Hate Games: Onto the Virtual Battlefield
February 26th 2002, 22:26 CET by Post-It

Not to be outdone by some lame Rednecks with their Ethnic Cleansing game, a group of Arabs have produced Underash. Be sure to check out the screenshots on both pages.

Let the War of Virtual Hate ensue.

It was only a matter of time before our medium was co-opted by those who have political agendas. In the past it has been difficult to produce "hate" or "politically/socially" biased games that would appeal to those without much knowledge of computer games. However, the First Person Perspective in a three dimensional environment is one that all people can idenify with immediately. These games have the potential to reach a much wider audience due to the global nature of the web and the technology they are built on.

Are these isolated instances or a growing trend? As it becomes easier for casual users to create or modify games (Counter-Strike, Opera, the upcoming Never Winter Nights is supposed to be extremely modifable and easy to use) will we find more games exspousing this or that political agenda? In 2004 will we have "The Bush Clan vs. The Middle East Forever"?

The media jumped all over the ability to make skins of real people in games a couple years ago.

They're going to have a field day with this sort of stuff. Are they both using the same crappy engine?

I can see them jumping on that engine developer (Wild Tangent, was it?) and swearing them as racism supporters.

While they appear to be religious nutcases, what's the difference between this game and SOF where you ran around Baghdad shooting Iraqis soldiers and cowering civilians? This gets the roligion/politics angle thrown at it while SOF was just criticised for gore.

Ghost Recon - the evil Georgians are at it again! J00 must massacre them!

Delta Force - a collection of non-American supported South American terrorists are up to badness - J00 must eeeeradicate them!

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator - The treacherous Allied dogs are bombing again - J00 must kill their bomber and then machine gun them as they try to parachute to safety!

Operation Flashpoint addon - The evil Americans have invaded our three lovely little islands - J00 must eat the living flesh from their bones to survive! *

* not exactly true, but it would be an interesting take on things.

Delta Force also has missions is the Middle East and Asia and various other countries where the USA has been known to fuck people up.

But Delta Force Land Warrior truely is ONE FUCKING AWESOME GAME. I enjoy it EVERY TIME and I don't get tired of it unlike other FPS's.

Bailey, everyone knows kids don't read books anymore, and if they do, it's all about witchcraft, thanks to that evil Harry Potter! Hmm. So bring books and CD ROMS to the next church bonfire.

As for these games, I think their profile is actually low enough that they will slip under the mass media's radar and if they don't, people will gnash their teeth and fuss and nothing much else will happen. Soldier of Fortune 2 is pretty much guaranteed to get a lot more flack than either of these two titles.

Also I support these Arabs. About time someone started making games where Americans where being kicked around instead of all the Arab kicking and various other groups of people we see in games and movies. I mean, if the USA can do it, why not other countries.

I would want to see how Germany would react if suddenly they started making games in the USA where you invade Germany and killed Germans for fun. Or any other European country.

Doesn't really matter since the USA supports the Israelis. So it will probably start with the Israelis and end in the USA. Much like what we've seen happening the last few months, and will see again sometime 'soon'.

Creole Ned:

Soldier of Fortune 2 is pretty much guaranteed to get a lot more flack than either of these two titles.

yep. and i'm sure that flack has nothing to do with the fact that SoF2 is made by the White Devil Oppressors, while Underash... isn't. probably just a coincidence. wonder if Wired will do an entire page on this one. bet they won't.

and, uh, from their page:

Under Ash is a call to humanity to stop killing and shedding blood.

yet:

Ahmad will hold an arm, and is going to shoot, but he is doing so because he is defending himself; a conduct that is not deemed violence.

mmhmm.

4th try:

Has anyone actually played Underash yet?  Post-It?  I'd fire up the game myself except it would result in my immediate castration at the hands of my Jewish and very pro-Israel girlfriend.

It doesn't seem fair to equate it with ethnic cleansing based on screenshots.  It seems a lot like the usual FPS fantasy of taking out the enemy army single handedly, in this case the Israeli army.  Playing it at least might give a sense of the desperation of their point of view.

I think if State of Emergency could actually have motivate people to take part in the anti-globalization movement, we'd be praising it's power to reach the masses.  Or at least parsing it's methodology.  If Underash can be convincing in it's agit-prop, I think that's a sign of progress.  Punk rock.

Has anyone actually played Underash yet?  It doesn't seem fair to equate it with ethnic cleansing based on screenshots.  I can't possibly play it at the moment as I'm sulking on my girlfriends computer, in the not talking stage of a fight.  My girlfriend is Jewish and very pro-Israel, and even firing up the game could result in castration.

That said, it seems a lot more like a heroic style fantasy of taking out the whole Israeli army single handedly, which American FPS games specialize in, with differing targets.  I'm pretty sure that playing it would at least give an idea of the desperation of their point of view.

If State of Emergency could have actually helped motivate people to join the anti globalization movement, I'm sure we'd be praising it's power to reach the masses, or at least parsing it's methodology.

Other then the reaffirmation of Joker being an idiot, I guess I have mixed feelings here. The redneck game is crap, and sad, but things like that have been around since mod's started.  We may not be aware of it, but I imagine that it's pretty common in the Arab countries as well.

Everyone seems to require an enemy to function in life.  It's not a surprise we aren't exactly loved right now, fairly or unfairly, nor does it shock to think someone out there might want to kill jews. Or us. Whatever.

What it is, though, is just sad. But bloody typical.
