And you thought Funcom was bad.
December 28th 2001, 23:30 CET by Morn

More MMORPG spamming! Tannhauser Gate, a developer from Poland, is currently working on Mimesis Online, a futuristic MMORPG that looks kinda like Funcom's Anarchy Online and is currently having a semi-open Beta phase that reportedly is just as stable and fun as AO's was.

Last night, I was trying to find opinions about Mimesis Online on the amazing Google Groups, but all I found was a bunch of spam articles from earlier this year.

Here's a link so you can see for yourselves. Apparently, Tannhauser Gate spammed every newsgroup that is remotely games related with a press release-ish thing, pissing off a lot of Usenetters.

What do you think about this, let's say, somewhat unconventional advertising strategy?

Spamming newsgroups with advertisements is as bad as spamming e-mail -- does dolo work for Tannhauser? :p

Although it is said that all advertising is good advertising -- I believe that while Tannhauser is perhaps receiving attention that it would not have otherwise had (good?), they have also attracted enemies that they would not have had prior to the spam (bad). I for one have never heard of them -- I also don't subscribe to many gaming newsgroups ('cept for *.DAOC and *.3000AD). So their spam in a way worked -- I learned about it due to the effect that their spam had -- the question is how many people will refuse to try it out since they were spammed?

well ... if it works. i wouldn't say it's professional, especially advertising like that to the people who probably endorse and preach netiquette more than any other group.

I've had some dealings with Tannhauser over the course of the beta, and keeping in mind the whole Polack aspect, I'm pretty impressed. Not with the game so much as the company. Very enthusiastic, very driven, and impeccable customer service. Of course, the same could be said of Mythic at one point, but to my understanding, this has waned somewhat with the influx of mouth-breathers.

As for the Mimesis... well, I'm not really enthused on that subject, per se.

spamming is idiocy, and any company that does business these days should know that.

with that said, it appears their tactic worked, disgruntled usenetters to the contrary.

the game itself isn't even on my radar, so... don't really care what they do.

One thing that I'm wondering about is: some of the Usenetters mentioned that they had sent abuse complaints to THG's ISP(s). Do those ISPs actually care about abuse reports sent to them?

I used to feed most of the spam mail I get to spamcop.net, and successfully managed to "shoot down" two or three spammers, but what about the rest?

Seems to me that most ISPs don't really care what their customers are doing (and who can blame them; I'm pretty sure the users who're NOT violating AUPs are in the minority.)

Ugh!

This doesn't look like a really bad case of spam to me. I mean places like comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg should be where you tell people about a new game you're making. Also the post is not done in a very annoying way, it's basically some info about an upcoming game. If you're a low-budget developer like these guys probably are, I don't really see the harm in this.

Do those ISPs actually care about abuse reports sent to them?

From the people I know who worked ISPs, the answer is a resounding "Not really". At least not unless there's some evidence of legal repercussions or government agencies involved, and it has to be fairly heavy evidence for most seasoned ISPs. The days of threatening to call your lawyer and illiciting a response are long past.

Without wanting to go too off topic, in my experience (working for an ISP) all attempts I have made to action some kind of investigation into genuine hack attempts on our systems have either been met with silence or mock concern by other ISPs. Having said that, I/we have in the past had people emailing us complaining of portscans and other trivial matters as if we were at DEFCON 1. Ultimately I can't really stop a customer pinging another Internet facing machine as there may be instances where it is necessary - however obvious intrusion attempts are investigated fully.

I didn't actually intend for this post to be as boring as it turned out but I suppose thats what you get for trying to be humorous at 2:41 AM (GMT).

Listen, this has been debated all over.

Every time this subject comes up -- the harsh truth is revealed. If the ISP isn't going to face any legal action (read: liability) then frankly, they don't give a damn. Unfortunately things like spamcop haven't resulted in a reduction of spam. We just know a little more about who does it, that is -- until they move on to their new IP address.

We've lost the overall war, but you can still win the battle locally with filtering apps and LOONIX rules I suppose.

Yes, I do remember the "old days" when you could hand out your email address without a care in the world....

You wanna know what's idiocy? People here that hate spam so much that it gives them ulcers. If you hate spam that much, close all your email addys except one and take proper precautions by using spam-guarding in your email addys. If you put your real email in a forum you are asking for email, and therefore soliciting it.

Do you know that since I sent everyone at PlanetCrap a bcc about the so called closing of this site, someone mysteriously subscribed me to a million spam lists? Oh my feelings are so hurt. Blah.

I am still laughing because PlanetCrap sends me about 80% of my traffic AND I downloaded a free tool called Spam Buster that lets me delete spam off my server. Now I don't have ANY spam. Before I met PlanetCrap I used to get about 15 spam emails a day minimum. Now none of them hit my machine at all.

You can remove spam from the server without it intruding on your machine.
Basically you select the spam you don't want and it removes it from the server.

Possibly related to my enormous metallic cyborg body of the future?

By the way, quick update on Tannhauser... on a whim, I decided to check how their progress has been in beta since the last time I played a few months ago.

Sadly, Anarchy Online has nothing to worry about in the way of competition in sci-fi MMOGery, as it currently stands. Now, keeping in mind it's in beta, but at this stage, DAoC was a fully-functional engine which required only content. At this stage, EQ was almost not in an abusive relationship with it's fanbase yet. Even AO was better. That's the scariest part.

So as you might imagine, it's pretty damn grim.

Acctauly by dolo's logic ever posting an e-mail address is soliciting mail. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out once a person stops putting an address in they don't want mail anymore.
