Anarchy Online Best MMORPG of 2001?
February 12th 2002, 22:06 CET by Morn

Believe it or not, but good old Anarchy Online has been awarded Best MMORPG of 2001 by PC Gamer.

Hmm.

Ignoring the crash problems the game had in the first months after its launch, I can honestly say that I've had more fun with AO than I've had with DAoC. Yes, DAoC has been very stable, but it lacks something AO has. Maybe allowing me to be silly? Who knows.

Overall, I think MMORPGs aren't anywhere near where they could, or should be. Everquest, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy Online are all essentially the same game -- one of the reasons why I'm currently not subscribed to any of them. (The other is the little thing about having to play with other people. Oh, the horror.)

Anyway -- should a game that was shipped in a horrible, horrible state be awarded like this, no matter if it's the most fun? Doesn't that send the wrong message to developers and publishers alike? Discuss, people!

Wow. New topic after 17 posts. Hhhmmmm.

Anyway, if you run and anual awards thingie, like the Oscars, and you have a year of totally shit movies, what do you do?

Nominate the most unique, the most controversial movie in hopes the ensuing uproar will cover the fact that the movie sucked. That's what is going on here. Gotta nominate something, anything. Can't have a year pass without an awards thingie, now can we?

Well, there is Dark Age of Camelot, which, as any MMORPG kid will tell you, rox0rs a lot more than any other MMORPG out there.  (Personally, I hate it.)

Speaking of stupid awards, 13 Oscar nominations for Lord of the Rings?  Best Score?  Best Sound?  Best Editing?  Please...

I keep telling myself that it's all a mistake, an innocent typo, it happens.  How could anyone seriously vote for that soundtrack?

It was in Elvish.  Elves are in this year.

What I think is truly stupid is a special category that they've just created for animated films.  Some years there won't be any movies worth nominating at all.  Also, it means that animated movies that were as good and popular as Shrek won't have any shot at the Best Picture award.  It's ridiculous.

I don't think Shrek ever had a shot at best picture anyway.

Anyway, what's with the huge surge of ads and crap for Anarchy Online lately? Is this PC Gamer thing just more evidences of the amount of money Funcom is throwing around to disguise the fact that their mpog utterly sucks?

I don't think we can dismiss AO just because the launch was bungled.  It's an evolving thing, and the game of today isn't what came in the box.  How big is that patch anyway, 700 MB?

There's a lot of commerical deterrences to playing that game, but this award was based on artistic merit, or hashish.

Maybe there needs to be a technical awards event in gaming, just like there is at the Oscars.  We could have Killcreek MC the tech awards, like when they dope up Marisa Tomei and put her on a podium to shove statues at people who get a two minute montage of the backs of their heads.

Yeah, but "Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" did, back when.  I think Beauty and the Beast was actually nominated.  I think it couldn't be now.  They might as well do what the Golden Globes do and make a Best Comedy or Musical category, because comedies don't win Best Picture either.

AO and Funcom are demonstrating a very important principle of the market, however:

"If it's graphically pretty, has breasts, and you spend more on advertising than development, it doesn't matter if the game works or not."

EQ started this, and with AO, the circle is complete. next up: a rendering engine that does 500k poly female models, a slew of pornographic animations, and tons of advertising and "press tours", with no actual gameplay.

it'll be game of the year in a way half-life could only envy.

I've been wondering when massively multiplayer porn would debut. I don't think it'd be a stretch to do; take some of AO's emote animations to the next level and you've pretty much got it. I'm actually surprised that no one's created one yet (my guess would be that it's because you really need a good engine to render it well enough -- since porn is a visual attraction -- and no one who can either create such an engine or afford to license one would touch the subject matter with a 10 foot pole).

I dunno... I'm willing to give AO another shot--granted, the release was shit, but if it's truly been patched to the extent they say it has...
WWII Online is a good example of a game that was total monkeyass at release, but has been vastly improved with patches.

pr0n muds have already been around for a long time. I remember seeing ads for one, on some major online service like compuserve or something, no less, back in like '96.

pr0n mmorpgs would take more development, but one will surface soon enough.

