New Topic?
February 27th 2002, 23:05 CET by Martin

Pretty much every discussion here on PC at one time or another revolves around how the topic at hand has already been discussed to death and how stupid it is to talk about it over and over again. But still the same topics gets submitted over and over again. Or is it just the discussion that no matter what effort from the person submitting the topic still diverges into a discussion about the same old stuff that has been beaten to death over and over again?

If we assume it's the former that's the problem I guess that the Submission Bin will prove this sooner or later. If the crappers want to see the same old topics over and over again then those are the ones that will be voted up. Unless Morn plays too much god and screws up the statistics by approving topics left and right.

If it's the latter then I fail to see why there is so much complaining (besides from the fact that this is PlanetCrap and you're supposed to complain, no matter what). It's a bit harder to rectify this 'problem' as PC is, to be honest, populated by a vocal minority and although new faces shows up from time to time the majority of the posting is done by a relatively small group of people (I'm sure Morn can scrounge up evidence from the PC databases to support this).

On a similar note, what does a good topic make? Do we need to stay 'on topic' with our topics and not stray too far from the realm of geekiness where a lot of us dwell; games, movies, music, hardware, or would some of you actually be interested in discussing the woes and worries of relationships? Or discuss what can be done to save the environment before it's too late?

I know, I could submit topics about love and trees but if I can ask you and get an answer instead of having them rot away in the submission bin I prefer to ask you. If for nothing else to see how fast this thread goes off topic (provided it gets past the submission bin that is...).

First post...? That would be a first for me.

Sometimes it's still worth it to discuss older topics. Time gives you some new perspectives, and the audience around the 'Crap changes a bit and you get new opinions.

I don't think the problem is that the topics have been done before, it's simply too meny too fast. Hopefully it'll settle down a bit once every one gets past the whole 'oooooOO I've gota try the submission" thing, and we can get back to a new topic once every two or three days.

Now on to more pressing matters, would I like topics covering things we get to any way? Well I for one would deffenitly vote for a well writen topic on just about any thing. Course I don't think any one wants it to turn into PlanetCrap politial edition simply because every topic is about some smuck in some government somewhere doing something stupid (want would flamy do then?), but every now and then wouldn't be a problem.

I'm probably going to be shot for saying this, but the general uproar of idiocy that happened back when andy was still around was quite fun to read, and my guess is there's no real motivation for the topics to flow anymore.

You either agree or disagree, and in the process point people to references of things that have been more or less "settled" long ago.

I think the topic itself pegged the "problem" with topics, I'm fairly sure if you tracked it down there's at most, 30 or so people who spend their time replying.

The thing about Andy starting a tempest in a teapot all the time was that it was shtick. It got old very fast, and while he could spin a yarn for about, oh, the length of post #0, it would all unravel shortly.  Perhaps not as quickly as many of the topics we've seen since, but staying on topic in one of Andy's threads would only come about because of his insistence on not meeting people on any common ground.  Over and over.

I almost never posted then because there wasn't any kind of discussion at all.  I'll admit it could be pretty entertaining at times, but it got to be a whole lot like Flamethrower vs. Wheel of Time.   Slightly less monotonous because Andy had/has an insane objection to most of the world, and the target wouldn't only be 3DRealms, but could also be Monolith or even Lowtax.

The site has become something better and new since then, and nothing is stopping the Andy mourners from muckraking a bit and seeing what happens.  It'll probably get voted to the front page at this pace, so go for it.

I really like the new Planetcrap, 6.0, Morn has done a great job.  I also think he deserves real credit for carrying the site forward even when there were times when it must have been the last burden he wanted.  Huzzah for Morn.

I might have voted for this actually.  I don't remember.  There were too many choices, I had to pick one!  I certainly didn't expect to see it so soon.

Morn, are these secret ballots?  Hmm...

What I'd like to see in a topic is kind of what people miss about Andy I think.  I'd like to see the author take a position.  Perhaps stick around to defend it.  Don't be an unbending nob.  But don't just ask what we think, tell us what you think.  That's what sparks debate.

A "good topic" is one that provides a fertile ground for discussion, that in spite of the inevitable off-topic discourses, still draws the conversation back to itself, time after time.

Also such a topic isn't clearly cut and dried; it makes for a pretty stupid thread if four people can show up in the first ten posts, provide relatively complete and accurate answers to the questions that the topic poses, and then get on to the important business of WHERE'S THE ARMOR? or BITCH STOP SNIPING!

I don't think most people who visit this site agree, however. Oh well. I'll agree with several others, things aren't going to settle down for a while, until people learn to get more discriminating with their votes. Morn: two-thirds yes is needed.

One thing I'll definitely disagree with, I don't see a thing wrong with having two or three topics put up per day, if not more. In the past, too many topics sucked, since the website was ass at tracking stuff as it scrolled down, and OC only tracked so many topics back by default; but now that the Archive page is fantabulous and getting more so, there's nothing stopping folks who want to continue discussing a particularly compelling discussion from doing so.

And, I am probably very unique on this score, but I think a good topic is one that doesn't make a damned bit of sense at all, until it goes up and some discussion comes along, and then someone else comes along about 50 comments in and provides additional information that skews the whole conversation into a new and exciting direction.

I'm a freaky neophobe, though, so don't mind me. Also, anyone who says, "we've discussed that sooo many times, nooo, let's not do it again!!" needs to just, you know, not read that thread, and/or have their legs broken. What, you think everyone on the net is some crotchety ass who's been there and done that all the live long day? W-t-f-E.

Well, the main reason for me submitting this (and I'm sure that Morn has a finger in this getting approved 9) is that it is some sort of meta-topic (a topic about topics) and I was, and still am, genuinely interested to see where all this goes. I feel like jafd, in a way I guess, does, that no matter what, the topic is just a seed for the great and irrational random generater we all know as PlanetCrap.

I did try and look for other 'off-topic' topics but I was way too tired to look through all of the archives manually (and my memory sucks). I also tried to find any topics like this but the same restrictions applied there.

I'm in no way against the same stuff being discussed over and over again as long as new stuff in fact gets thrown into the mix. Having flamey calling WoT crap isn't all that amusing though.

Russ: Good idea, never even thought about it. 8)

And I would say that we made it all the way to post #21 before going off topic (by 'off-topic' I mean a post that spawned more than one reply, more or less taking over the thread). 8)

I didn't say it was crap. I said it didn't sell. I suggest a good game that doesn't sell, like WOT or Battlezone, has some interesting concepts for marketers. Not least when one apparent expert in game marketing also worked on one of those financially unbrilliant but critically, and fan, acclaimed games.

I've been thinking about that actually. However, the last time I was running game servers on the same machine as my websites, the results weren't too satisfactory (you'd notice a quick burst of lag whenever someone accessed PlanetCrap, which happens pretty often these days, thanks to the fantasy of seeing the olsen twins nude).

Since I like to do things right or not at all, I'd like to wait until I can afford a second server which I can place a bunch of game servers on.

Which once again brings me to the inevitable point where I'll have to say "first things first". :P
