using planetcrap.refracted-mandog.de during the DNS borkage, although you would have had to visit #planetcrap IRC to find that out. In future, I suggest that would be the place to go in event of downtime.

Not having the ICQ numbers of anyone on here didn't help either. Anyone care to oblige me? I'm 119063933 (some git managed to get hold of the password to my original 6-digit one, and mirabilis have been less than helpful in giving it back)

Yeah, but the interviewee is interesting enough to make it all good.

Really?  I mean, he's pretty much "I don't like current MMORPGs, they are all level threadmills, I don't know exactly what the games need, but until they have it I'm going to complain."  Same old song and dance, even for people like me who pretty much only read the 'crap.  And to top it off, he makes a silly program that represents the features he hates the most in MMOGs, and calls it "ironic humour".

Any interview with questions about kobold penises is OK with me.

-rain- Ooh. A PQ related question. "Do you have a thing for the kobold penis? I seem to loot them allot"

-grumdrig- Shocking! Yes people seem overly obsessed with the Kobold penis. I'll answer the same way I did in several emails:
-grumdrig- Kobolds have penises. PQ is the first game to face up to that fact. As for their frequency, there are no more Kobold penises than any other loot item -- just people's crazy minds tend to obsess over them.

I find the PQ Hall of Fame to be mildly amusing, particularly when Crappers moan in IRC about how it takes so long to climb up the ladder, but the Hall of Infamy is where the real comedy lies. These losers have nothing better to do with their time than write exploits for a non-game which parodies treadmill MMOGs. Now that is ironic.

You give people a way to have their 'name' appear above someone else's in a public forum, and they use any method they can find to make it happen. That is funny.

Though much like PQ itself, most of these exploiters are probably just doing it for the sake of doing it.

Once, I belive I got it when being careless while deleteing e-mail (accidently hit ok to the run dialog thinking it was the ok delete this crap one).

I thought it'd be easy to get rid of. Kill my network connection, install the trend micro virus scaner that came with the mainboard, and let it do the work. Hell no damn thing seams designed to tell me it knows a virus is there but to do nothing about it. In order to fix the virus I have to download another utility then run the scaner to get rid of any thing that's left. No wonder they spred so damn fast, you can't acctauly get rid of the fuckers unless your online.

Another trend I've seen is the ones where they go fishing:

"Mike,

Thanks for lunch!  I'll call you soon ..."

This is sent with the expectation that you'll email them back saying you aren't Mike ... of course, at that point your email address gets put onto every platinum spam list in existence.  You read random email AND you respond?  You're a spammers wet dream ...

WoT?

I got hit with one of the Code Reds when I had an unpatched IIS running (and I am not always on the 'net). The only thing I really noticed was that 'net games were lagging. But Code Red was a stupid virus, and is easy to get rid of if you know where to look.

I've noticed a scary trend in spam email, and I'm wondering if I'm crazy...I notice that sometimes the name of the sender is very similar to someone in my address book. For instance, I got a spam email from someone whose last name was the same as my boss' at GameSpy, and he doesn't have a common last name. The next day I got a spam email from a sender with the same last name as someone who works at id Software. It's as if someone is looking at my contacts list and sending me email in the hopes I'll think it's from someone familiar and open it...that's really creepy. I try to keep my system very clean, but that can't actually happen...can it?
