Mom sues Nintendo for death of 30 year-old son
February 27th 2002, 15:40 CET by Pusher

Yup, isn't it so obvious Nintendo is at fault? I mean, the console made him buy and play the games. It also made him ignore all the warnings printed throughout the manuals. It's apparent that the system is evil and must be stopped.

It's sick to think that there are still people like this persons mother. If that happened to me, I personally would be insulted if someone in my family did that. It's an insult to this persons memory. You buy the product, and accept certain risks. Yet another greedy person tries to cash in on something horrible happening to a member of their family, and pins the blame on the game...

Pathetic!

g'dammit and I voted AGAINST this topic. Not like we haven't discussed this sorta thing before, remember the Tom Green weenie roast and McD coffee spill discussions...

and we also discussed some game related lawsuits.

Personally, I'm curious as to what if any future potential earnings could come from a 30 year old man living at home with mom spending that much time playing could make anyway. What was his job?? Professional slouch?

Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me, you.

So lemme add once again:

that guy refuses to get a life, and although he and his mom ought to know playing videogames for 8 hours a day for years is bad for your health, they say nothing and go on. Then the son dies and the mom fakes to be shocked and tries to gain millions from it... that's pure evil or maybe pure retardedness

and the dumb thing is, in the USA, she might even win this case!

there should be a law against retardedness.

A link to the actual article next time, please...

But I already read this somewhere...  this seems to be another case of people ignoring the warnings and then wanting to be payed for their stupidity.  The kid played 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, I believe.  Hell, I'd probably go into seizures after that...

The only problem I have with writing it off are other cases, such as the Mcdonalds coffee case.  Was their true negligence here by Nintendo?

My pic sucks...stupid stupid me...

Like someone here already said, the mother has the right to sue for anything she wants, but that doesn't mean she'll win the case. I imagine the judge will laugh her out of the courtroom. At least, that's my hope.

Let's get a few things straight:

1) THE MCDONALDS case was eventually settled out of court, and the money damages were NOT disclosed. It's commonly believed, however, the settlment was in the 200 to 400k range. not 10 MILLION.

Read JJZ's link, or look up the documents yourself.

2) This guy might have a case. We don't know what exactly happened, at least I don't, so before you judge get the facts straight.

Now I am off to law class;-)

Paul, I agree that we don't know the facts, but I still have a hard time believing he'll have a case. I'm willing to be proved wrong, though. But I think the facts we don't know would have to be pretty extraordinary for me to believe he'd have a case.
