Welcome to PlanetCrap 6.0, powered by blah!
February 24th 2002, 01:58 CET by Morn

First of all, welcome to PlanetCrap 6.0! You'll notice that the site looks and feels very similar to 5.0. While what you can actually see is really more evolutionary than revolutionary, it's a whole different picture behind the scenes, as PlanetCrap is now running on blah, a new PHP/MySQL web app written by yours truly. Yes, this time I'm "releasing the code" -- you'll be able to download blah soon and create your own sites with it.

If you've been a Crapper for a while, you'll notice that this version of the site features member accounts. Don't worry, a) signing up is free, and b) you can still post comments as a "guest". However, your own PlanetCrap account will allow you to use some extra features, like various user settings (signatures, ignore/highlight lists etc), which aren't in yet -- watch for them to appear within the next couple of days.

The biggest new feature -- for registered users -- is the ability to submit your own topics. If you have a cool idea for a topic, simply log in, go to your "topic pipeline", create and edit a topic, click on the "Submit" link, and voila, your topic will show up in the "submission bin", along with all other submitted topics.

In the submission bin, other users can vote for or against publishing your topic. Once enough votes have been collected, your topic will either be moved to the front page, or it will be rejected and put back into your topic pipeline.

Simple enough? Well, probably not. Fools.

If you find any bugs or have any cool ideas for new features, please post them to this thread.

Hey, it's really frickin' fast... my only complaints, the lack of a end of discussion button, and the blank space at the bottom. Other than those minor quibbles, nice job Morn!

Glad you like it!

I added the blank space at the bottom so the comment anchors would work correctly. Without the space, the browser will anchor to the "wrong" position on the page.

I'll be adding the start/end of thread links soon, too.

Looks very sharp. A bit too much "white" space on the left/right when viewed on a 19" screen -- I can only imagine Warren wondering why he has this tiny ribbon of text running down the middle of his behemoth monitor, but I'm sure variable width on the comments will be back soon enough. Nice job, morn.

Love the new logo, too. :)

Creole Ned: yes, it'll be an option in the user profile/prefs, although it may take me a while to implement. I'd have to explain how blah works to explain why, but I'm too tired right now. I'll post some more info on what blah can and can't do tomorrow. Glad you like the new site!

Ghargoil: blah is vewwy shmart. :) (But probably still has a bunch of bugs.)

sweet. whats changed?

They added heroes and two races, Night Elves and Undead. Other than that, it's the same old Warcraft in 3D. The 3D is nice and all, but sheesh... the way it was hyped, I was expecting evolutionary. This is more like a darwinesque dead end.

killer? please. trite, tired, and boring. and what's WC3 like? it's the same goddamned game blizzard's been making for the past 8 years, is what it is. cartoonish in the graphics, which is neat. much smaller playfields. sorceress sounds like (and looks like) a porn star. much fewer units; limit appears to be 90 a side, but that might have been due to a setting i didn't see. diablo-lite "hero" units, which just serve to add more clicks to the micro-managing, and which look to be a bit on the unbalanced side right now. everything's really big on-screen, even at decently high resolutions and panned all the way back... but oddly, you can't really zoom in very far, either. on the up-side, it has the hooks to be a very, very cool single player experience. we'll see. from what i've experienced thus far, though, this won't be the first blizzard game i play for more than an hour.

nutshell: a bunch of happy mediums and very few chances taken.

The fact that nobody recognizes the "orange thing" tells me that Black & White has ultimately failed and nobody (at least of the PC crowd) bothered to check out the add-on. This is market research!

Well, maybe not. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but so far more features are lost than gained. The percentage of oomph in grayscreen, the button of virgin posts... all gone.