I never got into AO because it was universally decried as horse shit, yet I always wanted to. The whole Fantasy setting really doesn't do it for me, and I always thought AO had lots of potential. So who all still plays? Is it bug-free and does it have enough content & interesting things to do for me to waste my time & money on?

no. i don't reward shitty products with my money. i am, however, keeping an eye on it, because it's a case study in what not to do. i'm honestly curious to see how stupid the market is. so far, the answer would appear to be, "Plenty stupid." but we'll see.

Thinking of Futuristic MMOGs, has anyone ever read Pat Cadigan's Tea From An Empty Cup? It's a pretty good read. It is about a series of murders that occur in a MMOG in the near future & the corresponding online & real world investigation.

In the future the net has become so commercialized that everything one does on the net is monitored and tracked back to them, and there is no privacy. Except for MMOGs because it is where people go to escape their regular lives, anonymity is Guaranteed. Fairly interesting book, her prose is along the lines of Gibson but from a female perspective. Don't know why I just thought of all that, but whatever.

Leslie:

Actually, the thing I would pinpoint as being the worst single element in the movie was the soundtrack. And even if it weren't, surely there are so many other films out that year that had better soundtracks. But oh yeah... they didn't have a multi-billion dollar franchise hanging off them, so why would anybody want to have them promoted in any way?

Honestly, the movie industry is so insular, backslapping, and plain idiotic. Gah... I know it's been said before a million times, but nothing get's me so pissed off as the Oscars. Apart from having my family raped and murdered, and then having the tragedy adapted as an avant-garde dance production. That really gets on my tits.

Then there's HabboHotel, which features hot private room action.

The last time I played AO was two or three months ago. It was fairly stable back then, but still not really any more (or less) exciting than, well, Beta 3 (which was the last time I was able to play it without constant crashes :b).

I like that you can download the client and play the game for free for a week. Of course there are people who're complaining about that, too.

I don't know if I would sign up for AO again. I'd primarily use it as a 3D chat room. With my constant lack of free time, I don't know if I want to shell out up to $13/month for something I'd only be using for 4 hours a month or so. :P  Then again, $13 is a large pizza with a bottle of coke and some ice cream; might as well have one of those less every month. ;)

Anarchy Online still is nowhere near complete.  The servers are significantly more stable, but even with their "Faster loading database voodoo" there's tremendous lag when you approach anywhere near a group of people or if you go into Baboon's bar.  There's major horrible severe problems with the classes and only a few of them are really viable.  They're fixing them at a rate of about 1 class per 3 months and every time they change something it has unintended effects across the board.  Like making monsters 15 times harder than they're supposed to be.

They are putting new content in.  There's a few static dungeons now and they keep adding more.  But the most important thing they've done is add a line of super-expensive lingere and made it so food and drinks show up on your character when equiped.  So the rare moments I log in (got a free account back in beta) I get to live out my lifelong dream of being a beautiful nubian princess running through the streets in panties with two bottles of whiskey.

The only people left playing are level 120+ and feel like they've invested too much time to stop.

It was in Elvish. Elves are in this year.

The scary part about this statement? I was talking to a MMOG exec two nights ago who was asking which elven version of my name I preferred. Wish I could remember the link to the English->Elvish name database... no, wait, I don't. Tra la la.

So where exactly does PC Gamer sit on the credibility meter, anyway? I haven't read the magazine for quite some time.

No one seems to have addressed the main point raised. My concern with Anarchy Online getting this sort of award is that it effectively rewards developers/publishers for using the "ship now, fix later" method of game design. Have we reached a point where the cynical gamer is so jaded he doesn't give a damn anymore and the casual gamer is too blind to object to the practice?

AO had a lot of nothing. I mean A LOT of nothing.

DAOC has a little of nothing, but that gets better all the time.

AO was a great concept, though it was poorly thought out.

DAOC has a pretty standard concept, but they do it well.

A game doesn't have to be original so much as it needs to work, and have something to actually do.
