PlanetCrap Movie Madness
March 2nd 2002, 01:00 CET by Morn

While watching an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation which some crazy Germans recorded some new dialogue for, a thought crossed my mind: other sites have freaky Photoshop contests, why don't we do the same thing with movies? Read on...

The basic idea is that I upload a short (ca. 3 minute) piece of a movie or TV series which you people record new sound tracks for, preferrably containing some funny new dialogue. Well, whatever you can come up with. Anything goes. Let me know if you like (or hate) the idea.

Also, what about software? Most of us won't have access to something like Adobe Premiere, so we'll have to use something cheaper. Can anyone recommend a Shareware or Freeware tool that can be used to record new sound tracks for videos? (Other than the movie editor that comes with XP.)

Update: I've prepared a small clip that you can use for testing: pcmm1.avi (DivX) and pcmm1.mpg (MPEG-1). Feel free to go wild on those. :)

Oh man, my husband and I are already rubbing our hands together in anticipation of this one.

In a purely innocent way, of course.

I have.....the ability......I just don't know of what apps out there that are widespread or "OPEN SORES" that could help us in this quest for hilarity....I thought maybe virtualdub, but as morn pointed out to me in IRC, it really has no "timeline" function to do the dialog with, although it does do audio track replacement and has a preview.....

hmm...

I've always wanted to do a fansub with interesting new dialogue... shift the whole concept of Neon Genesis Evangelion's dream sequence final episodes into some drug triggered orgy.

Or something less unfunny.

Cool idea, though. Not sure of any cheap/free programs though. VirtuaDub?

The perfect app would essentially mimick Premiere (in a very basic fashion, of course). The XP movie editor comes pretty close to being perfect, but a) it only does Windows Media (probably not the biggest problem) and b) not everybody has XP (which may be a bigger problem). I can also imagine that Apple's image editing app is pretty good.

I think some of Sonic Foundry's apps allow you to edit the sound for videos... I'll check them out, but as far as I know, all their demos don't actually allow you to save your work, which makes them pretty much useless for this purpose. Oh well. We'll find something.

There's a downloadable demo of Premiere available.  I don't know whether it's a timed evaluation or a scaled down edition.

Videowave 5 is easy to use also, but the audio arranging is very simple.  Here's a demo  Alos Ulead has a couple of apps that you can demo, but I don''t know anything about them.

What file format are we considering here?  I personally would like to vote against a couple right up front.  Those being qt, and .rm

Is mpg a suitable format for editing?

Please no .rm, and we will only be able to do .qt if everyone uses Premiere.  straight .mpg would probably be the safest.

I downloaded the MPEG. Is it just me, or is the dialogue already included in that file completely out of sync? Not to mention the ~10 seconds of still frame at the end while the dialogue finishes.  It doesn't fill me with confidence that my own recording would be at all successful, but I'll have a lash.

War is the h-word is definitely the best Futurama episode. It's a shame that it hasn't been shown in Germany yet (with crappy dubbing of course), so I have to stick to my low-res AVI version.

Regarding the .mpg version being out of synch: it plays okay for me (hmm), but when I actually import it into another application to edit it, it does end up kinda broken. I'll try to make a new version that doesn't suck. :-P

Yeah, the mpeg is out of sync for me as well. At least I know its not my subpar system now. Still, its strangely amusing on its own to hear the voices coming out of the wrong character's mouth in that clip.

While I don't require anyone to suffer a lifetime of torment and embarrassing sores, whomever decided it would be a good idea to hire a chinese fight choreographer to do the action scenes in a movie involving fencing in France is the one who should take the real blame.

And could the opening credits have been any cheesier?

While I don't require anyone to suffer a lifetime of torment and embarrassing sores

You're not trying hard enough if you don't wish suffering and pain on all who irritate you.

In any case, that entire movie was a retard parade above reproach. All they needed to do was have the entire cast and crew in safety helmets, and the image would be complete.

I don't really have time to fiddle about with technology I don't understand, so I doubt I'll be mixing a soundtrack to this clip, or any other.

However. *ahem*. I do have some l33t IRC logs that I bet I could cut'n'paste into a clever script for someone else to work with.

Not that I'm saying I would like to do that, or even that I'm inspired to do so. However now that I've read the topic and seen the clip, I'll be keeping a sharp eye out for any textual ass-patting, and maybe I can whip something out text wise. I'd either post it here, or email it to someone who does have the mixing tech, and a flair for voices, but no script.

Hmmm. I guess I dpn't have to exclusively draw from IRC for this purpose; there's an awful lot in the archives on this site... yum.

Anyway I'd rather play W8 and wait for others to accomplish this project. I will keep my ear open for muse farts, however.

A friend of mine in LA who wants to work in The Movies makes his own movies, you know, for practice. He's made homemade Star Trek, Dr Who, and some documentaries.

He also took two films and made his own Mystery Science Theatre 3K tribute. Quite good too. He over-voiced two films: Star Trek V - The Final Frontier, the awful Shanter-written Kirk-Torpedoes-God one. And Highlander 2 - Immortal Boogaloo.

They're so funny - esp the Star Trek one - you start laughing in spazams.
