Billy Wants His Groove Back
March 20th 2002, 20:04 CET by m0nty

Gaming Groove was launched by Billy "Wicked" Wilson last year after a long and protracted drama between the principals of Voodoo Extreme. Accusations of all sorts of shenanigans abounded amongst numerous masters of the art of Ctrl-C-Ctrl-V news posting. Now, the signs are not good for GG as it is still down after a week of inactivity, and its main coder may have jumped ship.

Turner "Bulldog" Hopkinson - who was one of the prime movers behind GG - has cropped up as "Chief Executive Officer & Network Director" of Gamersclick. The current incarnation of this site seems to be only a week or so old, with the Postal 2 interview making an initial splash, conducted by Turner himself. There is also an OK interview with Kenn Levine about Freedom Force, also done by Turner (although he does get the detail about the NY setting wrong).

Now, far be it for PlanetCrap to start taking the words of Voodoo Extreme forum posters as gospel, but the comments in this thread discuss the likelihood that Bulldog has been kicked out of the doghouse, or that he ran gleefully away. One of the posters questions the advertising gumf on the site, although Bulldog admits in the GC forum that: "Those statistics are from when the site closed four months ago. Technically this isn't new, just a re-opening."

Has Bulldog abandoned Gaming Groove after he tired of honey-roasted midget hos? Is this the latest twist in the Billy "Wicked" Wilson soap opera? Now that VE is looking for news posters again, will Billy patch things up with Robert "Apache" Howarth and return to VE Classic? Or will he OD on painkillers after finally realising he knows nothing about running a Web site? I'm sure once she gets up to speed on this, we will be able to read Chella's site to find out.

Oh, and I like how VE has been getting it's news pretty much from EA of late, even going as far as to post that obviously stupid rumor of Microsoft buying out Rare.  I dunno what the hell Apache is doing over there, but they really aren't paying attention at all.

the real question, i think, is "how does this affect the two dozen people that actually still care?"

I had been worried that this story would be obsolete by the time it was voted in, but nothing seems to have happened in the last couple of days. VE hasn't mentioned it again AFAIK, and GG still isn't up. It's been something like three weeks now since GG went down, although I'm not sure of the actual date.

Could be, but no one gives a shit...

Does it really matter, when most of the gaming sites by and large all have the same content?

Billy Wilson has some serious issues. He wants to be the main man of a gaming news site, and pisses a lot of people off on his way to reaching this goal.

at least that's the idea I got of him after he started GG.

which didn't last long btw.

I thought he was off to a good start with GG ... I went so far as to email him and offer to do an "Ask EpicBoy" column thing where people could ask questions related to level design.  He responded, totally stoked about the idea and I never heard a thing about it.  A few weeks later the content manager (I THINK it was Bulldog) emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in doing something for the site ... I informed him that, in theory, I was already signed up.  This was news to him and he went off to see if Billy knew anything about it.  I still haven't heard back ...  I'm not holding my breath.

When GG started, Wilson posted a lot. As time went by, he seemed to disappear.

I wouldn't be suprised if he's in a drugsclinic. Well either that or in the graveyard.

Anyway who the fuck cares? I can recall that when GG started a lot of people (both on the VE forums and here on PC) were making predictions about what would happen. Namely that Turner would screw Billy over and that Billy himself would vanish into the void again. And it happened. Which isn't suprising if you review both persons history.

In any respect I don't give a flying fryingpan fuck. I visited GG once when somebody pointed out that it's design was basicly a red version of VE. Hell, I cared more when DailyRadar went offline.

Speaking the odd grammer that turns out this way.

You did it, Warren.  You caused the alleged rift between the alleged Billy and Bulldog.  All because you wanted to do your own column.  They could have made beautiful websites together!

Okay so no, they couldn't.  But you should still feel ashamed of yourself Mr Marshall!!

Ok, who voted this topic through? Everyone posting so far has said something along the lines of "Who gives a rats ass?" so I'm kinda curious who actually wanted to discuss this... Because I sure don't care either. As long as I can get me some news and content I don't care if it's Apache or Billy who provides it. Although I prefer my news with less "ho-pop midget skanks" and more, well, news.

With regard to the actual thread, all I can think of is the OMM "Q&A" from last year:

From JamesH:

Which is better, GamingGroove or Voodooextreme?

Chet Responds: Hi James.  The best thing about VoodooExtreme is that it doesn't involve Billy 'Stupid' Wilson, while, clearly, the biggest selling point for GamingGroove is its complete lack of  Robert 'Apache' Howarth-Stupid.  So it's a tie.

We already had a Total Annihilation game made by people other than Chris Taylor, and it sucked.  People who liked TA have a much greater chance of liking Dungeon Siege than TA2 (shouldn't it be TA3?), or at the very least Dungeon Seige has a better chance of not sucking.  What the hell was Kingdom Under Fire?  I'll bet it wasn't any Total Annihilation.

Flaws in the computer's artificial intelligence, the lack of a convenient save feature, and an overall lack of originality all serve to drastically weaken the game.
